Default Just need a couple of recommendations.

    Hello,
I'm really interested in starting a collection. I read the sticky for the "$200 starter set" but I think for now I'd just like to start with two or three.

Could you guys recommend a couple of good all-arounders?

Good freshie in the contemporary style: Missioni Pour Homme

Good gourmand in the contemporary style: L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme Eau de Parfum

Good oud in the contemporary style: Franck Olivier Oud Touch

None of these will break the bank, they're all versatile and appealing, and they're all so sufficiently well-made that they'll survive in your collection as you try and add other things.

    Is $200 the desired budget?
    I'd say
    A freshie: Guerlain Vetiver
    An all rounder: Dior Homme
    A warmer one: Chanel Egoiste

Wow...leaving the door that wide open, there are so many options to give. An all arounder? I have several fragrances that aren't typically considered an 'all arounder'. But I like to always point people to Aqua Di Gio Profumo. It's pretty versatile no matter the year and no matter the temp.
I just sampled K by D&G and it's a good one that you can wear anytime as well.

Very nice recommendations, I support these three fully and one would be hard pressed to find better.

I’m adding Guerlain Habit Rouge, acquired taste but once it clicks oh wow it’s a nice classy fragrance and imo would round out a collection with the other three mentioned fragrances! Guerlain Habit Rouge EDT is my favorite version but the EDP is just as nice as is Habit Rouge L’Eau.

Welcome to Basenotes! I think it's a good idea to start out with fewer scents that you really enjoy. Below are some good versatile options you might like to try.

    Guerlain Vetiver
    Hermes Terre d'Hermes Parfum
Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio Profumo
YSL l'Homme OR La Nuit de l'Homme
    Creed Aventus

Also adding Mugler Cologne as a versatile fresh option, quite widely available and fairly inexpensive as well

    Some of my favorite all-arounders:

The sensitive intellectual: Dior Homme EDT
    The daring bad-boy: Dior Fahrenheit
The quiet, handsome, reliable dude: Allure Homme or YSL L'Homme
The smart guy with the easy laugh: Bleu de Chanel
The sartorial gentleman: Chanel Pour Monsieur EDP, or Tom Ford Noir
The barbershop hipster: Paco Rabanne Pour Homme
    The urban designer: Terre d'Hermes
The casual beach-goer: Acqua di Gio (original or Profumo)
The intellectual hipster: Comme des Garçons 2 Man

Of course, one man may have any number of these personalities within him, so you pick what matches your mood for the day.

Do you have anything for a quickly approaching middle age farmer who spends all of his time bailing hay, chopping firewood and fixing fences?

Honestly try the ones he mentioned above, and go through a bunch of samples. You're sure to find something you like.
