    Default What is your worst used fragrance purchase experience?

    Today I received a used bottle of TF Tobacco Vanille that arrived wrapped in an envelope that was filled with what appeared to be the dusty contents of a use vacuum bag. The bottle itself was covered in grime and soggy, greasy fingerprints. Really makes me think twice about purchasing from a random eBay seller again.

    My negative feedback left him with a rating of 90.9%, down from 100%. I later realised that he had of the 82 ratings he had, only 3 were from purchasers, the rest were from sellers. One purchaser commented that a jumper he received was stained. I should have read more into that.

    Easy- a fake bottle of Portrait of a Lady. The worst part about it was it took me months to realize it was a fake. I rarely wore it and always thought the juice was weak... one day I pulled it out and compared it to a bottle of Musc Ravageur I have and I started to see how bad the bottle quality, label quality and cap quality was on the POAL bottle. Live and learn I suppose...

    Watered down juice in a splash vintage RL Polo I won in an eBay auction for $10. I’d have been pissed had I paid a lot more. But it taught me a lesson more valuable than the $10: never buy or bid on splash bottles.

    These instances above sound like absolute nightmares. Glad I have never thought to purchase a used fragrance.

    I never had an issue with a used fragrance, and a large chunk of my collection has been purchased off eBay, especially in the early days when I didn't have money. As OP said, it's really important to pay attention to whether the feedback is given to the seller for purchases or sold items.

    The only situation I had where I had to return a bottle was when a seller unknowingly sold me a factice. He took it back without issue and I the money was returned.

    Both bad experiences for me are with vintage bottles: Polo RL and Epic Man.

    They were both badly off and smelled nothing like the current stuff, let alone the vintage juice. Luckily got my dosh back in both cases.

    You can't always trust the feedback, though. I've seen positive feedback for fake bottles on ebay. I'm not sure if the buyer can't tell it's fake or if it's a fake sale to boost the sellers rating but the bottle was definitely fake.

    As for worst experience; probably Ho Hang. The bottle leaked when it was sprayed. I contacted the seller. He sent me another bottle and told me I could keep the bottle with the faulty, leaking sprayer. The replacement bottle had the exact same problem. I've had to decant the liquid into another bottle. A lot of the juice would've been wasted if I didn't.

    I once received a bottle of Ombré Leather that was filled with water. Not watered down, but filled with just water. Sprayed on skin, it gave just the faintest impression of the fragrance that once graced the bottle and a musty mildew accord.

    Agreed. Hence caveat emptor - buyer beware and all that. Trust your gut - if something is too good to be true, it likely is.

    I enjoy a good cautionary tale, but this thread is making me not want to go to ebay any time in the near future. I've only purchased used twice and both were good experiences.

    As with others, there's the occasional vintage diluted with something else. Luckily not too often.
    But probably the worse case was a Schiaparelli Shocking torso shipped as is (ie with the glass torso inside the glass cover. With obvious results. The envelope where all the liquid had spilled was used to perfume my closet for months.

    I have had generally very good eBay experiences, even with vintage scents.

    My one really bad purchase came from Etsy and was a 2 oz. vintage bottle of L'Heure Bleue. I paid a ridiculous amount for the thing and when it arrived even the outer packaging smelled horribly pungent. The perfume had turned badly and the entire thing smelled like a very mothball-y version of nail polish remover. I had to fight tooth-and-nail to get my money back (and tellingly, the seller didn't want me to return the still-full bottle to her.)

    I've bought several fakes over the years. After the first time spraying whatever the hell was in the bottle on my skin I started testing eBay buys on paper first.

    So far, luckily none.

    The few times did buy used fragrances, the fill levels were close to maximum and the seller fortunately reliable, the quality of respective fragrances did turn out ok.

    Would perhaps never or only rarely try to repeat this again yet around the beginnings of this hobby, not particularly and not only the affordable cost factor were a main argument to try this, as much as a sense of trying something that seemed more adventurous and less common back than (maybe not so much now).

    Here's an example of positive feedback for fake bottles. This seller is selling fakes;
    Screenshot_20191204-222037_eBay.jpg

    When you click on the feedback, it takes you to the item they bought. Click on the one that's second from the top and it shows you the positive feedback was left for this;
    Screenshot_20191204-222046_eBay.jpg

    It's completely, 100% fake. How did the buyer not know? Is the fake bottle filled with a convincing replica or is the seller just leaving feedback for himself? We'll never know. Here's more pictures of this fake bottle.

    Here's another seller who is receiving positive feedback for fake bottles;
    Screenshot_20191204-230742_eBay.jpg

    And here's some of the fake bottles that people have left positive feedback for;

    Yep, as crazy as it is, it appears that there's people who are buying this crap and they can't tell they've bought a fake. Don't always trust the feedback.

    I've had very good experiences with eBay, though I did have an odd case of receiving a decant of a fragrance that turned out to not be the actual fragrance (I found this out when I got an actual bottle of it).

    As far as I know, I’ve never been burned in an eBay vintage frag transaction. I say “as far as I know” because in most cases I haven’t any way to be sure apart from the scents matching descriptions I’ve read and the absence of telltale signs of fakery. (Blind buying accounts for positive reviews of fake frags in general, which is why I only look at negative reviews when judging sellers: multiple credible accusations of fakery rule out my business.) The only time I ever got what I presumed to be a fake was buying a new bottle of TF Tobacco Oud that didn’t smell anything like the in-store testers. I got a full and prompt refund for that.

    Several busted sprays that I fixed (I'm good at that), and one depressurized bottle of French Line I had to end up decanting.

    I had many more terrible experiences as a seller than I've ever had as a buyer. So many eBay shoppers are just flat-out nutjobs.

    Fake Creed Silver Mountain Water long ago. It smelled like someone dumped some SMW into old, dirty dishwater. The seller was (or acted) as surprised as me and blamed their supplier. Who knows. Return accepted and got a legit bottle.

    That is my only negative experience as a buyer, ever.

    I briefly sold decants, too, and those buyers were no drama. Lucky, it appears.

    Actually from a physical store that sold a box of Hindu Grass they sealed themselves. As the box was just opened days latter far away....The bottle was leaking. It was also lacking the travel cap. Name: Profumeria Castelli in Rome. Never answered me. Sold an used defective bottle as a new one to a dumb tourist.

    I barely bought used bottles, but once saw almost empty bottle of Opium for men at local FB fragrance group and decided to give it a go. It had a very low res photo, but it looked like there's around 15ml left. I was shocked when I received it - turned out to be an aftershave instead of EdT. Seller didn't write a thing about it being aftershave and told me that I should have looked at photos. It was very low res photo and not visible what the hell it says on a bottle.
