Default Can you find the hidden unicorn?

See if you can spot the reason this rather shabby collection of miniatures sold for over $340 USD:

Ooh that is a steal. That mini alone would have been over $500 iirc

    Unsniffed?

I wouldn't have had any confidence in it. The whole collection looks badly stored (and mostly evaporated).

Yep-as cook.bot was saying. If in perfect condition, these would be real gems. But one has to account for the (substantial risk). so the buyer is a wealthy collector who is willing to bear the risk.

Incidentally, I'm curious about the real nature of Iris gris. Recently, Luca Turin suggested that the old thing wasn't what it was supposed to be-ie the formula actually used wasn't the rich one of the osmotheque. Who knows. perhaps it was originally then it changed, perhaps there was a parfum and an eau.

I don't find myself drooling over this collection, despite the unicorn - those gems don't look like they've been given the respect they deserve, I'll bet half of them have gone off.

The one that most caught my eye was the "Si" by Schiaparelli, a real rarity. Its original parfum bottle was apparently a tiny Chianti bottle, sealed with red wax.

But check this out -- it came in a formulation called a "Chloro-Cologne" ! Talk about a knockout....

    I'd be curious about a chloro-cologne too!

I hadn't known about the flask bottle of Si'-Schiaparelli certainly had a knack for bottle as well.

Apparently it was infused with chlorophyll, not chloroform. Much less 'shocking'. I didn't read quite deeply enough.

    Thanks for the juicy pics!

Evidently the material du jour existed even then... chlorophyll is probably due for a comeback in skincare soon.

Also, noticing the add that described the shockingly animalic shocking as "loveliness or really clean skin".

Might not recognize everything, apart from some vintage Dior, Fath and Schiaparelli bottles, but if genuine and the retailer trustworthy, a definitely affordable and decent value price for such impressive vintage haul

Might be a hard sell, since it's now so strongly associated with breath mints and chewing gum. It does have the ability to impart a real sense of "coolness" to the skin, though.

Yeah, that's pretty amusing. The 'really clean skin' of a wild beast, maybe.

I think they were co-promotions, in an attempt to sell actress Juliette Greco as a singer. I thought her name rang a faint bell with me, but I guess I only know her from her associations with famous men, as this article in the Guardian illustrates:

"Miles Davis[, playing in Paris with Dizzy Gillespie, fell madly in love with her. "Sartre asked Miles why we didn't get married, but Miles loved me too much, he said, to marry me. You'd be seen as a 'negro's whore' in the US, he told me, and this would destroy your career. We saw each other regularly until his death. He was one of the most elegant men I have known."

If chlorophyll cools the skin, then it probably means it's highly irritating and shouldn't be in skincare. Which of course wouldn't prevent skincare companies in using it for marketing purposes (as they do for many other irritants).

As for Juliette Greco, she was a really big name in France, more as a singer than an actor. She didn't go international as much as other singers, so that's why probably she's known in France (and countries like Italy) but not elsewhere. So I guess the co-promotion part was for foreign markets (where Schiaparelli was a big name).

I doubt she's making it up, but there were numerous other women Miles saw regularly (or irregularly) until his death, which might be an additional reason he didn't marry Juliette Greco.

Pretty useful way to wiggle out of a marriage commitment, too, while still making yourself look all noble and altruistic and sh*t.

There are books written about collecting minis. It's not just about the juice. The Je Reviens could be an R Lalique bottle. And miniature Schiaparelli bottles are very collectible. I sold an empty Zut! mini without the box for over $200. It wouldn't surprise me if that one is even rarer and with the box would be quite valuable. Factor in the Iris Gris the Guerlains and all the rest of the stuff and $340 doesn't seem like all that much.
