Default Lack of olfactory bulbs and sense of smell

    https://www.bbc.com/news/health-50315440
    This is something else.
No (apparent) olfactory bulbs and to still have a "cracking sense of smell".

And for those interested in the actual study details.

I'm really interested in how/why this is found only in left-handed females.

Starblind, got delayed in getting to your comment... been working and traveling.

The thing is we don't know why almost 10% of population (variable in different sets) have left handedness to begin with.
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6345846/
It was done in UK cohort and is from early 2019.
But, female left handed individuals are rarer than males.
    Again, we don't know why.
    https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/b...t-handers-rare
The articles cites some valid, large n studies.

And then comes this shocker... you can't see olfactory bulbs on both MRIs except for stubs where bulbs should have been.
So, how did sense of smell develop?
Does the brain has this level of plasticity to adapt, work as ORN/olfactory brain?
We do have multiple studies (from the past) which suggested that olfaction survived bulbectomy thanks to ORNs directly targeting the forebrain to form “glomeruli-like structures” in cortex (Slotnick et al., 2004) and a similar pattern was seen before in mice (Graziadei et al., 1978)-- but both studies faced a lot of criticism for not confirming the actual microscopic absence of the OB.

Needless to say, we aren't dealing with mice anymore, these individuals (however small the no.) are humans giving solid proof.
There is no denying it now.
The next horizon of science of smell is "olfactory perceptual fingerprint".
How we develop it, what influences it, what specific areas of brain are involved and what role it's playing in daily human engagement, is where the conversation is going.
