Default Original Santal or 1899 Hemingway for daily use in fall/winter

    Hello basenoters,

Between Creed Original Santal and Histoires de parfums 1899 Hemingway, which one would you recommend for daily use in cold weather?

I would like an oriental which I can wear casually (jeans + shirt/sweater). I have and like Spicebomb (many people mention it is similar to 1899) but I find SB too potent and in your face, and would like something more subtle and a bit less "synthetic". I have never smelled 1899. As for OS, I do have a sample and I like it.

Which one do you think smells better and fits my preference?

    Thanks!!

You really ought to consider Mont Blanc Individuel. It'll cost about 1/10th the price of the Creed, and is quite similar.

Both very nice, but would choose the HdP of the two.

This one's pretty easy for me - 1899 all the way.

I prefer Original Santal between the two, but I agree on Individuel.

If you're ready to splurge on an everyday fall/winter scent, why not go for something special like Musc Ravageur? It can dressed up or down as you please. Also suggest Pure Malt, Pure Havane and Burberry London.

My suggestion would be to try a few more.

Yes, they are quite similar, in fact OS is a clone of Individuel. But the devil is in details/ Individuel is quite chemical and gives me slight headache, while OS is much deeper, natural, very well blended scent

Hemingway 1899 is better than Spicebomb, but it's also kinda boring so it wouldn't be my top recommendation.

Consider West Third Brand Voyage d'Tabac for something in the same ballpark, but I recommend you just branch out and try a lot of different stuff.

Both are excellent scents IMO, but if I needed one for daily use, it would be 1899 for sure. OS is a nice occasional wear, but it's just not something I could wear very often without getting sick of it.

Better ingredients for sure, but I don't know that it's really any of those things. Fairly depressing stuff at that price point. Reminds me of vintage Joop! also, just a lot more subdued. Someone here wrote that it smells like something a lower-class accountant from the 90s would wear,

Well, this time I am looking for something subtle as I said, and Musc Ravageur could be loud and nearly projection monster (based on fragrantica rates). On the other hand, I value more natural smell, and that's why I normally prefer niche to their designer counterparts (for the case of OS vs Individuel).

I already have and enjoy Pure Malt. Other pieces that I have in my collection and adore in fall/winter are Aventus, GIT, Epic, Incense Oud, LADDM, Vert des Bois and Sahara Noir. As you can tell, none of them are based on cinnamon+vanilla and that's why I wanted something like OS or HdP 1899.

Of course, any more recommendations and opinions are accepted Again, thank you all for your help!!

If a spiced vanilla is what you want, 1899 will certainly deliver that, I'd just be sure to grab a sample before you grab a whole bottle. I find it kinda tedious after a while, but a lot of folks love it.

The idea of a more natural, smoother and "weaker" Spicebomb is very appealing to me. Besides, HdP prices are not as high as other niche brands.

I would take a lot of reviews with a grain of salt. Sometimes, people review things without having worn them for very long. Musc Ravageur is really not that edgy and loud, especially if you limit the number of sprays.

Of the two I like 1899. But for your fall/winter weartime, OS. I actually like 1899 in the warmer weather.

1899 decidedly but OS is not a wretched choice.
Everything mentioned by posters (other than the original one) regarding Musc Ravageur is accurate.

Mont Blanc Individuel smells a lot more like Original Santal than niche fans are ever going to admit. I own both.

The openings are different, but within a few minutes they become identical - and when I say identical, I mean it. I'd say they're 95% the same after the openings fade... and as for the 5% difference... Individuel smells better because it's smoother, but you'll only notice if you smell them each of up close. In the air, they become indistinguishable.

Spray your left arm with one, your right arm with the other. Then do something active that keeps you so busy you can't pay attention to the scents for the first half hour. THEN judge them. They'll be nearly indistinguishable. I think Individuel is a tiny bit smoother, whereas Original Santal feels a tiny bit more granular, but not in a bad way - it's certainly not the scratchy harsh chemical nonsense that's everywhere these days, but it can get a bit tiring.

If they were both priced at $100, I'd say pick the bottle that looks nicer: Original Santal. But since you can get Individuel for $25, it seems silly to pay Creed prices for the same scent. And like I said, I actually prefer Individuel, but only by a little since they're nearly the same.

