Default Suggestions for samples for my wife

    Hello,

Apologies... this post turned out longer than I thought it would be

A couple of years ago, I decided that for Christmas, I would give my wife a bunch of samples of perfumes. Each month, I selected 3-5 different samples (based on research of notes and reviews) and had them shipped to the house. She discovered a ton of perfumes that she loved, and a ton of them that she also hated.

Anyhow, I would like to do it again this year, and I'll be giving her one box to open on Christmas morning. So.. I'm looking for some suggestions on winter fragrances that I can add to the box. To give an idea of what she likes (and doesn't--if I can remember):

Loves (we bought full bottles of these)
Bottega Veneta. This is her go-to, daily wear.
    Diptyque Tam Dao
    Mugler Alien
    Creed Love in White
    Burberry Brit

    Likes
    VR Flowerbomb
    Tom Ford Black Orchid
    Serge Lutens (Daim Blond, chergui)
    Guerlain L'instant
Santal 33 (although this seemed to project a little too much)
    Creed royal princess Oud
    Amouage Fate Woman
Amouage Journey Woman (not as much as Fate Woman though)
Van Cleef and Arpels Ambre Imperial
    YSL Black Opium
    Creed Millesime Imperial

    Dislikes
Anything super floral (Exception is Byredo Night Veils Casablanca Lily Parfum Extrait which is amazing)
Anything sickly sweet--like candy teenager scents
    Arquiste Nanban
    Jo Malone Tuberose Angelica
Tom Ford Sahara Noir (I think she was on the fence with this one, but it was long ago)
    Chanel Coco
    Chanel Rue 31 Cambon
    Tauer L'air du Desert Marocain

    Hates
Really anything super synthetic. She hates Chanel 5 and (should mention) most Chanel in general.

    What I have in mind

Really thinking of starting with the following:

Shalimar (even though I think we tried it and she didn't like it...it's worth another shot)
    Tom Ford Oud Wood
    Creed Royal Oud
    Serge Lutens Arabie
    Penhaligon's Cornubia

Bonus for me on the Oud scents, as I like to wear those too, so I can steal some from her

Also, a long time ago, she used to wear Glow by J.Lo, which (hilariously) I absolutely loved on her. I think it was the combination of the musk, sandalwood, and vanilla. If anyone knows of anything with similar notes, I would appreciate a suggestion here.

These are all wintery scents, but I would love to hear all suggestions. I have 12 months of perfumes to think about, which is about 36-48 different scents.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome!

Orientals like Shalimar seem like a good idea. Plus if she likes vanilla. The other vanillic reference for Guerlain is Jicky, which could also be worth trying.

Given her likes, I was also thinking smooth leathers could work. Chanel Cuir de Russie being the greatest example. I have not smelled the J Lo but sandalwood and vanilla bring to mind Bois des Isles. But she doesn't seem to like Chanels...

Mona di Orio Vanille is a complex, woody vanilla, not the cupcake kind. l think she might love this one.

    +1 Vanille

I would suggest Tom Ford Amber Absolute.

    Another would be Chanel Egoiste.

If you can get a sample of it Creed Angelique Encens

May I suggest Samsara by Guerlain (as she likes Alien,)
Cuir Amethyste by Armani (as she likes leather in Bottega Veneta.)

Firstly, what a lovely idea! Happy to help out with such a thoughtful endeavour

Okay, so if I consider all the great info you’ve included above, it seems like she’s drawn to softer, woody oriental profiles, though she is open to branching out in other areas.
She enjoys vanilla, but no saccharine sweet candy perfumes
    Nothing too dry.
You say she doesn’t like heavy florals, but you have a few floral-forward choices in her likes and loves. I’d suggest not ruling this out, but narrowing the focus based on the things she likes or doesn’t. It may be a case of finding the right floral
She’s not a fan of Chanel. I don’t think these are any more synthetic than many of the other choices listed here - I wonder if it’s perhaps the aldehydes she doesn’t enjoy? Chanel No.5 is very aldehydic. Aldehydes often go hand in hand with floral compositions, so that would make sense given her responses to some of the florals she’s tried. Just a thought, of course, but it may help with selection.

