Default People that wear cologne and no deodorant

Iíve worked with several of these chaps throughout the years. I think itís a cultural thing. They smell good in AM, but after work sweat later in day the cologne is mostly gone and BO (body odor, not black orchid) takes over.

Iíve never had the courage to tell these coworkers about hygiene and use of deodorant. Itís not my place and would be awkward to discuss. Not my style to confront them. But I wish I had done more to help them.

Anyone else experience this? I am not posting in a judgmental way, itís something Iíve encountered.

I went for quite a while without using deodorant - but I didn't smell, because I used a super strong antiperspirant. Basically no sweat = no bad odor.

Bring it up in another manner to them, "What deodorant do you use?". Maybe it'll click for them.

Now I don't use that strong antiperspirant anymore, I've switched to a Primal Pit Paste product(s) that are freaking awesome. Baking soda is a big part of the makeup.

A guy at work sweats a lot and maybe or maybe doesn’t wear deodorant smells like BO, fragrance won’t cover it up just blends with it and doesn’t make the BO any less pleasant. I would never consider it as I would likely offend others with nasty BO, no thanks!

In addition to the potential cultural element identified, Iíve also noticed that some of the worst offenders a) donít wash their clothes between uses and b) donít wear undershirts. Combining those two elements is a recipe for eau de swamp.

I have a coworker that has bad BO. Don't get caught walking behind him in the hallway. You'll gag. I don't see any point in wearing cologne but no deodorant. If anything, deodorant or antiperspirant comes first, with or without cologne.

Not only have never worn fragrance without prior application of no deodorant, but luckily either only knew people who never used fragrance without antiperspirant or deodorant prior applied or, in an unlikely bout of luck, at least people who (blessed by skin chemistry, health situation etc.) did at the very least need little or no application of deodorant in the first place, even if this may sound absurd and/or scientifically impossible, simultaneously with fragrance use

Speaking of cultural differences... in my experience, not changing clothes daily and not showering regularly is more of a culprit than just sweat. Plus, if you search for fragrance online every other article on the "interwebs" will duly mention that since 16th century perfume's primary function has been to mask body odours , so many folks take that as a panacea.

I assume that deodorant is used here as a catch all that also includes antiperspirant.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.

There are a few people who just react poorly to certain deodorants/antiperspirants. It took me quite a while to find deodorants/antiperspirants that worked for me. Those that did not work, either caused rashes (= itching/pain = more sweating), or did not work, or smelled bad, or left a messy goo on my skin that would not dry. It took a considerable amount of time (and not everybody has much free time these days) to experiment with various products before I found a solution that actually worked.

But I am guessing that of those that do not use deodorants/antiperspirants, only 10% or less have skin conditions that prevent them from using those products.

You can do one of three things,
    a. Try ignore the smell, and just put up with it, or
    b. Have a quiet word with them, explain that they may have not noticed their BO and that it may wind up being a handicap to their career advancement, or
    c. Especially if they are the type that only wash/put fresh clothes on for job interviews, tell them loudly that they stink and smell disgusting and to shove their culture, that we are now living in the civilised world.

The latter is particularly useful as they may avoid you - since you will carp at them at every opportunity- and hence you won't have to put up with their smell so much.
    Regards,
    Renato

P.S Also, maybe the problem is that they are using pure deodorant sticks or sprays, as they only stop the breakdown of bacteria which leads to the bad smell for about four hours or so. Antiperspirant deodorants last a lot longer.

    Yikes.

Yeah, fragrances don't cover up a lack of deodorant/antiperspirant/shower.

However, some people seek out fragrances that smell like feces, so I suppose at that point, any other deficiencies in grooming/hygiene are a bit irrelevant.

Yeah... I don't any real experience with vintage animalics, but indolic jasmine done right isn't brutally fecal on most people. It mostly gives a hint of "booty sweat" or possibly a hint of bad breath, which is more intriguing than alarming IMO.

Also much preferable to some serious pit stank.

If I have a stick that is aligned with a scent I may use it. Otherwise spritz to the pit proves sufficient. Then again I shower daily in the summer and every second day in winter whether I need it or not..
I happen to like my body odor and a little perfume decay and BO on the girls perks my interest.

It's so nice to know that some people still subscribe to the Napoleonic school of hygiene.

I personally love the smell of decayed perfume on a man a day or so post-bathing. Of course, it has to be the right man.

It's a very unlikely scenario and I'm sure I've came across a few here and there but it's usually with both cologne and deodorant or neither. Regardless of wearing deodorant, cologne can't be used as a substitute.

Use your discretion in how to proceed. If it really is bothersome, then escalate to management. Emphasize the BO and hygiene aspect; don't call attention to perfume use as that may be caught in the crossfire.

I've had a few situations in a professional environment of this kind (however, all BO and no perfume to cover up), but it never got out of hand. As mentioned, usually it comes hand-in-hand with less frequent showering and/or reuse of clothing.

In the Peanuts cartoons, I always thought it was nice that Pig Pen was accepted and a friend of the group, despite the fact that he reeked so bad that he had a literal cloud around him. So it's nice to see Basenotes acting the same to our own 'Pig Pens'.

I don't wear deodorant unless I'm going to the gym normally. A little natural musk + perfume isn't a bad thing. Don't confuse musk here with BO either, there is a big difference!

What I smell at work is more than just a little natural mask. It is room filling offensive body odor

A bit off topic but: strong smelling deodorant can really mess with the smell of a nice cologne/perfume. Arm & Hammer unscented antiperspirant with baking soda is great!
