Default Penhaligon's Chester - a game of two halves!

I have just returned home from a little early Christmas shopping
    in Chester.
I visited Penhaligon's (along with Jo Malone, Space NK and
Browns/Debenhams) and was greeted by a charming, young man, who was both
informative and extremely helpful. He directed me towards the Christmas gift section and
gave me a run-through of what they all contained. Excellent.
Unfortunately, when I went to pay at the counter,
I met his alter ego - a lady, who obviously needs a bit of re-training. I asked her the
price of the items I was purchasing and pointed out that no price was shown.
She actually replied "Oh, this isn't the kind of shop where we put prices on things!!"
    Flabbergasted I was......

Is it just me or was that rather rude?

O.k. I take it was just me!

Maybe I was being too sensitive but
    I didn't enjoy the experience.

I expect the prices to be shown!

The female sounded like the old saying 'Well if you have ask the price then you cannot afford it!'

That's exactly how it made me feel, Donna!
I just didn't see the need for her to say it.

No Kewart, it’s definitely not you. The second SA was beyond rude to say such a ridiculous thing.

Since living in the Middle East, I rarely buy things in shops where they don't even care to put price tags on, unless it's a bottle of water.
They have their principles, I have mine.
Beyond rude behaviour IMO. I would turn my back and walk away.

    Rude and also very elitist.

Condescending. Only one word I can find for this. Let us know an update.

Agreed. Will be interested to hear how (or if) they respond.

I would have reminded her that regardless of my income level, I'm not going to fork over an undisclosed sum of money just for the privilege of her customer service. I need prices just as much as I bet she needs a paycheck.

I have just received a reply from Penhaligon's and a
    sincere apology.
They say they do display prices in their store (although they were not
in evidence at the store in Chester, when I was there.)

They also do not wish to be seen as a company that is
unwilling to talk about price in their shops.

Maybe a lesson has been learned. I hope so.

That’s encouraging- at least a step in the right direction. I’m glad you spoke up.
