Default If you could have 3 and only 3 fragrances from now until the end - which 3, and why? (no 'buts'...)

Yes, it's another 'forced reduction' question - but not just focusing it on 'the 1', which always feels too restrictive and impractical.

If you were forced to pick from anything and everything you have tried and worn up until today, and you couldn't buy another new bottle (you can replace the ones you choose as/when they run out), I'd like to hear the thought processes behind cutting down. However...

    - No decants of anything else.
    - No imitation oils or aftershaves as 'separate' from the 3 - perfumed soaps and deodorants are ok as they don't interfere, body sprays etc. are not.
    - No honourable mentions: just pick 3.
    - No resurrecting disappeared fragrances: if you choose vintage, it has to exist within the current parameters of the used market i.e. cost and availability.
    - Same goes for any selection: it can't be 'magical'. If it's expensive then it doesn't become less expensive; if it's been reformulated, it doesn't get re-reformulated etc.
    - No +1s. I'm just asking for three. 3 forces you to really think about each selection rather than tacking on an extra without being decisive. This is the whole point - ruthlessness in the name of fragrance 'loves'.

3 is a solid number - it's reasonable. It's not getting in to the realm of a collector. It allows for variation without excess. It's probably not far from what most men own - 1 or 2 bottles with maybe an aftershave thrown in.

I just want to see what people would really, truly boil down their collection to if they had to. If you were to give up on the collecting, give up on the sampling, let go of the fascination with new releases, and focus purely on what you love, why you love it, and which 3 you had to wear for the rest of you life - what are you choosing, and why?

    Perhaps some things to consider?

    - Versatility
    - Availability/cost
    - Wearability/public perception
    - How each of the 3 differs with each other

Would be nice to hear the thinking behind each pick as well. I imagine loads of people will hate the idea of giving up trying new releases, or losing a collection, but just play along even if it hurts!

    EDIT:

Oh, and to perhaps to make it more interesting, if you were to categorise them in any way, it would be good to have at least one as a designated 'work' scent - but if you'd rotate all 3/no longer work, then that's cool as well!

Amouage Asrar. Simply put, this is my favorite that i have tried so far.
    Puredistance M - this is a close 2nd i think.
BR540 - My wife adores it on me.

I'll answer, but I think "availability" is a futile thing to consider, since what is widely available today may not be available ten years from now. So choosing three based on what I might conceivably be able to repurchase makes no sense to me. All things in life are transient, so you have to cherish what you have when you have it and embrace the fact that that time may be short.

    So, three:

MICHAEL KORS Michael for Men (2001)
The why here is obvious to me: it makes me feel like myself, more than anything else I own. I enjoy other scents for where they might take me or who they might allow me to imagine myself as, but this is the one that fits me like a glove.

FLORIS Leather Oud (2014) - This is a tremendously comforting scent for me, and it's a pretty versatile one, all things considered,. A good daytime leather with a sophisticated composition and the ambiance of a solarium filled with fresh flowers.

DIOR Eau Sauvage EDT (1966) - I suppose I must have a warm weather fragrance, and if it's to be anything, it would have to be this classic.

    Very close to mine.
I'd swap Musc Ravageur for Givenchy Gentleman.
Original Kouros because it's iconic, multifaceted, superbly performing and sweeps away anything I've tried from major houses in recent history.
Rive Gauche Pour Homme because it's suits my personality and age and is fine for any occasion and any weather.
Givenchy Gentleman because of it's depth and evocation of a time when perfumes had real character ( plus, like Kouros it can have an almost narcotic quality on me at times.)

    A valid point.

I suppose I raised in relation to what is available right now. So, if, let's say, they discontinue Bentley Absolute or Montblanc Explorer in 5-10 years' time, right now you have the option of buying 10 bottles for about £300 or £350 respectively. Which obviously sets you up for life. Counter that with their equivalents/inspirations - Gucci Pour Homme is hard to find, costs between £1-2/ml, and Aventus comes with its own issues of batches, cost etc. I suppose I was thinking about specific situational purposes that would possily influence what I'd choose, but if we say 'availability as it is today' rather than what it might become, maybe that makes it easier - but it's a good point, I see what you're saying, as there is a flaw there.

