Default What do I get? Fragrance beginner

Hello all. I am relatively new to the fragrance game, but have been watching some youtube videos so I know a little about what is good and popular. I am a younger guy with a tight budget ($30 or less), and have only one fragrance (Versace Dylan Blue). If I were to get another fragrance, which one would be best? I have looked at Afnan Supremacy Silver, Davidoff Cool Water, Nautica Voyage, and Perry Ellis 360 Red, but I'm definitely open to anything else in this price range. There's just so much information out there I'm not sure what to get haha. Thanks!

Welcome, I blind bought Nautica and 360, Nautica is super cheap but limited longevity 360 was the better choice of the two imo, your right it is a load to take in..the choices are really daunting... if you can't sample take a punt on one after doing your homework on here or fragrantica and the like.. in essence go with your gut and enjoy the ride..

You might be able to get Coach Cologne. Bentley (Intense) is always praised. One of the Lalique Encre Noirs, but they are bit more challenging

In that budget range, one of the best things is cK Shock. The most shocking thing about it is how good it is for the price. Also: Encre Noir a L'Extreme.

Thanks for the recommendations, but the majority of them I can't find in my local stores. How would I go about trying them to see if I actually like them before I pull the trigger?

Welcome! I would add L'Eau D'issey Pour Homme by Issey Miyake. You can find this at many retail discount stores at affordable prices.

Perhaps order samples that might be available online for those that seem interesting to you.

I have a TJ Maxx and a Ross close by, but a little farther away I have Nordstrom and Macy's, but they don't carry things like Lalique, Nautica, Perry Ellis, etc.

For 30 bucks or less, you should be happy with:

    John Varvatos Vintage
    John Varvatos Artisan Pure
    CK One Shock
    Montblanc Legend
    Michael Kors for Men
    Hugo Man by Hugo Boss

Those can all be easily found for 30 or less.

L'Erboralio Meharees for the cooler months.
Encre Noir Sport for the warmer months.

Lalique and Guerlain both have some very nice scents that are very affordable. Vetiver, Hommage A L'Homme, White etc..

It seems like a lot of you are recommending the Lalique Encre Noire line. What fragrances that are common in department stores smell like these? Just so I can get a good sense of what they are before buying.

Encre Noir is excellent, but note that the entire line is based on the note of vetiver. If you haven't smelled vetiver before, think of scents that are earthy, green/vegetal and perhaps a hint smoky. If that sounds appealing, then this could be your cup of tea. Encre Noir translates to "Black Ink" to give you an idea of the aesthetic being evoked.

Personally, if you're unsure of the kind of scents I described, I'd suggest building your collection a little more before going in that direction. To me, something vetiver forward is the olfactory equivalent of eating oysters - lots of people love it because it's fantastic, but it's can be foreboding to a newcomer.

I personally think that Guerlain Vetiver is a bit more welcoming to a newcomer, but if the earthy vibe doesn't sit well with you there are better choices.

There have been a lot of really great suggestions above. I'll give you notes on a few that I had luck with to perhaps give some guidance, but a lot should be available for sample in store or online:

Montblanc Legend: Super safe blind buy, very good all rounder. In the same way that Versace Dylan Blue is elevated shower gel, Legend is elevated Axe body spray - usable in almost any situation, almost impossible to dislike. The only hesitation might be that you have a very good all rounder already.

Montblanc Legend Spirit: Similar to legend, but this hints at the "blue fragrance" genre whilst using different aromachemicals. Uplifting, refreshing and versatile. Again, it's a take on the genre that Dylan Blue adheres to, it just veers away from the synthetic incense and leans in to pepper, synthetic "woods" and citrus.

Issey Miyake L'eau Dissey Pour Homme: If you live in a hot climate, this is a remarkably safe go to. Ozonic effervescent citrus, so sharply fresh it can singe off nostril hairs.

Paco Rabane Pour Homme: I have a bottle of this on order right now, so I'm very, very biased to it. Old school, gentlemanly barbershop aesthetic without feeling like grand dad's scent. If you'd like to feel dapper, fresh and soapy with a whiff of tobacco and honeyed musk, this is just gorgeous.

John Varvatos Artisan (plus many flankers): Almost all are great and wonderfully priced, but you'll need to delve into which one suits your personality and climate. Original Artisan or Artisan Pure are probably the two safest choices.

CK One Shock for Him: This leans toward the gourmand side of things (smelling edible), but comes with a very well rounded sweetness from lavender and tobacco. If you're in an early northern hemisphere winter, this is a super solid choice. Just ignore the shitty bottle.

Montblanc Individuel: Raspberry, woody, vanillic and floral. Sweet, but also uplifting and refreshing.

Montblanc Starwalker: Bamboo, ginger, woods and citrus... well rounded and super versatile (a recurring theme with Montblanc). Feels different to most scents becauase of the bamboo, but quite a people pleaser.

    One to delay purchasing...

Davidoff Cool Water: I would buy this later on. The grand daddy of all aquatics is very good, but every one of your forebears and mine has worn this since the days of fluoro skivvies, leopardskin lycra and Absolut martinis... so the fragrance DNA is very deeply ingrained in the public consciousness as being "dated." More useful as a reference point and occasional fun wear rather than a "daily driver."

Hope that helps with some of the qualitative stuff.

There have been a tonne of really good suggestions in this thread that I don't know as much about (Burberry, Rochas, Aramis, Van Cleef & Arpels, Hugo Boss... the entire Guerlain Range...the rest of the Lalique Range - White, Lion, Equus etc), so if none of the ones I've described seem right for you I'd defintiely encourage looking into those a bit more.
