    Default Patchouli based Masculine scents.

I like patchouli as dominant note not like supporting note in cologne.
My favorite is Givenchy Gentleman l. Old school masculine patchouli scent that it seems nobody can make it anymore these days.
I tried different patchouli scents but they were either too soft or feminine or patchouli was not main note that I was looking for.

Can you suggest something that is in line with givenchy gentleman but unique in its own way. Please do not recommend any unisex colognes I believe in gender classification of frags.

The outstanding vintage Giorgio for Men by Giorgio Beverly Hills would be a good start.

Javanese Patchouli by Zegna is light years different from Gentleman and a more modern option, but definitely Patchouli focused and absolutely amazing smelling too, IMO.

    Other great vintage options are:

    Balenciaga pour Homme by Balenciaga
    Moods Uomo
    by Krizia
    Lucifer
    by Renaissance Fragrances
    Fendi Uomo
    by Fendi
    Current Top Ten:
    1) Portrait of a Lady original formula (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    2) Giorgio V.I.P. for Men (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    4) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    5)
Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)
    6) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    7) Javanese Patchouli (Zegna) - tie
    7) Monsieur de Givenchy vintage (Givenchy) - tie
    7) Coeur de Vetiver Sacré (L'Artisan) - tie
    7) Polo vintage (Ralph Lauren) - tie

I second Giorgio for men, a more floral take on Givenchy Gentleman in the current formulations.

Some more options, starting with most expensive:

    1) Frederic Malle Monsieur. Lots of patchouli, Opens with bitter orange and booze, and has charred incense underneath acting as the backbone.

    2) Tom Ford Patchouli: mossy patchouli fragrance with a classic rosemary and citrus blast in the opening.

    3) Santa Maria Novella Patchouli: an Italian take on Givenchy Gentleman

    4) Diptyque Tempo. This one making a step toward gourmand territory with its hint of chocolate

    5) Guerlain LIDGE: a cheaper, classier but flatter take on Diptyque Temp

    6) Guerlain Heritage EDT, the best patchouli fragrance ever, possibly the best men’s fragrance period.

Heritage is definitely not patchouli based I have vintage Heritage EDP and I also have Roja take on Heritage Danger but both colognes are not even close for me to masterpiece that is Gentleman.

Frederic Malle Monsieur. It can become a little stinky if it's too warm out.

Vintage Givenchy Gentleman is the best in this category.

Some good suggestions here, I'd add these two -

Seconding Mazzolari Lui for a very macho thing (musks, patch, woods, leather)-but it is definitely less refined that givenchy.

So what you mean is that you "believe in" what a marketing department has decided is masculine, and don't trust your own sense of smell to determine how masculine a fragrance seems.

    Patchouli Nobile by Nobile 1942

There’s nothing unisex about this one to my nose. This is a barbershop patchouli.
If you insist on thinking Givenchy Gentleman is the best then the thread is completely pointless and you should just use GG, however if you are open minded you may discover some other wonderful patchouli fragrances. Good luck with your search.

I mean since marketing departments realized they can sell more if they create colognes with no distinct masculine or feminine character you don’t really have too many offerings like Yatagan, Gentleman or Bois du Portugal.
That and ban on some of the ingredients that were available in the past

Patchouli is, thankfully, one of those perfume notes that is free of so much gender baggage, mainly because it was popularised and worn by both sexes in the 1960s. What you're really asking for is a patchouli-based scent with other notes that will suggest something masculine, i.e. have those cultural associations with masculine smells. Things like leather, woods, vetiver, animalics, etc equate to being manly rather than something sweet or with florals being more feminine.

The suggestion of Giorgio for Men is really bang on, as it's perhaps Givenchy Gentleman's more unruly broother. Only get it in vintage though, as the modern stuff is cheap and rather nasty.

Mazzolari Lui is a good choice, if you want something animalic and a more pure patchouli.

Fragrance stores are still divided between feminine and masculine. What has changed in the last 30 years or so is that "men's" fragrances have gotten lighter and sweeter. "Women's" fragrances sweeter still. One could argue that both have gotten more juvenile.

Patchouli Nobile is warm, but very earthy and deep. If you really wanted a great patchouli I'd buy this.

If you want something more austere, Lorenzo Viloressi or Santa Maria Novella make excellent straight-up patchoulis that don't fool around.