Good pick as well with good descriptions.

    1. Aventus - Perfect for most situations, dates/office/anything, smells amazing. Performs well but not my preferred choice for very cold weather.
    2. Spicebomb Extreme - for cold weather, nights, dates. But still acceptable in the office if not overapplied.
    3. Kilian - Black Phantom (I currently only own a clone of black phantom, but to my nose they smell very similar) - This one is perfect for the cold weather, and a very well done & interesting gourmand.

Its so hard to pick just 3. Thinking about my list I have 2 cold weather frags and only 1 (aventus) that is easily wearable for warm weather. (Very hot in Texas usually) I still think I could get by with these 3 on almost any day as long as i did the right amount of sprays.

    Chanel Pour Monsieur
    Givenchy Gentleman
    Chanel Antaeus

    These are my three favorites.

Pour Monsieur is the safe pick. Egoiste would be similarly safe. An easy option to wear anytime that's not too strong.

Givenchy Gentleman gives me that impossible-to-resist feeling after a little development.

Antaeus has a rich, interesting opening, and the base isn't too far off Givenchy Gentleman.

Current formulation of each, no (or at least much fewer) second thoughts, most if not all of these 3 on budget and quite readily/easily available as well, all 3 being on the classic side therefore quite an impressive personal plus for each, also irrespective of any particular order:

    - Armani Eau pour Homme

    - Knize Ten

    - Esencia Loewe

Very tough. No excuses, here goes:

Gentlemen Only: For the office. Fresh, clean, interesting, modern.
Giorgio BH For Men: Gotta have my powerhouse fix forever and will handle my patchouli (favorite note) desires.
Un Bois Vanille: Comfort scent for the evenings.

I'm surprised to see Live Jazz on anyone's list here but there are times when it strikes me as up there with the great YSL scents and unbeatable in warm weather.

    1. POLO -- Like Brooks describes his fave, Polo makes me feel most myself, as fragrances go.

    2. Green Irish Tweed -- A nice anytime scent. If Polo weren't around, this would probably be my number 1.

    3. Eau Sauvage Parfum 2017 -- It's not something I would typically reach for but something about it, how it's blended. It's great. I usually wear it in summer but it's great for any time of year.

It has *something* to do with that. That's the 2014 revamp, which stripped out the tobacco and plum notes. It's not bad; it's a bit thinner than the original 2001 take and more "designer"-y in the modern sense (i.e. more obviously synthetic).

If you wanna try the original, there are a lot of 1 oz bottles floating around. I've purchased some from this seller.

    1. Bleu de Chanel Parfum

I love it and it's the best "every and any situation" fragrance I've come across ever. It easily spans all seasons and covers casual to formal.

    2. Invasion Barbare:

It has the traditional character of a masculine barbershop presented in a luxurious and elegant quality that is unmatched. I was amazed by IB when I first tried it 10 years ago and I still am. And I really just like the way this stuff smells.

    3. Initio Side Effect

This has become one of my favorites. For cool and cold weather, dates, and nights out this would be my go-to choice. It takes a popular theme (cinnamon/vanilla/tobacco/rum) and does it to perfection.

    This is a fun challenge...

    1. Terre d'Hermes Parfum - TdH was my fragrance first-love, and the best combo of vetiver and Iso E Super (better than Encre Noire, much as I love that one). The dirty orange citrus side is nice in warm weather, and the flinty vetiver is great in cool weather. An all around winner for me.

    2. Ombre Leather - Leather is maybe my favorite note behind vetiver, and this one is like my Platonic ideal of leather. Narrowly edges out Tuscan Leather because of its focus on leather and less sweet fruitiness.

    3. Elie Saab Oud - One of my favorite ouds - astringent, woody, bracing, similar in vibe to Gucci Guilty Absolute, but taking the harsh-medicinal-bandage vibe in an oud direction.
"To 'give style' to one's character-- a great and rare art!" - Nietzsche
