I am pretty good at it, as I know the notes that I like or dislike.

A friend of mine used to moan about how people used to buy music blind (before the internet, kids) and then spent more time with albums that didn't appeal to them on a first listen and that they learned to understand and appreciate them as they were stuck with them.

That's as good as blind buying perfume could get, I guess. Wise decision to not to it!

I love using songs and music in general as an analogy for fragrances. Tangentially, how many of us have heard a song or album and thought, "Meh, where's the hook?" Only to realize after a handful of listens just how amazing it actually is. For example, Springsteen's Darkness on The Edge of Town . Fragrances are often the same way imo.

I avoid blind buys all together. Sampling first and doing research is how I roll.

If it’s cheap or highly desireable and easy to resell, I don’t mind blind-buying.

I would say that over 95% of everything I own was blind bought

Oh, my goodness! Never again blind purchases!

Thousands of €uros spent in vain because I rely on - pardon - "fuckin' smell pyramids" of manufacturers!

Only buy after live test or original sample!

This is an underrated quality of the blind-buyer. You need to have an open, optimistic mindset. Then you're more likely to enjoy what you buy. If you're one of those crotchety, "everything sucks" types, or if you're simply very picky, then blind buying is not the answer and it's much better to sample.

im probably 50/50 as well. i try to only blind buy ones that i really am unable to sample but sound like something i would really like.

I did a lot of blind buying when I started out. Now I sample almost everything before I buy it. I do still occasionally make a blind purchase. Success rate is pretty good. A quick look at the note breakdown online and skim though a few reviews and that usually gives me a good idea if I'll like it or not.

I blind-buy vintages because, as often as not, it's easier than hunting down a sample and (unicorns aside) not all that much more costly. I wouldn't take that approach to the likes of Roja Dove and Areej le Doré. I have a top price point in mind for blind buys, then I look for examples at or below that point. Sometimes I go over, but rarely and not by much. Like any other form of gambling, don't bet more than you can afford to lose.

Most of my favorites have been blind buys from your recommendations:

Rive Gauche, Derbe: both recommended when I was looking for a formal. Both fabulous.
Burberry Man and GIT: hednic and NCal reviewer like, so I followed. Excellent.
    Recent Tuxedo, YSL. PERFECT.
Aventus, Bois de Portugal. All from here. Perfect Blind buys.
Numerous others. Bought Floris Santal because Placido Domingo wore it. My favorite for evenings.
Prada L'homme... Simple lavender search for daily use. Right on the mark.
One bad... Blind bought Versace Pour homme... Longevity 36...seconds

    Cheers

    Blind bought
Tom Ford Extreme - jury is still out.
Davidoff Zino - in the mail, vintage version.
Some say it smells like Beau de jour, some say it smells like heritage, i like both, though they dont smell super alike in my brain, never did a side by side. We'll see.

Congrats! I tried so hard to like Heritage, but at the end of the day, I couldn't get over the dominant patchouli note. Probably my least favorite note in perfumery

Ten-plus years ago, you could blind buy and easily bat over .500. As was said before, it was easier back then as there wasn’t as much crap out there as there is now. Back in the day, I blind-bought:

    Gucci pour Homme
    Gucci pour Homme II
    Gucci Envy
    Dior Homme
    Rive Gauche
    M7

...and many others that I still wear and love.

I’ve spent a lot on samples over the past few years and the majority of them were a hard pass as soon as I smelled them. So many options in the market place means that the number of “blah” fragrances and fragrances that seem to smell Interchangeable has grown exponentially.

I’ll still do TJ Maxx/Marshall’s blind buys occasionally. It’s like playing nickel slots at the casino.

“Informed” blind buys work pretty well for me.
