Default Recommend me an orange citrus frag?

I'm looking for an orange citrus scent, preferably sharp from peel and juicy from fruit. NOT neroli, NOT orange blossom, which I dislike.

I tried a note search in the directory and got 28 returns, most of which were very obscure brands. Of those that caught my attention, all had neroli and/or orange blossom in them except Mandarine Mandarin by Lutens, and I'm not a big fan of the candied fruit and spicy amber found in most Lutens-ade.

I think my ideal might be orange combined with cardamom. Of the two in the directory, one has neroli, but La Commedia by Ferragamo
looks promising so I'll try to hunt a sample of that.

Anybody else got anything to suggest?

    Maybe Orange Star from Tauer?
Or Alpona from Caron, if you can find it?

Intriguing note pyramid, but looks very hard to find. I'm hoping for something more of an everyday splash than a rare Caron would be.

Not in the directory here but I'll look elsewhere. Love those gorgeous MoV bottles.

Default Re: Recommend me an orange citrus frag?

Orange is my favorite kind of citrus, but it's hard to get right, so I'm a stickler about it:

    Here are three options:

HERMÈS Concentre d'Orange Verte - Beautifully bitter orange over dark-tinged greenery. One of my favorite EDC-style fragrances, but with the benefit of an amped-up base. If I could only have one orange fragrance for the rest of my life, this would be it.

HERMÈS Eau des Merveilles - Airy, shimmering, bright orange citrus over salty woods. A bit powdery, too. It's meant to be an abstract take on ambergris, apparently. There's honestly nothing else like it. The Elixir flanker is nice, too, but it has less of the floating orange citrus and more of the powdery woods.

ACQUA DI PARMA Colonia Pura - The black sheep of the Colonia line because it is--*gasp*--an aquatic, but it's my favorite of the Colonias and is no non-standard affair. It opens with a gorgeously rendered mandarin peel note before effortlessly transitioning into a salty-floral drydown. It's refreshing, contemporary, and Mediterranean.

There's also Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine (I have a small travel spray listed in my swap thread if that interests you, or anyone else looking on), but it's more orange juice than peel, which isn't the emphasis I prefer.

HERMÈS Concentre d'Orange Verte - I need to try the concentree. Gave up on the original years ago because it lasted about 5 minutes on me.

ACQUA DI PARMA Colonia Pura - This looks promising. Never tried this ADP, will seek.

I hear you. It's really the sharp/bitter peel that I want, too.

Same opening as the original, different base. The Concentre version will get you around 2-4 hours of longevity, which is considerably better than the original but still isn't amazing.

Some info on components of orange-scent.
Orange peel extract, a bigarade has a sharp, zesty and bitter smell.
Neroil is extracted via steam distillation of the orange blossom. Airy, light, citrusy green scent.
Orange blossom absolute is extracted via solvent distillation, and completely different from neroli, floral and heavy. A lot of folks avoid it because of this heavy depth.
Petitgrain is distilled from orange-tree leaves, a green, green scent.

I like And the World is Yours because Ropion has removed that heaviness and it has fulsome orange blossom notes.
Jardin du Poete Eau D'Italie is more clementine than orange, citrus sharp, feels like you just peeled it fresh.

Armani Privé’s Orangerie Venise was released recently, heard good stuff about it.
    Haven't tried yet.

Just get AdP’s Arancia di Capri. You’ll smell like you’re sitting in an orange tree and peeling a juicy ripe one while a gentle breeze is blowing. Regardless of all the greats out there, you’re denying yourself an excellent experience if you omit this from your list to try. As a matter of fact, I need to double check my supply. May be time to order more.

Update: I went ahead and got another 5oz bottle ordered.

Orange with cardamon? You're looking for Frederic Malle's Bigarade Concentree.

Excellent info, Pallas. I don't think I understood that that was the origin of petitgrain.

Now we're talkin' ! Everything about this looks perfect, despite its very low ratings here on BN. Orange, cardamom, petitgrain, and vetiver -- yes! In fact, one of the negative reviews convinced me it might be the one:
I cannot abide the orange scent/flavour found in Grand Marnier, Jaffa Cakes, and Terry's Chocolate Orange. This cologne evokes the same feelings in me and I had to scrub it off within 20 minutes

I love the orange scent in all 3 of those things!

I second Azemour. It recalls old chypres, and has a green note that I like a lot.

(Alpona was an old citrus chypre too, but given Caron's downward spiral, I doubt it is in a decent state, if still existing)

Thanks, cacio. I trust you about fruits -- even if we did disagree about Citron Noir.

Yes, it would probably be very disheartening.

As long as Diane Haska was at the Caron Boutique, one had hope she would find you older versions but Caron closed their boutique in 2018 in NY.
I have Alpona parfum from 2010 and Poivre (much older).
Alpona Parfum is perhaps the only chypre which maintains its citrus part through more than half its course.
Majority loose the beginning soon enough.

Frederic Malle Bigarade Concentree is like the scent of an orange when you're peeling it and you get a spritz of juice in your face.

Yeah it's probably one of if not the best just orange scent. You have stuff like Orange Sanguine but there's a lot of jasmine and santal wood when you pay attention. Bigarade is just about as much of an orange soliflore as you can get without being an essential oil. There's just a slight amount of spice in the form of cardamon/cumin and a note that is sorta grassy/hay. Probably also one of the longest lasting orange scents of it's kind. I'm personally trying to get rid of a 100ml if anyone is interested.

I would suggest sampling Creed Citrus Bigarrade. This one has the essence of a California orange grove, it's one of the most natural smelling citruses that I've smelled.

No strong woody amber in the drydown of Azemour (unlike Citron noir...). Azemour recalls old greenish-citrus chypres.

I don't know if you like ginger or not Cook Bot, but personally, I really like the Orange-Ginger scented Aromatherapy products from Bath and Body Works. And..they also have Bergamot-Mandarin Orange scented Aromatherapy things too (again, Bath and Body Works.) Which..you may prefer if you dislike the scent of ginger. I am also currently liking "Gingham" by Bath and Body Works, which has the listed notes violet, freesia and clementine orange (or tangerine.) But..I have in in both the lotion and body wash forms, and to my nose, I pretty much just get the clementine orange note! So..I highly recommend trying that one too if you seriously want a nice, uplifting orange scent! (Gingham is very light too though, mind you.) Personally..I've also always loved "Satsuma" from the Body Shop too, but I find that one more candy-sweet and less like a "natural" orange scent. It's very nice and uplifting though! Years ago, I remember I once had the clementine-lavender (or something like that) bubble bath from Fruits and Passion, and that was the most amazing thing ever! (To me anyway.) I don't know if Fruits and Passion exists anymore or not though..I never see it anymore! I think that is yet another thing to add to a long list of discontinued scents that were really great! Their clementine-lavender scent smelled like tangerine or clementine orange times ten though..and actually not that much like lavender, to my nose at least. (Like the Bath and Body Works Gingham scent..only the Fruits and Passion one was stronger.) But it was the most amazing smell, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a nice uplifting orange scent, if you could actually still get it somewhere. As I said, I'm not certain you can. :/

Hermes eau de orange verte & Mandarine Amberee are the best, imo.

Once you start wearing them, your nose will recalibrate & adjust to them. You’ll notice they last hours not minutes.
I live in the Deep South where the heat & humidity are brutal- even in the dead of summer it lasts 2-3 hours on my skin, and a little longer on clothes. (You can also carry a small decant and refresh, which is delightful with such a natural & refreshing edc like these).

The Orange verte concentree smells like an orange version of Eau Sauvage EDT, if that’s your thing.