Okay, so with this in mind, I’d suggest a warm oriental, non-aldehydic, with sweetness in the base. I’d experiment with some muskier profiles, as well.

Based on what you describe, one of the first suggestions that comes to mind is Bengal Rouge, by Papillon. Sandalwood, vanilla, rose, spices. There are some good reviews on basenotes, and Kafkaesque RAVED about it.

Parle-moi de parfum’s Milky Musk would be worth a look. Similar to Santal 33, but much softer in its presence. It doesn’t ‘shout’ like Santal 33 does and is much easier to wear.

Annick Goutal has a lot of florals that are non-aldehydic. Very French styled, and quite a few with vanilla in the base. It could be a good line to explore if you’re interested in trying some florals.

Of course, if you want to treat her with an opulent vanilla, there isn’t much to beat Tihota, by Indult. It’s expensive, but for many it’s a ‘holy-grail’ vanilla. I enjoy it, and am not normally a vanilla fan. This is gourmet vanilla, rather than candy.

Rather than Oud Wood, if you’re looking for something cosy that you could also borrow, I’d suggest Tabacco Toscano by Santa Maria Novella. It’s vanillic enough to be soft, is completely unisex, and is a very easy wear. Beautiful in this weather, but light enough to be lovely in summer too.

There are lots of great choices. If I think of any more, I’ll add to this.

Your wife has good taste. I think BV is the finest feminine leather created in the last 15-20 years.

Based on that, I think you should try ALL of the Hermes leathers; they have a similar soft suede vibe, but especially Kelly Caleche and Galop. Heck, a whole Hermes discovery set might be in order for her (except the Jardin series; they don't seem suitable to her taste.)

I'd also suggest skipping Oud Wood.

    Thanks for the well-thought-out response.

I usually use surrender to chance or the perfumed court to buy samples/decants.. but some of these, I cannot seem to find (i.e. - Milky Musk, Tobacco Toscana).

    I'll keep looking around

Sometimes the perfume company websites will sell samples.

Luckyscent has Milky Musk, including sample size. They carry Tabacco Toscano, too, though I don’t see samples; they might do one up if you ask.

I’ve updated my earlier post with the correct spelling of the SMN, btw, which may help with the search!

    Greetings.

Perhaps a house to consider is Serge Lutens. They are unique in their approach and also economically priced for being niche. If it seems too time consuming, you really can't go wrong with Shalimar. I even wear it and I am a male. Shalimar and Arpege are both classics that most women love.

Possibly also Velvet Orchid, Feminite du Bois, Lady Knize, Feminite du Bois by Shiseido/Serge Lutens (both versions being good), Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle
Currently wearing: Open by Roger & Gallet

Have you made up your mind yet, or still researching?
My rule of thumb when people ask for unique scents, my to go to are:Bonds, T Ford, Creeds and Malone. All their perfumes are unique and rich in scents. I like Mugller too, but i dont have many of his perfumes. I would add baccarat rouge 540, seems to be a universal like.

Is this a suprise gift or she can give feedback? I would suggest if there is no way to test the perfumes in some high end mall where the expensive perfumes do sell ( I am cheap though) to buy imitation oils samples. They may cost 2-3 dollars a pop, and the oils are very close. If the oil is a big no, so are the perfumes, you just saved yourself some bad samples. If oils are good, well, you know you can buy the original as well, but many of the oils are of very decent quality. Most people dont see any differences.

I do sell perfume oils, so take my statements for what they are , my 2cents. Just saying ....
www.impressiveBliss.com Uncut, strong and rich body oils and perfumes. Great impressions of fine fragrances.

Black Opium EDP Intense is new and my wife actually likes it (she dislikes the original).

Azzaro Wanted Girl is great, IMO, and likely fits her taste. It's a cross between Wanted (men's) and La Vie Est Belle. Outstanding performance, too.
