Default Anyone here ever wash shoes in the washing machine?

I'm trying to figure out how should I go on about this; my shoes got wet during rainy days and it smells now. Should I throw it away or is there a way for me to salvage it?

I've tried the fogger spray to remove odor but it doesn't work in this situation.

Gym shoes? gym shoes can usually be washed in a washing machine. Avoid high temperatures which can melt plastic parts. Some people put the shoes in laundry bags to give a little protection. I would also not put anything else in the load, the shoes, when moving around, will damage the clothes.

    I'll second what cacio said.
I do wash my various sneakers in the washing machine and nothing bad happened so far. I do wash in lower temperatures (30-40 C), lower settings and don't put clothes together, too.

I have only washed slippers and tennis shoes successfully in the machine. Would personally never consider putting shoes in the machine.

I never have but my kids do it all the time. They wash their sneakers every couple weeks. They like to wear white Nike sneakers and it seems to work pretty well.

Sneakers in the laundry machine?! Hadn't considered that. And it works? I'd imagine that'd be quite a thudding sound in the spin cycle. And the clatter from drying the in the dryer has got to be...a lot.

Maybe some 409 and a paper towel is the move for me. I busted out a few pairs of sneakers to put into my fall rotation but they need some attention.

I would certainly never toss good shoes in the washing machine, not even sneakers. I have cleaning supplies for leather, suede, and canvas shoes. Also, waterproofing solutions designed for footwear, which I would suggest you use if you tend to get caught in the rain without galoshes.

If the shoes have removable non-leather insoles, you could wash or replace those. (For that matter, you could replace leather ones.) Since they started to smell after getting soaked and the stock anti-odor stuff didn't work, you might also try Lysol—again, assuming they're not good leather shoes.

That works as well. It's good for touch-ups.

Yes! Those and even the Clorox disposable wipes work great, too.

I've done it before with well-loved trainers. As mentioned higher up, laundry bags and cold temperatures are your help. Also, try to do it in the summer months and not in direct sunlight - let them dry naturally. Stuff them with paper towels and change every now and then for the shoes to keep their shape.

What are the shoes worth to you, is the question. If they are worth the cost, I'd buy some silica gel beads. Seal the shoes in a large zip-lock bag with the silica gel beads and wait for the beads to absorb moisture from the shoes.

For gym shoes or cheap canvas shoes like Vans, maybe you can wash them in the washing machine. I still wouldn't recommend it though. If you have nice shoes, they will be ruined. Just have them cleaned professionally.

If they're cloth or canvas, they'll be fine. Won't hurt them any.

What, you never ran your high heels through the washing machine?
