Thumbs up 5 underrated cheapies for fall, that you should try/buy

Fragrance is subjective, let's get that out of the way. Though I feel these 5 fragrances have been long slept on and deserve some credibility. Even if only 1 guy tries one of these, that's one more guy wearing something great. The more I look at people's SOTD's, the more I notice that these are never worn by anyone.

I removed anything I had on this list that has been discontinued, or is generally harder to find. If it is discontinued, the prices are still under the maximum for the topic. Every fragrance on this list is the true definition of cheapy, in being under $30. With that said here's the list (in no particular order)

    1. Rocawear Evolution: Just because you wear a Rocawear frag, doesn't mean you have to dress the part, or act a certain way. I wear a Sean John newsboy hat simply because I like the look. I wear a Rocawear fragrance because I like the smell. At $15 for 3.4 oz, this one is a steal. A boozy, rum, with a feeling of being around the fireplace, is the best way I can describe this one. It isn't really like anything I own, but it has this fuzzy, almost cotton like feel that I have gotten from other frags, like Double Black, Corduroy, and a few other lesser known ones. Evolution has a lot of sweet and spicy nuances centered around a boozy gourmand type of accord. I get about 4 hours longevity with low to moderate projection. It's more on the subtle side.

    2. Paris Hilton Just Me: Maybe I should just call this underrated celebrity frags? Just me, is a fragrance I have been raving about for many years. I have owned it since its release, which at the time, there was nothing on the market like it. I truly believe this was the inspiration to the very successful AdG Profumo, but I'll leave that to others to decide for themselves. Just Me is a darker AdG, Suitable for cooler climate, when you still want an aquatic to wear. Cool Summer nights also work well for this one, and so does high heat. It's just a great versatile fragrance. $20 for 3.4 oz is a steal. Unless you've already been spoiled by AdG Profumo, you might find this boring. Though I have owned this one first, and I can honestly say it's better. There's a tomato leaf note that is the main thing that separates it the AdG line, and to me, it's more interesting. Most people probably wouldn't even notice the tomato leaf, and just think that this is a great smelling fragrance. Performance is very good.

    3. Zirh Corduroy: Here's one that you won't be able to find at Ross, Tj Maxx or Marshall's like the above recommendations. Though I am confident that if you like sweet and spicy, cozy, orientals teetering into gourmand territory, you will love this. One of my all time favorites, and a hidden gem, and own 3 bottles of this, and am buying another right now as I type this. i wasn't going to add this to my list, as I assumed it would have shot up in price by now. I still see 2.5 oz bottles going on Ebay for $20-$30, and that's still a good deal. Granted, when this was in its prime, you could get a 4.2 bottle for that price, maybe even less. This stuff is amazing! I don't often associate that word with emphasis with fragrances anymore, especially not all the modern crap that gets released. I don't know anybody in my personal life who doesn't love this fragrance, nor anybody who I have spoken to on BN, and Youtube, who didn't at least like it. At one point this fragrance at a perfect 100% score on BN in the reviews. I am not saying that my reviews of this is anymore authentic than the negatives, but I did notice that the people who negatively review this, just simply don't like this style of fragrance. It would be the equivalent of a frat boy reviewing Grey Flannel. I would suggest reading the positive reviews of this, the people who have discovered this gem in its rather short lifespan. This one will eventually be gone completely, and I would love to see others have the opportunity to smell this fantastic gem, before it's gone forever. I know there's gonna be backlash, I know one person in particular who will say "why are you trying to cram your favorites down people's throats" blah blah.. No, not at all. I am trying to share my favorites with others.

    4. Jacomo de Jacomo Rouge: If you don't like sweet fragrances that border on cloying, then move along now. this one is just that. In the same category with Animale Animale, and Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin; this one is a simple, sweet, gourmand. To put it simply, it smells like macaroons. If you have ever been to a real Jewish bakery, like Tina's in NYC, you will never get the smell of freshly baked macaroons out of your head. JdJR is the closest to that smell that I have found, including niche fragrances. It takes me back to my childhood, and the few times I got to spend with my grandparents in NY. This fragrance is tastefully done, although very sweet, not overbearing, but I wouldn't recommend wearing it in any heat, or humidity (I've already made that mistake). A few fragrances this reminds me of are Le Male, Lolital Lempicka Au Masculine, and Rochas Man to a lesser degree. It is different enough to warrant a purchase imho, and shouldn't be redundant, if you own all of those. I should also note, this fragrance is created by Bernard Ellena, Jean Claude Ellena's brother.

    5. Halloween Man Shot: Although I really wanted to recommend Halloween Man X, due to its price being over $30, and limited availability, I thought this one would work. Halloween seems to make pretty solid sweeter frags, good prices and quality. You can check out the entire line if you want. Shot is very similar, and I mean like 95% similar to Montblanc Legend Night. Legend Night is more low key and discreet. I would say more for and intimate endeavor with somebody in close proximity to you. Shot performs better. Both are on the style of D&G The One. Seductive, sweet, vanilla, iris, a little boozy, creamy. Maybe not so much for Fall itself as it is just a good date night fragrance. Last I saw, 4 oz bottles go for $23!

