Default Francesca Bianchi: The BLACK KNIGHT & LOST in HEAVEN

Recently presented at the PITTI FRAGRANZE:

    25CFC9EE-2AD7-40D8-AAD8-B93461BAE2B6.jpg

LOST IN HEAVEN - 30ml extrait de parfum
notes: Grapefruit, Green Tangerine, Orange Flower Absolute, Jasmin, Ylang Extra, Mimosa, Magnolia, Cumin, Cinnamon, Coriander, Ambergris, Musk, Castoreum, Beeswax, Iris Butter, Ciste Absolute, Opoponax, Heliotrope, Vetyver, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Tonka Bean.
Lost in Heaven depicts a dream sequence of an adult getting lost in paradise. It represents the complexity of feelings conveying both the longing for a place of uncontaminated innocence and unconditional love and the inevitable and controversial burden of life, made up of feelings of sin and guilt - real, or even worse, imaginary.
This dichotomy, which sits at the back of anyone’s soul, is portrayed by a selection of the most angelic notes: beautiful Orange Flower and Jasmine absolutes, together with soft Heliotrope, smooth Sandalwood, sweet Tonka Bean and many other notes that I consider paradisiac.
The darker side is conveyed in a much more subtle way, not immediately detectable, via cumin and other spices, and a large selection of animalic notes, including a reconstruction of Tonkin Musk.
Fragile, sensual, emotional, though not technically a gourmand, it reminds me of a cake, rich in spices and with an orange blossom aroma: not hautepatisserie but the archetypical smell of a cake made by Mommy, with only good things in it.

THE BLACK KNIGHT - 30ml extrait de parfum
Notes: Artemisia, Caraway, Honey, Bulgarian Rose, Narcissus, Iris butter, Beeswax, Cederwood, Vetiver, Patchouli, Oakmoss, Leather, Patchouli
The Black Knight is a gothic, intense, sophisticated perfume inspired by the historical character Giovanni Dalle Bande Nere (John of the Black Bands), an Italian mercenary captain of the Renaissance who belonged to the glorious Medici family.
I was charmed by this character for his stoic commitment to his cause, his loyalty, and his Spartan way of life - despite his noble origins.
The perfume tries to depict the atmosphere of a military camp, starting with the smell of wild shrubs, then the smoke of camp fire and the odor of horse tacks.
The evolution then delves deeper into the soul of this stern character, revealing the presence of a secret mistress, with a powdery rose rounding up the deep core made of vetiver.
I wanted to combine both the uncompromising and the human aspects of this fascinating character in a dark, medieval, meditative scent.
She’s taking pre-orders via her website.
Is anyone else getting excited over these? I know my wallet isn’t...

A perfumer that more people should pay attention to. Rather than muck about rehashing what everyone else is doing, like so many perfumers do these days, she's setting out on her own course and aiming very high indeed. She's not content making good perfumes, just great ones. That is always her aim, first and foremost. Whether she's successful or not is up to the wearer, but she is trying to create great perfumes, and not just pollute the perfume landscape with yet more inconsequential ego-stroking masstige nonsense.

And no, don't expect to "get" her perfumes in a cursory few seonds sniffing the back of your hand. These demand to be really worn.

Got my samples yesterday, direct from Francesca.

The Black Knight (Official release date: 21 October 2019)
    69894CDB-4DA9-4C9C-9DC9-64597E6539FF.jpg
Brace your wallets, folks. The Black Knight means business and won’t take ‘no’ for an answer. This is a fetching masculine very much in the vein of MPG Parfum d’Habit, with its smoky leathery vetiver & patchouli affair. There’s a faintly greasy spicy herbaceous aspect to it that alludes to the oils used to protect metals from rusts, a ‘feature’ I remember encountering in Rising Phoenix Bushido Oud. If The Black Knight seeks to evoke the atmosphere in a medieval military field camp, with the faint campfire smoke, oiled weaponry and equestrian leather gear, than I must say Francesca pretty much nailed it. Concept notwithstanding, I do find this wearable. Signature-worthy? Possibly. Her signature orris-based musky-leathery imprint that I love so much in Under My Skin and The Lover’s Tale weaves a similar magic here.

Everyone knows I’m in the midst of sampling Areej Le Doré 5th collection. But this stopped me dead in my tracks. The Black Knight rode up to my doorstep, did a number on me and demanded my surrender. I missed the pre-orders in lieu of sampling but I will be getting in line for the official release on 21 October. Perhaps I should start an official Francesca Bianchi thread...

How does one get samples? I have yet to like this house but I want to.

You can order a sample set from the company; I spoke with someone there, if not Franscesca herself (great communication in any event), and they are considering a new pair of discovery sets, one leaning masculine and one leaning feminine, and you'd get the 15% off a bottle if purchased within a time-frame after the discovery set. I believe you need to purchase 5 samples at something like 40 euros.

I bought a sample set but didn’t like any of them. Just want samples of the new ones. We shall see. I asked a supposed stockist in USA, but they don’t seem reliable.

The house DNA revolves around a musky-ambery-leathery/suede-orris butter-based accord. If you don’t enjoy this aspect as much as I do chances are high you won’t like most of Francesca Bianchi scents. The 2 new ones should be available soon and I’m itching to get more of the dark leathery The Black Knight. Lost in Heaven is indeed heavenly but it leans a little more towards the feminine side.

Does the orris lean powdery? Definitely one note that can kill a fragrance for me.

Not at all. More suede-like. Think of a muskier sexier post-coital sweaty skin version of Serge Lutens Daim Blond or Bottega Veneta and you’re ~90% there.

    Wow!

Does the "post-coital sweaty skin" indicate cumin? (I don't see any listed in the notes.)

I'm always on the hunt for an animalic gourmand and I'm 2/2 on Francesca Bianchi. I might blind buy and I don't blind buy anything. I'm imagining a cross between a funnel cake and a spice rack. She does darkness and skankiness right.

if you want samples and you are based in USA, Indiescents.com emailed me that they will have samples soon and will email their list when they arrive. I haven't liked anything from this house, so I'll definitely not blind buy.
