Default The dilemma of either buying a unique, daring scent or a crowd-pleaser is killing me. Can't decide.

This is awful... I have my sights on two fragrances, and two equally large portions of my brain are saying two different things: "get that wonderful, unique niche frag that you liked so much", and "no, get that one that you know all ladies will love but every other guy smells like."

What would you recommend me to do in this situation? flip a coin?

I agree with the above. If you can afford it, you will be most happy having both.

    I love your screen name.

Also, have you considered getting a unique niche fragrance that is also very approachable and pleasing to the nose? Maison Francis Kurkdjian particularly excells at making people-pleasing niche scents.

If forced to choose, go with the more unique. It'll have more success than what everybody else is wearing.

The niche, because you said you liked it so much.
You never said you liked the crowd-pleaser.

Never see this as a problem before. If budget is an issue, get decants of both. Fragrance smells the same whether you apply from decants or full bottles.

This is not difficult. Get the one that you like more. You're the one who has to smell it everywhere you go.

Always and I mean always buy and wear what you want.

I have never in my life even given a second thought to, "Oh! I will buy this as everyone loves it!" I am from the school of do not drink the Kool-aid be an individual.
Except of course if you love and really want the crowd-pleaser. In that case, buy both and your choice.

I assume your budget doesn't easily accommodate both, or you wouldn't be asking. In that circumstance, I vote with the others who say, "the frag you like so much." Not just because you will please yourself more, but because it's better to please others with the unique, niche person you are than to try to get the ladies to love you with the ways you're like "every other guy." Neither the guys nor the ladies are interchangeable cogs; if they were, why would any of them care what any of the others smelled like, or what anyone thought they smelled like?

The more specifically "you" you are, the more interesting you'll be to the real contenders, and the more effectively you'll weed out those with whom you'd be incompatible. And that ain't just about cologne.

If you get the popular frag that the ladies seem to like so much, you will regret not buying the other one. I guarantee.

While I understand the draw of the one that smells good to most, I also believe you should get the one that smells good to you. If you are going to be a fragrance enthusiast you will probably grow out of the crowd pleaser rather quickly. If you are less of a fragrance enthusiast and are just looking for a signature frag my advice might change.

Daring unique, niche and crowd pleaser aren’t mutually exclusive.

More importantly, don’t worry about the label, its a subtle trap. If you can find a scent you like that others around you also like, all the better.

Yep, this is the way I'd feel for sure. It never crosses my mind whether other people will like something or not when I make a purchase, only that I like/love it.

When you’re wearing a fragrance that makes you happy and that matches and expresses who you are (and your mood for that day), it’ll affect your attitude and bearing and make you more attractive. But it starts from you, the fragrance is just an enhancer or elaboration on what you’re bringing to the equation. So always trust what resonates well for you, and go with that, and you won’t go wrong. Sometimes what expresses “you” best will be niche and different, sometimes it’ll be a more common “crowd-pleaser,” but at that point it doesn’t matter because the real action is that it’s acting as a natural extension of who you are.

(It’s always funny to me to hear people, usually men, go on about this or that fragrance being a huge compliment-getter or magically seducing ladies — it’s almost always straight guys talking this way — as if the fragrance does all the work and as if all women are the same. Nonsense. Be a confident, kind, charming person and you’ll be attractive. Adding a fragrance that helps you feel like you just bolsters this; it doesn’t do the actual work.)