Those are 5 frags worth your time imo. Of course, always do more research to get a better idea for making a blind buy, unless you just don't care. Most of these are unique and different, and won't break the bank.

I never have done seasons, so I can’t really differentiate there. That said, these three were acquired for $20 or less and are still available, at least on eBay for around the $20 or less benchmark:

Bogart pour Homme - I confess I rarely wear this one anymore, but if one loves the smell of cherry pipe tobacco, it should do nicely, and it has plenty of potency (legendary, actually). Good stuff, if just a touch too synthetic smelling.

Bronze Age - A Terre d’Hermes “me too” type perfume, that while not a replacement to my nose, is a good general approximation that smells fine in its own right, while costing a lot less.

Bellagio Uomo - A fantastic highly underrated Italian style dry fruity/herbal aromatic that is somewhat in the vein of L’Eau d’Issey, but smells *much* better and is not annoying at all (unlike the scary bad (IMO) other one) for a lot less money. I think they used to sell a set of this with full sized 100ml bottles of both the EDT and aftershave balm for under $20. It was a steal! The aftershave balm that came in a plastic tube was pretty much a throwaway, but the EDT is excellent and one you can spray away with abandon as the composition is so light and airy.
    Current Top Ten:
    1) Portrait of a Lady original formula (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    2) Giorgio V.I.P. for Men (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    4) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    5)
Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)
    6) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    7) Javanese Patchouli (Zegna) - tie
    7) Monsieur de Givenchy vintage (Givenchy) - tie
    7) Coeur de Vetiver Sacré (L'Artisan) - tie
    7) Polo vintage (Ralph Lauren) - tie

Cerruti Pour Homme - kind of a cheaper version of Armani Code with a twist. Compliment getter for sure! Whole year rounder and not strictly a fall/winter only frag.

Tabac Men Fire Power - a rather good clone of Gucci Envy for Men. Warm, spicy and mature.

Burberry London and Burberry Brit Rhythm Intense - There's no need to say a lot about London, it's a legend. A bit underrated due to longevity issues I personally never had. Brit Rhythm Intense is a very nice and more modern take on, lets say Rochas Man without the coffee note, Diesel Fuel For Life but tad bit more masculine maybe. A job well done albeit nothing spectacular

Azzaro Silver Black/Onyx - Oh my, old school dark but fresh and sort of fruity. This one screams autumn and it's very mature too. Always gets me noticed!

Lalique Encre Noire - Ok, not really underrated! For that price you get a high quality fragrance. Mysterious, dark and gray fragrance, not really for everyone and a taste to acquire!

    - Lapidus Black Soul Imperial: a very well constructed spicy-ambery leather with a coffee accord mixed in. Unique imo and pretty mature smelling. Very well performance as well!

    - Vermeil pour homme: A more modernized version so to speak of the legendary Davidoff by Davidoff (1984) without the castoreum: a flowery green floral on a steady woody-patchouli base that smells extremely masculine. Love it to bits and own 3x 100ml bottles of this stuff.

    - Versace L'Homme: a lemony, flowery leather from the older days. Reformulated but still ok imo!

    - Burberry Brit Rhythm Intense for man: A nice smelling leather tonka fragrance. Smells to me like a mature more leathery version of Armani Code which also has that tonka-leather combo.

    - Tabac edc: No need to explain I guess: an always good and fresh smelling barbershop like fragrance which is in my experience always appreciated with others around you. Don't mix this one up with the inferior and different smelling edt version!
My Top '11' of main current rotation in no particular order:

    - Fragrances of Ireland: Patrick
    - Polo Blue Gold Blend edp
    - Antaeus (vtg)
    - Azzaro: Pour Homme (vtg)
    - TF: Ombré Leather
    - Al Haramain: Excellent
    - SA: Shaghaf Oud Abyad
    - SA: Al Basel
    - D&G: Pour Homme (vtg)
    - Mancera: Red Tobacco
    - Mancera: Aoud Vanille

Just see now you also recommended the Burberry Rhythm Intense but I do not get the comparison to Rochas man? In Rochas Man there is no leather at all which is the most prominent note in Rhythm Intense nor is there any tonka bean or pepper in the Rochas which are also very prominent in the Burberry. To each his own of course but to me it has a lot of similarities to Armani Code with way more leather regarding notes as well as smell wise.

The refference to me is the raspberry note! I concur that Rochas Man from the top turns to something completely different to bottom!

I agree, Bogart pH is a good one, and I too rarely wear it, but it's nice to know I have it, and a bargain at $15-$20.

I had Bellagio back in the day, and really used to love it. It's indeed similar to L'eau D'issey, but more stripped down sort of. I loved the bottle on this one too.

Hello Slayerized, haven't seen you for a while, my friend. I hope you are doing well.

I used to own one of the Lapidus Soul's, but it might have been the Gold version. I really didn't care for it, and found it to smell like a cheap 1 Million.

