Fairly new at this, what I like so far:

    Royal Oud
    Terre de Hermes
    Spicebomb

Any suggestions for similar with perhaps more woody, masculine tones.
    Any help much appreciated

Seconding Egoiste, if you like some sweetness.
Or a darker patchouli, like A*men

Check out Palisander or Sequoia from Comme des Garcons. The House do 'woods' really well imo

I was also going to recommend the DSquared range but I think they have all been discontinued -- what happened there

Many thanks, reading reviews on some of those mentioned.
Had not heard of Comme des Garcons until mentioned above - the Wonderoud sounds like an interesting scent, tempted to try and get a sample of this as well as a few other once I have had abetter look at the suggestions kindly given

If you like Royal Oud you will love French Lover by Malle for its bone dry woodiness with galbanum (also in RO).

Love Royal Oud, but can only go to the occasional split which I use sparingly

I can relate to that too. I have owned and sold Royal Oud several times. But French Lover is one that I always come back to. I am on my 3rd full bottle now.

Terre d'Hermes Parfum is woodier and earthier than the EDP. All of those listed are nice fragrances and if you don't already own them, they are worth owning. You might also like Creed's Green Irish Tweed.

Where in the UK would be a good place to obtain samples for some of the above suggestions?

Usual places generally for samples are Notino UK, Fragrance Samples UK, Scent Samples UK, Perfumista. These are probably the more well known places.

You will find Chanel and Dior do not allow samples or decants of their stuff to go on such sites. In which case look at eBay as well as in stores that carry those brands. You might get lucky with a Dior or Chanel stand in a department store giving you a sample.

For stuff like Frederic Malle, they do appear sometimes on eBay or again try visiting a Malle stand.

If you still have no luck, the UK Basenoters can sometimes be a friendly lot