Oh, and it should be mentioned that Individuel came first. Mont Blanc Individuel was released in 2003. Original Santal is from 2005. I think it's hilarious that Creed says OS was created by Olivier Creed Sixth Generation and Erwin Creed Seventh Generation. They should say it was created by Mont Blanc, 2003 generation. All they did was add to the top notes and tweak the base, and I don't think they improved it.

People always assume the more expensive scent is "better," but in this case, the more expensive scent is a copy that doesn't quite smell as good as the original.

I find wearing 1899 to be tedious too. I remember when I first sampled it. I loved it! I immediately started pricing out a bottle online, looking for bargains, but within an hour or two I was over it. By hour number four, I had no interest in it at all. I still have the sample. I pull it out once every year or so to see if I've changed my mind. The answer is always nope. It's certainly not a bad scent, but honestly, I wouldn't even buy it for ten bucks, because I wouldn't wear it.

The opening is nice enough, I suppose, but it doesn't evolve into anything. It's not bad, but it's kind of irrelevant. Yeah, it'll remind you of Spicebomb, but it smells hollow, as if it's missing a base, or maybe even a heart. I get spices and a very thin white wood.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and detailed impressions

So, i terms of smell, the winner seems to be HdP 1899 (although some of you have also pointed out that its opening is way better than its dry-down). On the other hand, I definitely have to try Musc Ravageur and experience on my own how "safe" and versatile it is. The notes break down it presents is really interesting!!

1899 has got you covered. I have a sample of OS from last year and I cannot smell anything after about 30 minutes. If you get a chance try to sample Montblanc Individuel. Smells almost identical and is a much better bang for your buck.

My impression is different I have a recent sample of OS and I can smell it for a few hours with moderate projection for 1st-2nd hours. I would say above average longevity, specially for a Creed. Maybe it is due to different batches or type of skin, who knows?

My Creed OS is an older version and lasts 8-10hrs easily!
To me way smoother and better smelling than the MB Individuel which I really did not like and has a kind of off note to my nose.

My OS is from 2015. It's louder than Individuel, and that would certainly appeal to the beast mode bros who care more about projection than they care about the smell (which blows my mind, but wow, lots of guys care more about being loud than smelling good)... but of OS is also more granular than Individuel. It's less smooth and more in your face. Even the woods of the base are less smooth. It's more rough, though not as rough as fake wood nonsense like norlimbanol... but still, not as smooth as the base of Individuel. I suppose that loudness and roughness which demands attention may appeal more to those who value loudness above all else, but it grates on my nerves.

I get excellent longevity from both Original Santal and Individuel, but OS is more demanding to wear. It's louder and rougher.

I'm neutral on Individuel. It's fine, but if I didn't already own it, I wouldn't seek it out. I'll always reach for something like Royal Oud, 1725, or Tabac Rouge instead. That being said... I just named three pricey niche scents, whereas Individuel can be found for $25. For $25, it's easy to recommend.

For me, Original Santal is a pass. Even if I was gifted a bottle, I'd never reach for it. I'll always choose something smoother and more gentlemanly like Royal Oud, 1725, or Tabac Rouge instead... and two of the three are significantly cheaper (1725 and Tabac Rouge).

The fact that most people think Individuel is a clone of Original Santal even though Individuel was released two years BEFORE Original Santal shows niche bias. If Creed made Individuel and Mont Blanc made OS, I think more people would notice how much rougher OS is. Granted, OS isn't that much rougher... but the two are very similar, and that leads to nitpicking the differences. OS is louder and rougher. On my skin, both have excellent longevity.

My bottle is first formula and while said it is lasting a long time, the projection is close to the skin and not loud at all. I can really smell the quality of ingredients which come to me as way more natural as eg. MB L or vtg Joop! Homme for that matter which has (partly!) also a similar kind of smell.
No clue how later OS formulations smell like.
My Top '11' of main current rotation in no particular order:

    - Fragrances of Ireland: Patrick
    - Polo Blue Gold Blend edp
    - Antaeus (vtg)
    - Azzaro: Pour Homme (vtg)
    - TF: Ombré Leather
    - Al Haramain: Excellent
    - SA: Shaghaf Oud Abyad
    - SA: Al Basel
    - D&G: Pour Homme (vtg)
    - Mancera: Red Tobacco
    - Mancera: Aoud Vanille
