    Default Bengale Rouge (Papillon)

Today the postman delivered Papillon's new scent, Bengale Rouge, which I preordered from Luckyscent in July. It's been about an hour since first spritz, and it is heaven. I'll write a review after it's gone through its full development, but so far I'm loving it. Liz Moores always works out just the right balance in her creations - this one is a heady blend of rose, honey and tonka, with an intoxicating spiciness that pulls it back from the brink of sweetness. No single note dominates, it's a masterful blend and exquisite to my nose. I would put it in the same league as the original Opium.

Wow, it's a long time since I've heard of you buying a new-to-market scent, Bonnette!

ClaireV's review of this one on her blog certainly got my attention. I'll be looking forward to your full assessment too.

Yes, it's the first current perfume I've bought in years - probably since Ms. Moores' last one, in fact (Dryad). Anything from Papillon is blind-buy-worthy, IMO.

This is a contender for my favorite release of the year. The only fault I can find with it is the inclusion of ambroxen, which remains indefinitely and annoyingly after all other notes have burned off.

Want to get a backup bottle, but it's already sold out everywhere.
Rare, vintage, and niche off-site sales.
    Big list of niche splits.

High praise indeed if it is comparable to the original Opium. I doubt if I’ll get much wear out of it but I’d definitely want to get my nose on this. Dryad was my only bottle purchase from this house this far.

Do you like it? To me, one of the best things about Dryad is that it smells like vintage Vol de Nuit would have smelled when it was first bottled. Vol de Nuit does not age well, as a rule, but Dryad makes up for what vintage VdL has lost - without losing its own character.

By the way, I've now been wearing Bengale Rouge for 11 hours (one spray per wrist), and it's faint but detectable, with wafts of warm aromatic vanilla. It doesn't smell like original Opium, but it's an oriental of the same high quality.

Do I like it? I LOVE it! Dryad has this wonderfully raspy brown-green mossy backbone that keeps on giving. You could well be right about vintage Vol de Nuit. But I sold mine (edt circa 1980s) away a long time ago as it fades away too quickly in this humid weather. Guess It didn’t stick around long enough to show its character.

I love it too! No worries about selling your vintage Vol de Nuit, since you've got Dryad!

Dryad and Bengale Rouge are my favorites from Papillon, I didn't connect with the earlier ones but love these two.

Her comparisons to vintage Shalimar and Jicky caught my attention.

This brand was already on my radar for a few months, but this topic pushed me over the edge to finally score some samples. Bengale Rouge, Dryad and Salome are on the way!

Papillon is one of my favorite houses. Liz Moores' offerings are all so different that it's hard to rank them, but probably Dryad and Bengale Rouge are the top two for me (as they are for several others who have posted here). My least favorite would be Angélique, because I find it too sweet...but then, it's supposed to be a sugary confection, so that's my issue and not Ms. Moores'. I did write a review of Bengale Rouge yesterday, but kept it short because Claire has done such a masterful job describing and evoking this gorgeous EDP.

    Enjoy those samples, Sisyphus!

Won’t be able to try this until mid October, but I expect to love it, as I love everything from this house except Angelique. Such high quality frgarances from someone self-taught, really impressive. My favourites are Anubis and Salome.

Love and own Anubis and Dryad but really really want a bottle of Bengale Rouge. When I have money for it and it’s no longer sold out, I have a $30 off coupon for it(from a limited promo they had for Papillon) at Twisted Lily but I have to use it this year.

Hmm. Now that I've read ClaireV's review, I don't know. I'm not an enormous Shalimar or Emeraude fan. :-(

I don't get Shalimar from it (haven't smelled Emeraude in so long that I can't comment on that one). I'd say Bengale Rouge is of old-school vintage quality, and in that respect it might be considered Shalimar-ish, but it's not a vanilla bomb and its character is all its own. I'm not trying to sell it, though...just enthusiastic and pleased by Papillon's excellence in the face of a lamentable current perfume market.

To me it’s reminiscent to Frederic Malle Musc ravageur less powdery with a dose of rose.
