It's OK, but kinda low on my list of favorite NM scents.

Crisp, clear, cool, floral champagne. Dries down very slowly to a balsa-light, perfect cedar base, holding the effervescent white wine quality the whole way.

It is VERY Chanel. But it's lighter, more subtle, radiant and unisex in a No. 5 L'Eau way.

Takashimaya is either my top NM scent or tied for first with Hula, Vanille Rosé, or Midnight Forest.

Wearing Midnight Forest now. I bought this instead of Hermèssence Vetiver Tonka. Imagine taking VT and keeping the exact cool of the tonka, but replacing vetiver with hyper-realistic yet subtle aromas of bark, moss, forest floor, and peat. Plus wee bits of perfume, as if it were present but more in the background.

Paid considerably less for a lot more story!

His "rain" scents are always good! Spectral Violet also impressed me a lot. Not an easy wear, but one of the best violets out there for a kind of goth-type beauty, wearing black, etc.

If you send Neil an email, he can recommend a couple of scents that you might like based on your preference. Many of his fragrances aren't listed on his website.

Siberia for Friday the 13th... but I’m SO done with winter, snow, slush and twenty layers of clothing!

I’m scouring my cabinet for something cold, or gulag-appropriate. So maybe that’s a sync for next year - literary reference fragrances. What would Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wear?

Luca Turin's review [ducks] for Creed Original Santal references Ulan-Ude, which is the third-largest city in Eastern Siberia, so I may go with that.

"A vile, cheap, cloying masculine that would be disheartening as the smell of the hotel shampoo in Ulan-Ude."
I also have Jimmy Choo Man Ice now!

When I think of Siberia, two different trains of thought emerge.

One, the beautiful, is of the vast and harsh lands, the beautiful taiga with evergreen spruces, the cold snowy winters, the wild animals and the good honest people living in these harsh conditions. This one evokes the cold, calm and piney scents, maybe animal furs and leathers, maybe smoke, because you need some fire to survive here.

Second, the scary, of gulags, of exiled people torn from their homes and families, the scared dirty people packed into animal wagons in the train, sent to work in harsh conditions just trying to survive the cold and the hunger. My grandparents were exiled to Siberia, Irkutsk, they met each other there. My Godmother was born in Siberia, but she was too small to remember anything. They came back when Stalin died. I haven't met my grandmother as she died when I was a baby, and my grandfather never spoke of the horrors he saw - even to his own kids. This thought stinks of fear and desperation and of unwashed bodies (or the brown laundry soap at best). I don't think anyone bathed during winters there much if at all. That would have been a waste of water, firewood and so on. They would of course build hothouses later when they are more well off, but not in the first months or even year I guess. You can freely choose your dirtiest and nastiest body odour scents here.

Clockwork, one can hardly imagine the horrors your grandparents went through, but it's wonderful that they found love even in the midst of such inhospitable circumstances.

l've been reading too about the melting of the permafrost releasing the stench of bodies of ancient mammoths & other creatures, that died long ago & never rotted, but were frozen in the ice. One can only imagine that horror, as well.

l have a few ideas in mind for this week: perhaps something evoking animal fur like L'Ombre Fauve, a smoky incense like Encens Flamboyant, something with Siberian fir like Chasing Autumn, or something cold & icy. l have an untried sample of First Snow by Neil Morris, which might do...

For Siberia, I'm choosing to focus on the landscape particularly the mountains. Something cold and icy could be appropriate to represent snow or for green grassy terrain perhaps something that is green.

What an incredible and touching story, Clockwork! As I read through, I couldn't help but visualize, your words paint a vivid picture. As an American, what little I know of the area comes from my love of history and literature.

That was a very powerful description and story, Alice. It almost makes me feel that trying to evoke either of Siberia's dual personalities in a mere perfume would be rather shallow and juvenile.

    A no-brainer for me tomorrow .

"The history of Russia and the family of Thierry meet since 1587. De Bachmakov was born, combining the talents of perfumer Céline Ellena and designer Thierry de Baschmakoff. Inspired by the Great Russia, its Siberian forests, taiga and tundra, Thierry and Celine give us a fragrance with Cedar wood notes mingled with fresh moss and spikes of Shiso leaves as well as other spices notes (Nutmeg, Coriander)".

ClockworkAlice - what a moving and evocative story of your grandparents !

I'm going with the landscape, so the obvious choice from my wardrobe is CdG Zagorsk - cold, snowy wastes with pine trees and some incense.
Might switch to Mona di Orio Cuir for the evening - birch tarry leather with cumin.
from May Eve to Midsummer : with leathers, greens, fougeres, and a few florals. Guerlain Vetiver; Etro Gomma; Palais Jamais and Dianthus; Hermes Equipage Geranium; Aramis Tuscany; first wearing of the year for Penhaligon's Juniper Sling; Caron Yatagan; Knize Ten, Sec, and Forest; Puig Quorum. Sampling : Aramis Devin; ELdO Eloge du Traitre, Fat Electrician

l chose to do a first-time sampling of First Snow by Neil Morris today, which isn't in the Directory, & l couldn't find a notes list anywhere.

l'll post my full impressions in the Neil Morris thread later, but this one seems suitably cold, piney & coniferous to represent a Siberian forest.

I wished I saved the weblink on that one. I only remember it was mentioned on a foreign website that mentioned a few irregular Neil Morris fragrances. That was around the time (2016?) that I was looking for new fragrances from the house to try as his website only showed old stuff.

First Snow smelled like winter fresh gum if I recalled.
