Default Re: Your top 10 of this decade (2010 - 2019)

Since designer/mass-market and prestige/niche/luxury are so far segregated in the eyes of most serious hobbyists these days, I feel the need to make two lists. First one is:

    Designer

Bleu de Chanel (2010) - Jacques Polge's swan song for masculines, and very versatile if not a bit staid compared to what came later from competitors. Still one of the classiest uses of this decade's most famous/infamous synthetic base notes.

Tom Ford Noir (2012) - Touted as a men's Shalimar by TF himself, this rich and redolent oriental with a civetone note in the base feels daring for the 2010's, when all noticeable signs of animalic usage are considered heathenish by the general populace.

Montblanc Legend (2011) - While the rest of the market made ambrox-based "whatevers" for men, Montblanc stuck to the traditional guns and made another oakmoss-based fougère, granted with pure evernyl and no actual oakmoss or treemoss of any kind to skirt IFRA. This is the lost 90's fresh fougère with the clean white musk "Axe spray" profile we didn't know we needed.

Paco Rabanne Invictus (2013) - A tacky bottle and a now-ubiquitous presence in the open give this a bad name, but the smooth rounded shower gel smell "that lasts all day and not just out of the shower" was rather novel for the guys who want to smell like they have good grooming habits and nothing more.

Calvin Klein Reveal Man (2014) - This one came out of nowhere with futuristic packaging, and a really interesting mastic-meets-vetiver profile with a tropical fruity twist, likely being one of the most challenging but rewarding designers in recent times. Calvin Klein still knows how to shake things up in a world where most of it's iconic fragrances are now considered old-school.

Dior Sauvage (2015) - This one is much-debated on forums years after its arrival on the market, gets surrounded in controversy for its spokesperson and sometimes tone-deaf ads, but also as a smell that's one part deodorant spray, one part sandpaper, and one part surrealist desert. If only it wasn't literally everywhere. This is "the" scent of the decade on men for better or worse.

Azzaro Wanted (2016) - Hoping on the ambroxan trend but doing it on their own terms, Azzaro made a spicy ginger and incense one-two on a base of ambrox that gets really overlooked by connoisseurs because it's not anachronistic like Azzaro's classics, and also overlooked by mainstream folks because it's just a bit out there in both packaging and smell. A lovely dark horse hit.

L'Envol de Cartier (2016) - A nice honeyed woody oriental that uses modern base notes in a rather unexpected way, showing that not everything this decade has to be about clean citrus and synthetic woods or ambergris freshness to utilize the decades trendiest accords. Somewhere between sensual and stately, L'Envol is the modern mature choice.

Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme (2017) - Another example of what is old is new again, this is a stiff petrol leather and patchouli bomb that nobody thought designers would even dare (let alone mass-market android perfumer Alberto Morillas), but the joke's on us because this is genuinely challenging and properly hirsute.

Y Eau de Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent (2018) - The original Y eau de toilette was an unmitigated mainstream disaster for guys who really don't care as long as people say they smell good, but with a few key ingredient switch-outs and tweaking of the knobs, pefumer Domonique Ropion has made a version of this accord that people with taste aren't embarrassed to wear.

Prada Luna Rossa Carbon (2018) - A rather traditional lavender dandy scent on a modern base lifted from the original Luna Rossa from 2012, this is Caron Pour Un Homme (1934) for the modern man or MDCI Invasion Barbare (2007) for the masses; a lovely modern barbershop that won't break the bank and still "fits" within the market at the moment. Bravo.

    Niche

Maison Christian Dior Leather Oud (2010) - One of the most virile combinations of leather and oud, with the latter not even being the real thing, but a high-quality synthetic. This always turns heads wherever it is found, and will never not be the talk of fragheads.

Creed Aventus (2010) - Perhaps the biggest crossover of niche and mainstream in perfume history, this exorbitantly expensive "fresh fruity chypre" exploits a few tricks from lesser-known designer fragrances made in the 90's and 2000's, but upscales the quality of ingredients then places them on a modern "ambergris" base, creating a cult following that has been both the bane and boon of the perfume community, plus copied hundreds of times.

Penhaligion's Sartorial (2010) - A modern reinterpretation of the classic barbershop with metallic aldehydes making a "hot-pressed suit" kind of smell. This is the classier and slightly more expensive alternative to mainstream varieties like available from Chanel or Prada.

