Cook.bot, you summed up things perfectly: "It's so hard to stay in love with a transportation service that doesn't love you back."

I ended up spending 7-1/4 hours on the same train (without water), stepping off in Chicago for only minutes to confirm with police (who were helping with crowd control) that our train was doing an immediate turnaround to Milwaukee. There were hundreds of people inconvenienced. Those waiting to leave Chicago on the train I'd been stranded on had stood in line for 4 hours, being teased along, told things would improve asap. The station benches overflowed because our train held up subsequent ones. Unimaginable how many connections were fouled for passengers. (Of course, ComDiva also was inconvenienced by my uncertain arrival, bless her.) I got vouchers to equal my costs, but small compensation against the scrambling panic of trying to make plans on the fly to get to ComDiva later and later, hopes artificially held aloft by not getting accurate news about our doomed situation. As best I can ascertain: Track crews had failed to complete some work over night as scheduled. I believe the crew works for Metra, which is the local commuter entity. It's hard to say who owns trackage. It's usually the freight lines, not Amtrak, which is lowest on the totem pole for rights.

CuddleCat, I hope your sinuses have stopped giving you trouble.

To lift my spirits, I'm going to the local Nordstrom this morn, which stocks half of what's in Chicago, but will let me check out a few things. I plan to come home good and stinky.

Good for you, Quarry; Nordie's is a nice consolation prize! Stink it up good! Still, your trip combined with my recent Disney experience (and some lesser inconveniences on other recent trips) makes me wonder if travel is just no longer the luxury it's cracked up to be. If this is the direction we're headed toward, costs will have to come down drastically to get any more big travel $$ out of me. Your story is just really disappointing and I know the experience didn't match the cost, even with vouchers! Staying home looks pretty good right about now! Just very sorry for you and ComDiva; you had such lovely plans. And thinking of those who may have needed the trip for healthcare, funerals or to visit ailing loved ones is infuriating.

Hello all,

I busted out my new bottle of Twilly d’Hermes Eau Poivree this morning and that’s what I’m wearing. Yes, I did purchase two new perfumes after my massive decluttering but I’m staying within my number limit. I’m heading up to the convalescent hospital in LA to visit my FIL. I get a lot out of the experience myself because he, and others, always seem happy to see me. I like the feeling of connectedness.
