    Default New member want advice

Hi! My name's Leilee, I've recently started getting into perfumes and different scents because of my boyfriend and am hoping to start a small collection of my own. I currently own Coco Chanel EDP and Cafe Rose! What would you reccomend is a must-try?

Welcome to Basenotes, Leilee! I hope you enjoy your time here. There is much to learn. You're coming from a good starting point in regards to your current collection. Cafe Rose is a great one. My advice would be that you take your time in deciding what you love and avoid blind buys. Sample, sample, sample! Take advantage of free samples at your local mall, for example. The more you try, the more you'll learn what types of fragrances you enjoy.

As for recommendations, I do not know many female fragrances. A couple that I think are certainly worth trying, however, are MFK Baccarat Rouge 540 and Tom Ford Black Orchid. Both of these are very popular, although I don't care much for BO. I'll let the ladies share their thoughts with you.

    Hi leilee, welcome to basenotes!

Are there particular notes you want to explore? Do you have a budget to stick to? More information would help with recommendations.

As I am new to this hobby, I do not have any specific notes I want to explore, I just wanted to get some good reccomendations and learn about new fragrances. I really do not have much of a budget, thank you

Ok, in that case l'll recommend Stash by Sarah Jessica Parker, an amazingly high quality cheapie that gets a lot of love around here. lt's rich with sandalwood & perfect for autumn.

And l'll throw in Alien by Mugler (jasmine & amber), Stella by Stella McCartney (rose & amber) & the original Ghost fragrance (rosy incense).

    Hi leilee,

Apart from some specific suggests that others have recommended, I think one of the best things you could do is sampling. If you have a local retail like Sephora or department store like Nordstrom, definitely spend some time sniffing various fragrances and different notes. Allow yourself a field trip or a few to carefully figure out which notes may work best for you. You can always request to have samples be prepared for you, for free to do further testing at home. Hope that helps.

    - Serge Lutens Feminite du Bois,

    - Versace Red Jeans,

    - Escale a Portofino, Hypnotic Poison, Addict and/or Escale a Pondicherry by Dior,

    - Songe d'un Bois d'Ete by Guerlain, TF Noir de Noir and/or White Patchouli,

    - Joop Le Bain, Boucheron Jaipur,

    - ADP Gelsomino Nobile, Iris Nobile and/or Rosa Nobile,

    - Yves Rocher Rose Oud EDP,

    - l'Erbolario 3 Rosa, Accordo Arancio, Iris, Osmanthus, Ortensia, Rosa and/or Tra i Cliegi,

    - Vanderbilt,

    - Venezia by Laura Biagiotti,

    - Cerruti 1881 for Women

    - Knize Lady

to a possible (re) testing list, based on the existing fragrance preferences so far mentioned but also the consistent quality/value for money gotten from the majority if not even all these fragrances recommended above

As you try your samples, 1) be aware that fragrances smell different on you than on a paper strip, and 2) take notes. When you have some "scents" of what you like and what you don't, come back and tell us. The more people know about what you like and dislike, the better they can help to guide you.

Oh, and include samples of things you cannot afford. If you love something expensive, there's a good chance someone here will have a low-cost alternative to recommend.

I see these mentioned a lot around here, and they get some pretty good praise. If you have some high end department stores or a large mall close to where you live, you can probably find all or most of these. Trying what is the most popular is a good way to start out. Then, as you determine what you like, you can explore greater variety.

    Welcome Leilee!

The suggestionof sjg3839 is the best you could have. Fragrance are so personality-dependent, that you must try, and be "wowed" yourself so you feel comfortable wearing it.

On my gf, I love Chanel Coco Mademoiselle, refined but casual at the same time. I also love when she wears Histoires de Parfums 1804 or Givenchy Very Irresistible.
I recently smelt Givenchy L'Interdit (the new one), and that was great too, and would love her to wear Tiziana Terenzi Andromeda, or Serge Lutens La Religieuse or Chergui. (the latter 2 were a no-go for her). I would love also Le Labo Santal 33 or Another 13...

That said my gf is 26, nor girly nor mature style, and would suggest you try by yourself, and define what you like: the current fruity-floral-gourmand trend, or something more daring like orientals, green, woody, pure florals, citrus?
If you just start-out, do not listen to blind suggestions, since people will just recommend the frags they like, within counting-in your style and tastes. So again, define the categories you like, or write down some fragrances you tested in store, and come back here asking for "similar" scent in the same category. you will get much more spot-on suggestions.

    Good luck in your quest!
