It’s “Hand me the Mucinex DM!” incense. The only fragrance ever that made me cough like crazy.

It's really quite pleasant, except for the smell (...)

Perhaps it's how the incense mixes or blends with the other notes that might suggest to you something mysterious about it.

It's the leathery type of incense. That is, to say, it smells only of leather (to me). Others may disagree.

The musky leather is so strong that it makes it hard to isolate a note. My guess is that it is close to the churchy variety, though not as literal as, say, Cardinal or Avignon. But it's hard to smell it in isolation. I don't own it, but it would be interesting to compare to the incense in Encens et bubblegum.

i've come to realise that in 'fragrance world' incense rarely resembles the liturgical version

In fragrance and elsewhere, I think "Incense" is just too broad a term to distinguish different types of incense smells--frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood, benzoin, cypress et. al. all smell different.

In my experience, liturgical incense is mostly frankincense, although some churches burn a blend of frankincense, myrrh, and benzoin.

I've used up my sample of Rien Intense, but it was mostly dark musks and leather, as I recall.

You mean whether Rien incense intense smells like cuir d'arabie? Not really. Both have an animalic note, but rien is primarily a musky leather while the Montale is primarily Montale's oud reconstruction.

I thought in your post you meant that you had smelled Rien and wanted to understand what the incense note is-but now I wonder if rather you just wanted to ask but have not smelled it yourself. If so, I don't think you should imagine Rien as an oud or as an incense. It is a strong musky leather. Not so much sharp hide (as in certain modern leathers a la Tom Ford), but the skin still attached to a big animal that's still breathing.

Tried this Rien a few times and couldn’t get past what smelled like a turps scent for Michaelangelo’s brushes. It doesn’t resemble any incense I’ve come across liturgical or otherwise.

There’s more oud in Royal Oud than incense in Incense Intense.

    Jeez this stuff makes me...
