Default Dior Sauvage Tops All Men's Fragrance Sales In UK This Christmas Season

I ran across a somewhat interesting article from the Daily Mail UK:

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/a...favourite.html

In it they list the top 10 ranked by total sales from October to December this year. I can't believe in this time span Dior have sold 554,400 Bottles of Sauvage. I'm also surprised that Only The Brave is anywhere on this list.

    Here's the list:

Top 10 Men’s Fragrances in UK by Sales Christmas 2019 (October to December)

    1. Dior Sauvage £34.5m, 554,400 bottles
    2. Paco Rabanne 1 Million £12.5m, 261,400 bottles
    3. Chanel Bleu de Chanel £11.6m, 180,300 bottles
    4. Creed Aventus £10.25m, 48,400 bottles
    5. Hugo Boss Hugo Boss £8.25m, 190,200 bottles
    6. Paco Rabanne Invictus £5.42m, 108,700 bottles
    7. Diesel Only The Brave £5.3m, 145,100 bottles
    8. JPG Le Male £5.16m, 112,400 bottles
    9. Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Homme £4.38m, 113,600 bottles
    10. Dolce & Gabbana K £4.2m, 76,000 bottles

No surprise I dislike all of them, finding nearly all horrific smelling. That said, based on current mainstream perfume preferences the list is about what one would expect...
    Current Top Ten:
    1) Portrait of a Lady original formula (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    2) Giorgio V.I.P. for Men (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    4) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    5)
Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)
    6) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    7) Javanese Patchouli (Zegna) - tie
    7) Monsieur de Givenchy vintage (Givenchy) - tie
    7) Coeur de Vetiver Sacré (L'Artisan) - tie
    7) Polo vintage (Ralph Lauren) - tie

    I'm not sure about this.
The Mail , particularly the online version is an appalling publication.
They've got Johnny Dep's age wrong by ten years and described all the scents as aftershaves.
Having said that Sauvage is clearly the "must have " scent for the majority as far as I can see.
Surprised to see Aventus in the top 10 though this is based on the amount of cash paid for it rather than units sold ( which would have put it way down the list )

Dior has spent tons of money to promote sauvage and it's worked. People really like it.
it's a pleasant fragrance which kind of copies bleu, another hugely successful fragrance.
These are all nice fragrances except for the awful invictus but i think that list is really boring.
Le male and the issey miyake are as common as household cleaning products and you would think that people would try something different after all these years. Having said that i still love le male and gaultier hit the jackpot with that one.

I find this list somewhat suprising. 1 million number 2? Le Male, not Ulra Male? No AdG? I dont know.

Daily Mail is probably not the best source of news, or anything for that matter!! Its a paper that has headlines that start with "foreigners... x y z..."

Not surprised by Sauvage selling lots.

I don't know about that list. The fact that Aventus is listed at number 4 yet it had the least bottles sold from that list.Sauvage however is not surprising with its very big advertising campaign.

The article also seems like an advertisement in a way because they are linking each fragrance to a place you can buy it.A real list should not do that.Accurate or not, in general I don't trust these internet lists.

The list is pretty much in line with what I am smelling on the streets. Aside from Aventus they are all very widely distributed which obviously correlates with overall sales.

It also seems that for many buyers a gimmicky bottle (Invictus, 1 million, otb) is a major selling point. Then there are the classics that people keep coming back to (Issey, le male, bottled), then the heavily advertised prestige brands (bleu, Sauvage). I am also finding a surprising number of (unlikely) people with knowledge of Creed - even hearing references in UK urban music.

In sum, not surprised by that list

1 Million, and also the Issey, are easily and cheaply available in discount/bargain bin stores throughout the UK, in small towns as well as cities. Various Diesel and Boss frags too.
The rest (apart from Aventus) can be bought from Boots, the drugstore/chemist on every high street.
January to Candlemas - cold, pale and dark : CdG Zagorsk; PradaInfusion d'Iris; L.T Piver Heliotrope Blanc; Etro Heliotrope and Vetiver; Gucci Guilty Absolute pH; Jacomo Jacomo de Jacomo; Lalique Encre Noire.

Yes, I smell Aventus (or some of the clones) a lot in Munich. It's equal in popularity like Sauvage.
In the past I've seen a GC analysis of Aventus and Sauvage done by a chemist who basically said that they share a lot of similarities. In other words - Sauvage seems to be a designerish take from Dior on Aventus.
But Sauvage is much more appreciated by the ladies than Aventus - that was shown by many blind tests (also on the streets) done by Youtubers all over the world. So no surprise, that it easily exceeds Aventus (aside the price difference).

Not surprised either. 1 Million was a huge hit and I’m sure many of those purchases came from repeat customers. Same goes for Le Male and L’Eau d’Issey. The list may look a little different by country though.

I don't normally think of marketing and volume of sales. Looking at those numbers is mind boggling.
48400 bottles of Aventus. In Canadian dollars that translates to 26.6 million at 550.00 per bottle.
To think Savage at half a million bottles, I can't comprehend.
OP, thanks for this information, absolutely fascinating.

It would be interesting to see that in comparison to other regions/countries. Most of them look like it would be the same.

I'm not surprised by most of that list, even if it's a thinly-disguised piece of PR for Escentual. Listing them that way was a clever way to get Aventus in there; wonder if Esscentual are looking to become authorised sellers of the brand

The article is littered with mistakes though, as noted above. My favourite is "Ninth favourite is 1994's Issey Miyake L'eau d'Issey Homme....The cologne was introduced ten years ago". And who knew that Sauvage was a "re-launch of the old 1966 Eau Sauvage classic", eh?

Pretty much my thoughts as well. Sauvage is popular in just about every country I’ve set foot in this past year or so (and there have been a few!).

I’m not surprised to be honest by how much they make - but I really like how ION-ONE broke them down into categories - and I agree with the break down as well. I also don’t smell Aventus very much these days.

I should add they got all the perfumes wrong - for Sauvage, they show the EdP and state it was released in 2015 which is wrong as we all know that was the year the EdT came out. Same for BdC. They showed the picture of the Parfum which was actually a 2018 release.
