Default L' Artisan - Mass discontinuation.

I received an e-mail today from L' Artisan, that said this :

" L’Artisan Parfumeur invites you to say goodbye to old friends at exclusive prices for a limited time. Make the most of this unique opportunity to indulge in a selection of expertly crafted fragrances and home scents before they are gone forever. "

I counted 22 frags that apparently are being discontinued, including a bunch of old favorites :

Timbuktu, Merchant Loop, Safran Trublant, Tea for Two, among a number of old classics of theirs.

I suppose the new owners have determined that these things are no longer selling, but I was shocked to think they'll be gone I'll admit.

Edit : Well what the heck, a day later the link that was included in the email, with the text listed above, takes you to the very same page (which yesterday also included the same heart-tugging text above) with the same items and same discounted prices, but now all mention of discontinuation has been deleted. Perhaps someone decided that it was not a wise move to publicly commit to discontinuation at this time ? So who knows what they are up to. See for yourself :

Got the same e-mail. Fortunately have bottles of all the ones slated to be discontinued.

I noticed that several from the list were in the 50ml size... Perhaps that's a format which will no longer be available?

More likely that's what they have left in stock.

Following a well trod path. Reformulation gutted them already, and now they get discontinued.

I think Timbuktu for me is an all time favorite “if I could keep just one this would be it” scent. The older formulation.

Fortunately there are a lot of bottles you can buy and will be able to buy for a long time on places like eBay.

Dang. They were one of the earliest niche brands I explored as a newbie. Still want a bottle of Safran Troublant.

I've been wondering about this for awhile. A lot of the older style bottles are at the discounters, but some newer ones too. Stuff that retails for $227 here, being sold online for as low at $65 cdn.

Are they out of their minds??? Or are they just trying to get a bump in their end-of-year sales from the addicts?

I've had a bottle of Mechant Loup in my wardrobe for the last 14 years. Looks like I will have to stock up.

Goddamnit, I'll have to get a backup of Safran Troublant. Not only do I enjoy it for itself, but layered with Egoiste it's a very good substitute for the Bois des Isles that I can't get in NZ.

Sad state of affairs. Wish I could get more vintage Voleur de Roses, all of the classics have been watered down/reformulated already.

That’s alright, Bertrand Duchaufour has made a career out of Timbuktu flankers. May not smell identical, but he has rolled out that style of sweet, vetivery, incency fragrance again and again like a mercenary with one sword.

I have fairly full bottles of the ones I love that are being discontinued so I'll be okay. The only one that I have a near empty bottle of is Fou d'Absinthe but I've got a 50 ml back-up of that one so I'm safe. It does make me sad for the brand though, but honestly they've been on a downward trajectory for several years now. They are one of the great houses that started this whole niche perfume thing though, so I'll give credit where credit is due.

Does anyone have the full list? I wore Dzing! Today and my lady is wearing Timbuktu in bed right now.

Safran Troublant and Premier Figuer are old favs. Dzongkha is brilliant, so is Merchant Loupe. I’m bummed. Which ones do I need to grab before they’re gone for good?

Did you realize that the list also features L'Eau d'Ambre and the Extreme version (in addition to a bunch of Giacobetti's and some of the most popular Duchaufour's)? How is this even possible?

Just for the sake of promoting unfounded conspiracy theories: Is it conceivable this sudden contraction of L'Artisan's lineup is in anyway connected to the supposed decimation of Caron's catalogue?

Tell me that again in two weeks when the third niche house announces it's cutting half its product line.

Niche is slowly dying and transforming into luxury/status/prestige anyway, with very little -actual- niche flavor. We'll have to look towards artisanal houses for that pretty soon.

I've got the e-mail as well. Most of the stuff in the sale are 50ml bottles, so I wonder whether it's just that particular bottle size that is being discontinued for some fragrances?

It also look like all of the fragrant wooden boules are being discontinued, too...

once they closed their lovely store in Marylebone, London and started using inferior bottles, I knew the writing was on the wall
