Default Calvin Klein Escape for Men

Having worn this one when it was first released, I was quite shocked to see that it is still in production, at least for the UK market.

I recently picked up a bottle (because at that price you just do) and was astonished at how strong it is. A little goes a long way. In return you are rewarded with sage/rosemary, grapefruit and musk. I find it very long lasting and great after a hot shower. Or if you are lucky enough to live in a country that has something remotely resembling decent weather this makes the perfect versatile scent.

I’ve found so few threads on it that I wondered how many Basenoters own it. So over to you Basenotes - your thoughts, if you please!

I own and love Escape. It was my wedding day scent — a gift from my bride. Still have some from that original bottle. I get that particular bottle out every year on my anniversary.

I’ve had my bottle since about 2002, so I’m not sure how it compares with what’s available now. I seldom reach for it, but when I do, I seem to always receive a compliment...

I’ve always found it to be a pleasant wear and a fragrance that suits the office, time spent on a patio in the summer with friends or just running errands. I may have to blow the dust off of my bottle, because I’d be willing to bet that I haven’t worn it in at least 7 years...

Thank you for putting this back on my radar

Vintage Escape, up until somewhere around the early-mid 00's, was great. It used to have such a rich citrus smell in the top, but it's been diluted too much for me now. It's seriously one of the few fragrances i've gotten random compliments on. When I ordered a bottle last year, I could tell immediately that i'd received the diluted juice, when it was meant to be vintage. Sent it right back.

I own it and love it. The huge calone blast is a clear rip of Aramis New West (1988), but it goes its own way after about 30 minutes on skin. Romeo Gigli Sud Est (1995) is a more-garrigue version of this scent, basically being Escape with a splash of Eau d'Hadrien.

Wore Escape many years ago, but eventually tired of its harsh chemical overtones. This thread makes me want to give it another sniff. Absence, and an ongoing decline in designer fragrance quality, makes the heart grow fonder. Thanks for the recommendation.

I tried it when it first came out. Thought it was forgettable. The original Calvin continues to be for me the only one from this house I found nice.

Go for the vintage, if anything. Don't even bother with the current.

I've always heard good things and should give it another shot. I use to have a small bottle way way back, maybe around '99 or 2000. I am far too unfairly dismissive of Calvin Klein products because they overwhelm the shelves at the TJ Maxx and Marshall's around town.

I am really encouraged by how many of you have responded saying you own this one.

I find the current stuff (I guess it is a current bottle as there is a long list of ingredients) is superb. If you spray too much, the scent spoils. Use a little and it really lasts and projects for a whole day.

I agree the version now in the clear bottle does appear longer lasting on my skin.

I agree that it’s quite strong, it has a very early 90s vibe about it. Where they started messing with a lot of gun fruity notes and putting them over 80s style bases. I like the smell, but not on me. It’s a bit too much on the flamboyant side. The eucalyptus note is awesome though and very strong, and as strong as it is, the fruity notes and pepper overpowers it. There’s something about it that rubs me the wrong way. Also reminds me of fruit cocktail. The Fruity notes in this are not sugary sweet but they’re also not natural at all they’re kind of like medicinal too.

Eureka! I know what it is! It reminds me of that pina colada flavored/scented gel they put in your mouth at the dentist when before giving You Novacaine. That’s what this is medicinal piña colada.

I picked up a bottle about 6 months ago. I thought it was awful—just one gigantic, harsh melony calone note that dried down to a soapy White Musk. I wasn’t a fan at all.

I think I have a good idea of your taste in fragrances, and believe you'd actually appreciate the Calvin Klein Cosmetics Co. formula!

Is that the vintage stuff? It’s possible. I mean I bought the bottle because I looked at the notes and thought, “well...this could work.” It just smelled so cheap and abrasive out the gate it immediately ruined it.

Yeah, the stuff produced by CKCC is the original formula.

While admitting to not be ready (at least not yet) for getting this one at overpriced vintage rates, still admiring this personally very much for what this is and how inexpensively it may still be available.

Apart from all these rather practical and realist details, this fragrance might be suitable to help one (re) gain (again, among the strictly subjective standards)
with a fairly experience of bygone, albeit fairly recent past ages, of perfume trends, usually and luckily outperformed, at least in terms of creativity and that unpredictable elements by the fairly good and quite effortlessly complex present formulation of Escape.
