Default Ebay now charging sales tax

Just found out the hard way (of course there was no prior notice) that as of Oct. 1st Ebay is collecting sales tax. Not sure if it’s all 50 US states but definitely CA is included.

Huh. Interesting. A bit confusing. Maybe only on new products? I don't understand how sales tax could be applied to a used product. You'd think this would be in the news. Wonder about the future of other sites like Bonanza and Etsy.

Just noticed that with an eBay purchase yesterday. The amount did match our South Carolina sales tax (8.5%). And it was an a new item, not vintage or used.

This must be an accounting nightmare. Do they pass the collected tax $ on to the seller and then s/he has to keep track and file returns? Or does eBay do the accounting for the state? I'm sure all this is answered somewhere on an eBay "help" page.

I’m assuming it will only be on new items? That’s what I bought. Ebay said they will be collecting and remitting the tax on behalf of the seller.

eBay has been under a great deal of pressure to do this, as it has been doing an end-run around state sales taxes (or enabling its users to do so). It's not such an onerous thing to pay them, and better it's eBay's logistical nightmare than ours.

I've been charged sales tax on ebay purchases since last Oct.
After Jan. the tax portion has been a separate ebay charge on my paypal account.
    Just the way it goes.

Not all states are requiring it yet, but the majority are.

It must only apply to states with sales taxes. I'm in Oregon and bought something from ebay earlier and it didn't charge me.

Connecticut started months ago. Both used and new items are taxed at our state sales tax rate. When I had to return a defective item, my sales tax was also refunded by eBay (separate from the seller refund).

It would make sense that states with no sales tax would collect no sales tax on behalf of its residents who buy on eBay.

I's not just eBay either. Tax is also collected when I buy from Amazon and Etsy.

Got an email as well about eBay UK 'tax changes'. Didn't read it as my account is still set to close. Had enough of these muppets and their unfair policies.

So it's based on buyer's location, not the seller's?

This sucks, I was enjoying a tax-free buying experience on ebay!! Actually it may be a blessing in disguise, my ebay habit was starting to creep up to out of control. Theres only so many sunglasses, and shoes, and fragrances, and watches, and sneakers, and hats, and so on.. that one dude should own.

Man, that tax is STEEP! I realize it's based on the buyer's location and not some arbitrary figure from eBay, but it's still shocking to see the actual cost of an item (especially vintage) when all is said and done. I knew eBay would succumb someday, but yikes.
