Fragrance confession time: I don't know how to pronounce Chergui. I know that this was probably covered in Basenotes 101, but I must have been absent that day. I've scoured the Internet and watched countless Youtube reviews looking for a proper pronunciation, but everyone seems to pronounce it differently. The thing is, I don't even think this is my most difficult to pronounce fragrance (...I'm looking at you, Fille en Aiguilles and Chypre de Coty), but my suspicions were confirmed when I asked my five-year-old to pick out a hard to pronounce fragrance for me to wear. After digging around my collection, he handed me a bottle of Chergui and said, "Wear this one! It's called Chair-Gooey."

And for what it's worth, he wanted to join in with the fun. Actually, it won't be long before he joins Basnotes himself. For a little kid, he has a pretty impressive collection of samples and niche decants that he must have stolen from me when I wasn't looking. He's wearing Eau des Baux by L'Occitane, which I agree is also pretty hard to pronounce.

Haha your options crack me up! Since I speak French most of my collection is quite easy for me. I've selected trente-et-un Rue Cambon, since it's one that seems to confuse most sales people. Most numbered Chanel's tend to be referred to in Dutch by local SAs (the Dutch version of "Chanel number 5"), but for some reason 31RC seems to beg for a French pronunciation, which leads to some interesting stammering.

There is an instruction video around on YT for the correct pronunciation of L'Occitane, made by the brand, it's cute!

sometimes google translate will have a speaker icon in the lower left hand corner that you can press to hear how something is pronounced, but it is not always correct

you can hear it when you type in "chergui"

Does Gieffeffe count? Because unless you get what they’re doing (GFF spelled out), it’s awkward to try to say. Anyway, that’s what I’m wearing.

    Other notable names:

-Un Jardin Sur Le Nil is a mouthful.

-Sira des Indes has some pronunciation surprises.

But both of those are hot day perfumes.
My only regrets in life are the people I haven't stood up for,
and the perfumes I've thrown away.

@ foxie : I like the way this scent is slightly different each time, and between wearers - I can see how you might get a resemblance to Hyde and LADDM, but on my skin all three wear differently : Io Non Ho is resins, woods, tobacco, germolene (wintergreen), and cinnamon; Hyde is burning leather with underlying floral mildness; LADDM is dry, spiced amber/vanilla.
February theme : wax, dust, powder, and resins . FBs : Piguet Casbah; CdG Avignon, Etro Heliotrope; Etro Ambra; Lalique Encre Noire . Samples : Anatole Lebreton Grimoire; Tauer LADDM/ACDD; Tom Daxon Iridium; Papillon Angelique; Dior DHI; Unum LAVS, Io Non Ho Mani; Penhaligon's Sartorial; Knize Forest; Piguet Futur; Molinard Habanita

Perfume Porn and most provocative - for me I would consider a bottle that has animalistic qualities - musk, civet, castoreum. A powerhouse from the 1980s/90s could be one option, another would be something sweet and musky/skanky. I got a little time to think about it.

l think either of these would fit.

l'll be working on Friday, so l'll need to give this some thought. l wouldn't feel comfortable wearing something that might offend...

I don't have very provocative fragrances.
My most provocative are probably dirty-musky-dusty Agent Provocateur (hey, that's in a name!), Narciso Rouge (it's probably very subjective, but all NRs seem quite clean to me, while Rouge's musk is actually quite dirty on my skin), For Her L'Absolu (I can't explain it, but it's very, very sexy to me) and Shalimar.

I also work on Friday, so I guess it should be either very light dabs (AP and Rouge are minis, so that's possible), or something else in the morning (could be half provocative, as Black Opium, Opium, or Le baiser du Dragon, or something masculine) and then a follow up of something from the list in the evening.

One could see wearing something quite loud or unexpected (such as an ultramasculine on a woman or an ultrafeminine on a man who usually don't cross-spray, something juvenile-ishly sweet, sugary and fruity on a mature person or a vintage classic on a teen) as also provocative, too.

Wasn't "perfume porn" part of the original mission statement on this? (Just looked above - YES!)

I regard "perfume porn" as visual lust-stokers like fancy bottle, rare item, old vintage, big volume, new release, sexy model, provocative or inspiring advert, etc. It needs either a good picture or a lusty story. Like - well - porn!

Doing the vintage swap sync, I don't necessarily get to do Fridays, but if I join in, I might do either Eau d'Hermes or Jardin du Nil. (Or, if I go the phallic bottle route, Pierre Cardin pour Monsieur.)

    Yay!
I'll be waiting for your impressions and reviews!
I have tried and have 3 minis from the line - original AP, Lace Noir and Blue Silk. I find them difficult to me and amusingly addictive at the same time. Lace Noir is easiest to like for me, as that's a spicy oriental and the cleanest of the three. Blue Silk seduces me with the evergreen notes, but chokes me out easily later, and the original one is a dusty and musky dirty floral with hidden spices beneath, it reminds me of scents from the old times. I can't say I actually like them, but they're so interesting I still want to keep them.

I have also been missing out on these syncs due to the vintage pass, but if I sync this Friday, I think Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur's boobleheaded phallus is about as good as it gets from my collection.

How would Jardin du Nil be provocative in terms of either bottle or scent?

Certainly not bottle. I haven't worn it yet (a plus for syncs), but it has a reputation for an unusual and divisive skank. That strikes me as provocative, even if not porn-provocative.

Interesting, now I want to sniff it again, as it's been quite some time. I always thought if of it as a nice unique green-mango affair, but there's certainly more going on under the hood that I don't recall vividly anymore. And I suppose mango itself can smell a bit "sweaty".

I think you summed up it pretty well, it's very retro and animalic. It's too much for me too, but it was also fascinating to me in some way.

Well...I look at this as an opportunity for a creative project. So I’ll definitely be providing a visual to go along with the olfactory component. I’m thinking in terms of a glamour shot of my perfume bottle which ever scent I pick, be it provocative in scent or container. Tasteful, of course. Not looking to get banned.
