Default The Opening of Vintage Polo

    Good afternoon,

I am hoping I have what is a simple, easy to answer question. My all time favorite scent is the Cosmair version of Polo. What I like most about it is the opening. The first 5 minutes is heavenly to me. Particularly that first spray! Wow! Nothing can compare. Can anyone recommend ANY fragrance with the same opening? If not, what combination of scents (fragrance oils) would you recommend I purchase to try and recreate that opening.

    Thank you,

    Chad

I wish I could say. I quite like the base of Polo, which to me is in the realm of Givenchy Gentleman.

You probably just want to collect different versions of Polo.

chad, welcome! Try the vintage forum. This thread may get moved there anyway, by a mod.
I love POLO but haven't tried the Cosmair since back in the days when it was the actual scent they had in production. Formulations have been tweaked over the years by the Luxury Products line but I've heard the new batches over the past year or so are very good and much improved. You could go that route.
I love current POLO, despite it's drop in quality and restrictions and whatnot.

Probably the best route to take.

+1 wore my 2018 bottle last night and it smelled great next morning the dry down was on my chest (skin) even after scrubbing multiple times in the shower ha, originally applied to my t-shirt 3.5 sprays!

Polo does that smell better than any other. I can't think of anything else that does it justice.

Chevignon has the general smell of Polo, and it's quite cheap.

But it's nowhere near the quality and richness.

Would perhaps also consider getting the vintage of this one, especially should an affordable offer of this one become available at some point

The opening is great, as is the drydown. I love the middle ground, where it's still fresh and hasn't dried up yet but it's slowly starting to. It's a fresh, invigorating yet dirty smell all at the same time.
I don't know, nor have I ever heard, anyone compare another fragrance to this one.

Thank you all for your thoughtful comments. Looks like I just need to try to find some vintage bottles! (and maybe try Chevignon)

I enjoyed the Cosmair version over the other ones.

Have you tried anything new? 2018 and above?

Nope. I last tried it about 2-3 years ago and was surprised at how bad it was compared to the Cosmair version. Like a different fragrance to me. Funny thing is, the "Classic Match" version of it by Belcam that you can pick up for about $8 on Amazon smells more like the vintage than what I smelled a couple of years ago. I guess I need to go into a department store this weekend and try the newest.

    Thanks,

    Chad

Just be sure to check the batch code on the tester. Lotta old Polo testers out there.

Yeah, try a brand new bottle. Watch the testers.
And, Dear Lord, I hope the Classic Match version isn't what Cosmair use to smell like. I like Classic Match, but it doesn't smell very close to Polo to me. I can tell when smelling it that they were trying to imitate it but the difference is miles apart to my nose.
Granted, I haven't smelled Cosmair since back when it was on department store shelves.

Sorry for misleading anyone. What I mean to communicate is that Classic Match is closer to Cosmair than the last real Polo I tried in a department store, not that it is the same. I just feel that the last one I tried in a department store (probably 2016) was that bad.

    Thank you,

    Chad

I know what you meant. And I have heard many people here say that as well. I'll need to get a Cosmair bottle.
But Classic Match is quite harsh at first. It settles down for a good spicy woods type scent but it dies off too fast after being unbelievably strong.