Vermeil has been on and off of my test/wish lists for a while. Sometimes I add a fragrance to my wishlist without even testing it, especially if it's cheap enough, because I am confident I will like it, and this is one of those.

Versace L'Homme, another great one, and very cheap. I would say more for a man 30+.

I used to own Brit Rhythm, not the Intense version, and I found it smell similar to La Nuit, but less interesting. I wound up selling it for very cheap. I wonder if Intense is just an intense version of that? Or if it actually smells different.

Tabac is probably one of the few highly praised "gentlemanly frags" that I have never tried. I hear nothing but good things about it though.

Thank you for the excellent list. Very good inexpensive recommendations for people to go off of.

I still post almost every day, especially on week days.
I don't know if you refer to the Black Soul Imperial as bottle is all black just with a golden colored rim and cap but imo there is hardly any relation to 1 Million, especially not with its nice coffee accord.
The Burberry Intense is different compared to the non-intense and is really worth checking out imo!

    Cheers

Tabac EdC - yes! EdT - uh, no. Worth repeating, and I fully concur (FWIW)

And in the wet shaving community (of which I'm a part of), Tabac is one of the more polarizing scents out there - LOL. But I totally dig it. You might want to sample it first.

    My suggestions:

    AZZARO Pour Homme Intense
The 2015 version. This has a really great boozy opening, and it nicely transforms into an amber-supported interpretation of old-school Azzaro. Anyone who enjoys Tom Ford Fougère d'Argent should give this a try.

DEMETER This Is Not A Pipe
Demeter has produced a lot of tobacco scents over the years, but this is my favorite of the ones I've tried. It's a very natural tobacco aroma softened with some slight vanilla, but this is no gourmand.

    ENGLISH LAUNDRY Windsor
An impressively good designer-y take on a Spicebomb/Burberry London sort of thing, though I like this better than either of those. Think mulled wine and tobacco.

    MAC Shadescents My Heroine
This 2016 MAC release looks as though it was the testing ground for the formula for 2017's Tom Ford Noir Anthracite. The main difference between them is My Heroine's lack of Sichuan pepper and the presence of a suede-y leather. Ingredient/blend quality is as good as anything you'll find in the TF lineup. Ignore the name and bottle; this is very masculine stuff.

    PERFUMER'S WORKSHOP Samba Skin Man
Do you want a mellow, sweet, chocolatey tobacco scent you can use as a dumb reach? Look no further. This cheap-as-dirt release is tremendously easy to wear, a great choice for someone who wants a tobacco gourmand that is more smooth than oppressive or syrupy. No "scented candle" vibes here!

Thanks for reminding me again of this one! I used to own it back in the day and loved it. Gap had one that was similar that I used too wear too Gap Om...discontinued

    I'll add a couple

CO Bigelow Elixir Black Cologne: Spicy and sweet. Has a vanilla feel in parts but I get more spice than vanilla. This is great with a sweater or sweatshirt on the weekend. Semi Varvatos feel to it...speaking of

Varvatos Vintage: You can find this cheap online vs the store and I love this stuff. Spicy and sweet tobacco with a smooth woody feel. Has a 80s/90s feel and great for Fall

    Might buy:

Goodfellow Cedarwood & Geranium Cologne: I've tried this at Target multiple times now and love it. It's cheap at $19.99 and lasts a decent amount. I get a lot of cedarwood with a bitter citrus...orange maybe...and cinnamon feel with geranium lightening it a bit. Reminds me of Fall.

I saw a Paris Hilton men's cologne at Burlington last week, but I couldn't remember which one has the underrated good reputation on this site. I think there are a few men's scents by Paris Hilton, but I couldn't remember which one got such high marks so I left it.

I have a bunch of this stuff too and picked up a few of the body wash tubes as well. Its quality, array of notes and potency more than make up for that horrible sprayer! I've read where it's been discontinued, and prices have jumped accordingly.

Never met one I didn't like, but I think Just Me is the one you are referencing.

I like Jacomo de Jacom Rouge a lot, but none of the others all of which I have tried.

    Thank you TC,

Always love these posts you do.

FYI - I always used to see the Zirh at the bargain shops like TJ Maxx, never considered it. I will have to see if it is still around!

For me, fougeres go really well in the Fall. It gives that dew damp dirt, almost decomposing leaves/green and cool sense of Fall.

    Brut by Faberge
Art of Shaving - Green Lavender
    Vintage Old Spice Burley
    Ralph Lauren - Polo Green
Bijan for men (might be a bit much/strong for some people, so go really light on the application)

And although it's not really 'cheap', but it's my current Fall favorite........Frederic Malle - Bois d'Orage (aka, French Lover). Absolutely the most fitting and gorgeous fall scent I've encountered. Wore the hell out of it last Fall and put a giant dent in it during that season.

Lomani Body and Soul skews a little more toward Winter, but I wanted to get Lomani mentioned in this thread. There is great value in their line.

Lomani Best and Lomani PH both fit into that fougere mold of DN, Dakar, Caesar's Man, etc. too and are great for fall and practically given away.
