    Default Favorite citrus-free vetiver?

Vetiver is one of my favorite notes, and I noticed something recently about the 10-15 vetiver scents I own: among the citrus-containing scents, there is much less variation than among the non-citrus scents. I like the classic vetiver/citrus combo, but at a certain point you realize it's never more than "variations on a theme." On the other hand, fragrances in my collection like Encre Noire or Gucci Guilty Absolute are clearly related, but as something like cousins as opposed to the fraternal order of vetiver/citrus.

What is your favorite citrus-less vetiver? What is the most out-there, unexpected use of this note?

You might want to try Route du Vetiver, Vetiver Oriental, Private Label or Villoresi Vetiver.

Lubin Le Vetiver and Vetiverissimo have minimal citrus as well.

I'll look into those. Route du Vetiver has been high on my list for a while - haven't sampled it yet but everything I've read sounds promising.

EDT is the real deal and yes it's a bit smokey and dry, it's an acquired taste.

This and Dior Vetiver would be my picks for non-citrus vetivers.

    Sycomore

If there is citrus, it’s negligible. Sycomore is my favorite pure Vetiver, although the current formulation pales in comparison to the original. I haven’t smelled it in about 5 years. I wonder if it’s been reformed again?

Another thing about Sycomore—it used to get a lot of attention, people discussing it all the time. But I haven’t seen a good Sycomore discussion around these parts in a while. Could be I just missed it, but I seem to recall it garnered much more interest in the past. Maybe that’s exactly because the new formulation isn’t that great? I don’t know. I imagine it’s still a very good fragrance.

+1 Route du Vetiver: This is a great dark, smoky, earthy Vetiver. It smells like you’re digging up Vetiver from the ground and have your head right there in the soil. If possible try to score a red bottle of it.

Annick Goutal used to have a fantastic vetiver. I’m not sure if they still make it, or the status of it.

Sel de Vetiver from The Different Company is also very good.

Thanks for the ideas everyone! Sounds like lots of good stuff for me to research and test.

The Sycomore EdP that I have (it's a 50 ml decant, so I'm not sure the batch/production details) is very nice, but definitely not smoky or "edgy" in the way I hear the EdT described. It's a really nice, soft vetiver and woods. I get a fairly strong sandalwood note in it, which really softens it. It reminds me a bit of Tam Dao but with a strong dose of vetiver added.

I think you'd appreciate Route du Vetiver or Etro Vetiver then. I agree Sycomore is smoky, but it's also velvet soft. If you want something earthier and more aggressive in its approach, those are at least a good starting point.

My vote for Vetiver extraordinaire, which I perceive as very zingy and dry but not citrusy.

My impression of Sycomore edp is as you say. Smoother, which is not really what I am looking for in a vetiver.

I find vetiver in Etro Shaal Nur rather unusual. I have always thought of Shaal Nur as a straightforward oriental, but another recent vetiver thread here made me do a double take (or sniff).

I wonder why Chanel chose to reformulate Sycamore to the degree of altering the smokey aspects of it, obviously restrictions of certain materials but there had to been a way to keep the heart of Sycamore. It’s part of their private line so mass pleasing couldn’t have been a reason or could it have been? I myself was late to the fragrance hobby and only have EDP left for a full bottle purchase anyway at retail prices.
