Lightbulb Fascinating facts about fragrance/the perfume industry?

Would be curious to hear what sort of thing do you find fascinating about the fragrance industry. Is there a particular fact that you found out about perfume/the industry in general that blew your mind?

That synthetic aromachemicals found in modern perfumes are also widely used in household cleaners and laundry detergents. That was a ‘lightbulb’ moment for me as a newbie fragrance aficionado years ago.

That it is much larger than I had originally thought it was in Brazil

Nothing surprising but it's predicated on lies and the withholding of information.

I learned about two years ago that certain perfumes are available in specialized markets and much of what the average consumer considers a 'clean' or 'fresh' fragrance is shaped by marketing and perfume additives to everyday cleaning products. I remember watching the document from BBC on Perfume https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=annRzLYrRwM and realizing how ignorant. I was of the world view on wanting certain smells and scents.

I remember afterwards being jealous of the Asian market for their light, barely there perfumes, and Brazil's specialized market too.

    Whoops, wrong Creed.

What I found most fascinating is the fact so many tiers of perfume exist, yet all pull from the same pool of perfumers and ingredient suppliers (nowadays).

    That's never the right Creed.
And I never realized until a few years ago that the niche scents can reach such a high price point.

I found it fascinating that simple natural ingredients such as oakmoss, jasmine, ylang-ylang etc. are restricted. Even more fascinating was that perfumers do not need to adhere to IFRA (outside of the EU), it is a voluntary organisation.

Yes a lot of people seem to think that IFRA is some kind of set in stone law, but actually its not. good point!
But if you do want to sell your fragrances in the EU and have all the documentations, you still have to be compliant with IFRA
