Default Comme des Garcons + Monocle Scent Four: Yoyogi

Now Smell This reports on the new Monocle x Comme des Garcons fragrance (their fourth collaboration):

Comme des Garçons will launch their fourth fragrance in collaboration with Monocle magazine, Scent Four: Yoyogi. Scent One: Hinoki launched in 2008, followed by Scent Two: Laurel in 2009 and Scent Three: Sugi in 2013.

We've partnered up with Comme des Garçons once more to develop our fourth scent: Yoyogi. Created in Paris by perfumer Nathalie Cetto, the fragrance was conceived by Monocle’s Tyler Brûlé and French fashion label’s Adrian Joffe – before being perfected in the laboratory of Switzerland-based Givaudan. The appealing unisex scent takes its woody lead from cypress, freshly mown grass and wormwood, and was designed to evoke the sensation of an early-morning run around its namesake: Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.

Comme des Garçons + Monocle Scent Four: Yoyogi is available for pre-order at Monocle’s web store, and is £80 for 50 ml Eau de Toilette.

Yo! Very interested. I’m a fan of the Monocle collaboration series. Sounds like my kind of green woody scent.
I guess Yoyogi Park is iconic, despite being the site of a minor dengue outbreak a couple of years ago.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

Oooh, very interested in this. I really like the first three Monocle scents, with Laurel possibly being my favorite, but it really depends on my mood. Cut grass and cypress? Sounds very promising.

    Same.

Hinoki and Sugi are both excellent, and Laurel has great reviews as well, though I haven't smelled it.

A local online house has a bunch of the Olfactory Library series that I've been eyeing now on sale as well.
    Most worn:

Black Comme des Garçons, Borneo 1834 Serge Lutens, Patchouli Santa Maria Novella

If you know FM French Lover / Bois d’Orage, you have a very good idea of what Laurel smells like, as they’re very, very similar during their openings and mids. The Malle, however, shifts into an irritating (to me) woody-amber whereas Laurel remains peppery and brisk. I also get notable potency and longevity from Laurel.

Will be looking out for this one - the Monocle series is not usually carried by department stores here, so a trip to the big city may happen before the end of the year.
October rotation : Knize Ten, Gomma, Yatagan, Gucci Guilty Absolute, Tuscany, Elixir, Avignon.
October samples : finishing Hermes Bel Ami, Bel Ami Vetiver, Lalique Encre Noire a l'Extreme. Sampling TF Ombre Leather, ELdO Je Suis un Homme, Eloge du Traitre, Odin 07 Tanoke.

Scent Two: Laurel is fantastic. It's very pepper prominent and sort of reminds me of Bang and/or Poivre Samarcande but with a much more prominent aromatic element to it.

Picked up a bottle at Dover Street Market today. I’m not sure about this one - feel slightly underwhelmed from my first wearing. I get wormwood as the dominant note. It’s definitely green, but also sweet, which is unusual for CdG. I also detect some woods, pepper and faint spice, although I wouldn’t have immediately said cypress if I didn’t know it was in there. I did try a few things out beforehand though, so might just have been smelled out. It didn’t seem to develop much, and like most of the line seemed to have below average performance - average longevity and weak silage. Going to give it another go tomorrow, hopefully will enjoy it more then!

Sugi I grant is a quiet scent, but I get significant projection and totally respectable longevity with Hinoki, while Laurel sometimes even becomes a bit tiresome to me because it lasts so long and is pretty loud.

Very true actually, I was thinking of Sugi because it’s easily my favourite! Hinoki and Laurel have very reasonable performance. Yoyogi seems to be more on the Sugi side performance-wise.

    Thanks for the quick review.

Sweet!? Yes that would have surprised me also.

It’s certainly not sickly sweet, more the herbal sweetness that you get from absinthe. I also detect a very slight “mall scent” freshness in the top which again is odd for a CdG. It’s not unpleasant though and I could see it growing on me. Still on the fence for now...

Edit: From a further wearing today, I take back what I said about the fragrance not developing. I again got the wormwood based opening, which smells a lot like absinthe (green, herbal, slightly sweet), with some slight “generic” freshness and spiciness. However as the scent wore on it became smoother and woodier and lost some of the initial herbal bite and spiciness. The drydown smells like the dreaded woody-amber to me, but to be honest I quite enjoy it - I still get hints of the wormwood-infused opening together with the fairly standard wood+amber accord, which keeps it interesting.

Agreed...love Scent Two: Laurel. It also reminds me of DS & Durga's Coriander as well...

Luckyscent has this for sale now: https://www.luckyscent.com/product/4...cons-x-monocle

    $120 / 50 ml

    The description from their site:

Yoyogi Park is one of the most beloved and celebrated green spaces in Tokyo. Nestled between the ultra-hip youth fashion mecca of Harajuku and the bustling social center of Shibuya, Yoyogi is a serene oasis, miles of soft grass, sparkling ponds, and the shade of gingko trees- a park for everyday Tokyo residents to congregate, relax, and play. Tyler Brûlé, the founder of Monocle Magazine, found himself inspired during his morning jogs there, and so with the help of Comme des Garcons he set out to create a scent that captures the unique feeling of natural serenity that can occur in one of the world's busiest metropolises.

And true to form, Yoyogi is a scent both serene and energetic, a perfect combination of soothing green notes resting on the negative space of the smoky, spicy cityscape beyond. Aromatic cypress lends a distinctly contemplative Japanese character, while the unmistakable crispness of freshly cut grass immediately puts us in Brûlé's jogging shoes on a dewey morning, the sun still low in the sky, the park nearly deserted and silent. As sweet, herbaceous chamomile and bitter, resinous wormwood emerge in the latter stages, we begin to experience the park- and Tokyo- at midday, an escape from the traffic and hustle but still fundamentally at the centre of the city- the kind of modern touch CDG is beloved for. Serene and natural, modern and exciting, all at one- that's the undeniably striking effect of a single spray of Yoyogi.

    Yoyogi Notes
    Cypress, mown grass, chamomile, wormwood

Eek. "Mall scent" freshness and "dreaded woody-amber," no thank you.

What's with the new "running" language in perfume ad copy? Bogue's IHEARTYY also claims to evoke a morning run around the Central Park reservoir.

    Interesting.

I'm not a runner, but I do know that sensation of being out in nature and experiencing the smell of a 'place' and perhaps the marketing/focus group who was in charge of this scent wanted to appeal to that demographic.

I thought that Comme des Garcons release Serpentine achieved this very well. It really did smell like a place - but I don't know if it was FBW for me. A bit too harsh in the industrial smells.
