Thread: Best beginner oud fragrance |
Hello BNers,
I'm looking to get into the dark side of fragrances. Particularly ouds. Whats the best beginner oud fragrance? I want something with real oud, not that fake oud like Oud Wood from Tom Ford.

Wow, thanks for those oud sources. I will check them out.

Desiger-perhaps the specific, sometimes disparate oud notes in M7, Habit Rouge, Songe d'un Bois d'Ete
Niche-the possibilities, even of comparatively simple, straightforward ouds are nearly limitless and far more permissive, especially Luxor Oud by Memo Paris did stand out as worth remembering and additionally recommending/experiencing

Versace Oud Noir. Non-harsh and basic introduction to Oud (or synthetic oud).
Bvlgari Man Black Orient.
One that isnt very expensive but worth checking out is Oud by Elie Saab, Francis Kurkdjian is the perfumer. Im sure it isnt real oud but that is one that honestly could fool me. Also 100% agree with checking out real oud oils though. Another place you can get samples from is Royal Bengal Ouds on etsy.
Ex Idolo Thirty-three and Byredo Accord Oud
Thanks for the suggestions, I picked up a bottle of versace oud because the price was so cheap. I'm looking at sampling some real oud but the prices are insanely high. $70-90 for 0.15gram? How much is even 0.15g?

If you can still find it, there was a dirt-cheap oud made by Korres of Greece. It was called something like Agarwood, saffron and amber. More like a long list of ingredients than an actual name, but literally at £25 for 50ml you couldn't go wrong.
The next best thing I would say is either YSL M7 (what's available today is just fine) or Balenciaga Pour Homme if you can find it for a more authentic oud.
Next up from that you should check out Ex Idolo 33 and the entire oud range from MFK.
Sahraa Oud by Fragrance du Bois is a very nice introduction to real Oud within a fragrance. It's a beautiful scent in it's own right with real oud front and centre, expensive though.

There's a new batch of Realoud at Phoenicia perfumes (https://www.phoeniciaperfumes.com). The maker is David Falsberg. His first batch was my first revelatory foray into the world of oud and I've been very keen on his products since. I have several bottles of the earlier batches plus an old Taiga one.
If you're looking for a more commercial offering, try grabbing a 20mL of Oud Palao from Diptyque on eBay or here on the forum.
There's also oud offereings from Brooklyn Perfumes (http://www.brooklynperfume.com). The first oud offering was supposed to be great, I missed that opportunity.
if you want to try real oud attars that are good but affordable, I would recommend Abdul Karim Al Faransi.
Abdul Karim Al Faransi.
a 1/4 tola (3ml) bottle is more than enough to sample well, and for £15-30 a go it's a cheap way of getting to know whether real oud is for you
+2 Modern "oud" sprays catered for the mass-market are skewing the perception of what oud should smell like. The real and natural ingredient is available and wearable on its own, so if you are looking for an authentic oud experience, you should start with the natural oils.