Portrait of a Lady by Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle (2010) - As luxurious and rich a rose perfume as could be asked for, but unfortunately with a price tag that excludes many from purchase, this perfume set a benchmark for rose/patchouli combos that finds more favor with men than women it seems despite the name.

XJ 1861 Renaissance by Xerjoff (2011) - One of the best, most natural, and longest-lasting citrus musks on the planet, the price may seem prohibitive at first, but the lushness of the composition combined with the strength of the perfume means you'll have this for several times longer than a comparable designer scent.

Parfums MDCI Chypre Palatin (2012) - Proof the chypre can live on in a post-IFRA world albeit very expensive proof, this marvelous creation stays well within the worn aromatic grooves of the genre and provides outstanding performance to boot.

Maison Francis Kurkdijan masculin Pluriel (2014) - The modern version of the powerhouses we all miss from the days when designers weren't trying to all sell us 50 versions of the same 3 trendy notes, with clearly-identifiable aromatics and a smooth masculine finish over a tart base that makes this an upscale 2010's take on a soapy 80's office fragrance.

Amouage Bracken Man (2016) - Probably the best modern aromatic fougère at any price, and an odd turn for a house known mostly for it's oud and incense-powered orientals for men. This is so round, yet also so vibrant, it has everything you'd want in an aromatic fougère outside maybe copious amounts oakmoss.

House of Sillage No. 3 (2016) - This is one weird daring little cookie; an aquatic with a rich tuberose heart and mineralic musky base resting on ambergris, making it both cool at the onset, but warm once you get closer and it settles on skin. Obviously high-priced, this is still proof that more can be done than we are lead to believe with the genre.

Elysium Pour Homme Cologne by Roja Dove (2017) - The ultimate middle finger to people thinking that the kind of accords used in modern designers can only be achieved with cut-rate ingredients and blending, Roja Dove set out to make the "haute parfum" version of the kind of vibe you'd usually need a bottle of Chanel or Dior to achieve, making the most natural and complex take available on the modern ambroxan freshie. Is it worth $300? I don't know but....

Note: I left out a bunch of artisanal houses and didn't go down the oud rabbithole because each of those seems to deserve a list of their own and I didn't want to spend all evening making lists. Plus, many artisanals exist to duplicate vintage styles impossible with current IFRA regulations, and therefore function as vintage scents, not modern ones. Plus, a lot of artisanal lines are made in single batches then never again, or in sequels like "Version II" so they don't really bear mentioning because they can't realistically be sampled then purchased outside the narrow windows in which they're made available. As for all the various ouds I could have listed, oud is like beer in the sense that you need to acquire a taste for it, so listing a bunch of them seems like it would go over the heads of the average basenoter not in love with that specific kind of experience.

If only it wasn't literally everywhere. This is "the" scent of the decade on men for better or worse.

    Niche

Creed Aventus (2010) - Perhaps the biggest crossover of niche and mainstream in perfume history, this exorbitantly expensive "fresh fruity chypre" exploits a few tricks from lesser-known designer fragrances made in the 90's and 2000's, but upscales the quality of ingredients then places them on a modern "ambergris" base, creating a cult following that has been both the bane and boon of the perfume community, plus copied hundreds of times.
Agree with including these two on their respective lists as you've done. I don't really like either one but it's impossible to deny their influence both in the marketplace and among the fragrance community. So, while I'm pretty firmly in the "for worse" side, both fragrances popularity probably have men wearing fragrances more, which overall is a good thing.
    Most worn:

Black Comme des Garçons, Borneo 1834 Serge Lutens, Patchouli Santa Maria Novella

    Currently wearing: Jeke by Slumberhouse

They absolutely must be included if you're testing to build a "most significant" list.

My list is unabashedly personal, less an attempt to reckon with what has shaped the market than an attempt to identify and celebrate the releases that fit my own idiosyncratic idea of excellence.

I'm curious to see your list Scarce. There's got to be some patchouli good ones in there. Psychedelique perhaps?

Yeah, I like them but I admit that they're more on this list for their influence than their merit in my personal taste. One is like the Toyota Prius and the other is a Tesla. both have helped spread awareness of their related subject but within entirely different social classes.
