Floris Leather Oud - I wanted something that could hold up to the horrific cold without being a thick gourmand. This is a crisp, professional, comfortable oud scent with amazing performance. Still humming along 11 hours after application.

Zino Davidoff - because I needed a little protective wall of me-ness around me. Don't know why, makes me feel connected, and safe. Also needed something a bit more potent than Havana for a while. Couldn't smell Havana at all today, have to scrunch up my T-shirt and sniff it to get any smell. Such a lovely smell it is, but sadly not great performance. Wish it would hum and howl a bit louder than it does, rather than end up a skin scent after 2 hours.

But anyway, when that fails, Zino certainly doesn't fail to perform and is much more than a skin scent. A wall of roses and patchouli from which I sat in the cemetery and watched the tangerine sun fall below the horizon.

I do the finances for an organisation, so December and January (preparing and closing of the books for the year) are always work packed. I notice I don't have much headspace for other things like choosing my fragrance, so for the last couple of weeks I just pulled out my 10/10 winter big guns.
Habit rouge (vtg edt and modern edp)
    Heritage (modern edt)
    New York Intense
    Monsieur Carven (vtg)
    L'Homme Sage

Today I went for L'Homme Sage, and like many other days for the past weeks I wonder why I don't just stick with a small selection of 10/10 fragrances.

    Creed Spice and Wood -

I havent worn it for a while and sold it off about 9months ago.
Purchased a 30ml decant recently from a friend, and wow - I sure did miss this one.

Their seemed to be a difference this time round though -
I got strong sillage around the 4hour mark and got a good 8hours of longevity and performance.
This is highly unusual for Spice & Wood which typically is a horrendous performer.

Then I asked my friend what batch/year his bottle was, and said it was from 2014.
This explains the richness of this gem.

sometimes wonder how people with very large collections make their choice for that day.

Do you sometimes just stand there scratching your chin unable to choose, while the clock is ticking down and you're going to miss your train?

I think this is partly why I want to limit to a rotation of around 10 in the end, to make these choices a bit easier.

Also, I'm finding choice of scent depends on mood, and we surely only have so many moods in one day, no ? I don't think i have more than 10 moods.

The idea of quantifying moods is a fascinating concept! Requires serious thought.

Somehow my “supply” has become a collection but I don’t think “collection”; I’m always thinking “quest”—the quest for the holy grail that will make all others obsolete. Of course that hasn’t happened but serial monogamy has resulted, or wearing the same perfume day after day for a long “audition”—until a different perfume beckons.

I think quantifying moods is like quantifying colors. We've quantified a rainbow as having seven colors, but it's really a gradient with a virtually infinite range of colors. We address this by saying each color has a range of hues, but the classification is all rather arbitrary. (Never mind beyond the rainbow: look at how many kinds of "white" there are at the paint store.) So, yeah, you could have "ten moods," but I doubt all the experiences of a given, defined mood are identical.

Now, does every mood or variation thereof require its own fragrance? No, other than, "I'm in the mood to wear ____." Back when I had two or three fragrances, my "fragrance moods" were clearly limited by my options. It was more practical than owning 200+, both in terms of the effort of choosing and the expense. But, I didn't get into this because I had a practical need. I'm entertaining myself, or "enriching my life," or whatever. It's fun. I can see getting tired of having hundreds of scents, but I don't see going back to three. I'm not looking for the ultimate scent, any more than I go to the grocery store shopping for the ultimate food. But I may find that a group of scents are similar enough that I only need the best of that lot.
