Default What perfume lifts your spirits?

I was having a bit of a down day yesterday coupled with an oncoming cold and wanted something that was a mood lifter. Despite all my samples, I couldn't find one that fit the bill and settled for my husband's Green Irish Tweed. Do you have a mood uplifting perfume?

Kitty2Shoes I hope it’s a better day today and that you feel better soon.

For me, an orange blossom note is uplifting. Prada Infusion de Fleur d’Oranger is one of my favorites.

I would say Guerlain Vetiver and Dior Eau Sauvage EDT in summer and Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum (2012) for others seasons.

When grief comes my way--it is not mere sadness that wound its tentacles, disappointment is tethered to it-- I always go for the Iris-note. Some perceive a sadness in it, I find an odd comfort, Xerjoff's Irisss, Guerlain's Iris Ganache or L'Attesa.

I also use Rosa damascena essential oil from Turkey. It is unlike any other rose perfume I have (although this is what one gets from rose-petal-distillation, no rose perfume can match it), it is brassy with an attitude, but rose never lets its face loose its delicate composure.

Caron's Alpona extract is another gem.

And sometimes, hah, this is a bit embarrassing... Chanel No. 5 and No. 19. The combination is my mother's smell since I was a kid.
The perfumes are great themselves but I find them enveloping comfort as well.

Another addition to the list is something by Ropion, And The World is yours. It has orange-blossom just the way I like it and feels like a beam of sunlight.

Nothing lifts my spirits like grapefruit does, lemon and verbena also have that effect to me. Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune, Molinard's Les Amoureux de Peynet and L'Occitane's Verveine are my biggest mood lifters.

When I need an olfactory equivalent of a hug and not a mere mood lifting or refreshing and energy giving effect, I tend to reach for gourmands and orientals.

Wishing you a better mood and hoping you'll get well as soon as possible.

Red face Re: What perfume lifts your spirits?

It's a great idea to turn to fragrance when you're feeling down. I often forget to do that. As they say, of all the senses, smell is directly tied to the emotional centers of our brain. And our brain can have masterful control over our bodies. If you jolt the brain into a better "frame of mind," then certainly there's a good chance you'll even feel better physically, as well as emotionally.

What we find uplifts us is almost always a very personal matter. I think a lot of it has to do with scent memory, what associations (if any) we have with each fragrance.

For me, I find Shiseido Basala to be uplifting. I'd gotten into that EDT very early on in my scent explorations. There is something about that feeling of wonder, despite the uncertainty (what paths to take, which fragrance to get next). Besides that Basala on it's own is just so very comforting with its own unique balance of florals, woods, and spices.

Another I enjoy that makes me feel uplifted is Diptyque L'eau des Hesperides. Very "summery cologne" kind of accord to it. Fresh & minty. A cleansing of the soul.

Anyway, perhaps the Guerlain Vetiver association with your husband brings on a certain comfort. I hope it helped you through your down time!

For mood lifting, vegetal garden-ish scents do it for me. Ninfeo Mio is my 100% happy pill.

For mood calming, shadowy forest-floor scents (Sycomore) and cardamom scents (Voyage d'Hermes) chill me right out.

Hah, Cook.bot, your mention of cardamom brought to mind Caravelle Epicee by Frapin.
    Spice heaven, so well blended.

    Another is Musc Bruno Acampora.

And yes, violet note indeed. Violet candies (ones with true violet notes) are mood lifters.

"Known for the brutality of his campaigns, Genghis Khan is considered by many to have been a genocidal ruler."

I have a mini of Genghis Khan EDT and find it quite nice, perhaps misnamed. In my mind, I'd associate his name with something more like scorched smoky wood.

I find early favorites uplifting., such as Fresh Lemon Sugar and Tihota.
I also find a wishlist fragrance quite mood enhancing. Jalaine Silk. A marine-ish vanilla.
On the other end of the spectrum, I find Shalimar induces a sense of melancholic nostalgia. Which is also okay sometimes!

Hope you are feeling better. Here are my picks when I need a mood boost.

Virgin Island Water. As the great poet Yeezy says, how you gon’ be mad at vacation?
Pomelo Paradis. Sunshine in a bottle and the definition of a pick-me-up scent.
Nice Bergamote. Bright, soft, and calming. Like a meadow in the spring.

For me there's a difference between a comfort scent & an uplifting scent.

Comfort scents soothe & calm the mind; for me that's usually sandalwood or amber. Samsara is a favourite for this purpose.

Uplifting scents energise & revive flagging spirits; citrus or beachy scents do this for me. VIW as mentioned above is a great example.

Any suggestions for the ones that help to sink spirits, such as bring on the olfactory equivalent of a deluge of disappointment at times of excitement and emotional highs, so as to keep one sober and 'grounded'?

Orris-root butter scent (real or the aroma-chemical equivalent, both are equally good, actually AC is kinder)… deep, primal, dark, sobering, a certain quiet melancholy and very grounding. As if the scent politely flicks your shoulder and say, 'get your act together.'
And if I were to be more melodramatic...
Almost like Lucifer (before he corrupted himself beyond recognition) glancing your way.

Strange as it may seem, works equally well when unhappy.
It is almost like a jolt to the olfactory brain... wake up.

    Yesterday haze by Imaginary Authors.
It's a fig-based fragrance, and neither bright nor overly cheerful as far as scents go, but the scent (with the addition of the artwork on the bottle) really bring back some pleasant memories of the early days of my marriage, when my wife and I were young and living in Hawaii. Instant mood lifter.

Why would anyone want a perfume that does that??
