I dunno either. I guess I'm going to be forced to buy a bottle of the "eau de" to find out. I did buy a bottle of the Eau de Metal and didn't like it at all.

The Fragrantica directory has separate entries for Calandre and Eau de Calandre (the BN directory does not), but I think they conflated them as they show both as being created in 1969, which is definitely not correct.

It was nice. It came off as an aromatic pine/herbal before drying down to a woody scent. I tried the Warner version.

Hated the first 60 seconds of super white floral. Now it’s quite lovely. Might need a bottle, but unsure if vintage or current is best. Guess I’ll need to get more samples (want to try the current edp just in case I like it, which would greatly simplify acquisition). I am a lover of real gardenias, and nothing really smells like that, but this is good. Marc Jacobs had a gardenia scent a few years back that I liked. Would be nice to compare them.

There was a bottle released by Guerlain called Gardenia that was released in the 1930s.

    Perfect. Thanks.
I remember there being a Guerlain Gardénia (some kind of angry or savage gardenia) that I intend to audition. Probably too sweet, but we shall see…

Glad you liked it! Yes, the Warner is really nice, has a warmth/roundness to it that I really dig. The early Cosmair seems almost ashier/more raw in comparison, amping up the dry aromatic tobacco in later versions. I swear I get a slight boozyness (for the lack of a better word) in the opening of both versions. Love that.

I really dig it and always have. It sometimes almost has this minty aspect to it that I really really like. I've yet to try the yellow-box version, though.. I think I liked the Splash-On/Brut 33 even more so, which I remember as more herbal/taragon'y fresh, but still with that unmistakable super strong Brut-DNA.

Thumbs up Re: Your Vintage SOTD - 2020

Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

I just read a quote from model Carol Royle, the face of Chanel No. 19 in the 1970s, who says that in her 20s she wore Brut after shave because other perfumes were sickly to her. If she thought that then.... imagine how she feels now.

I'll just stick with her professional recommendation for today. One of the few I can handle in August heat and humidity.

(Image swiped from Roro, from whom I also learned that the paper label and the tiny gap between the metal band and the glass bottle indicate that this bottle is pre-1989. See, Roro? I do sometimes remember things.)

I also have the current edt spray in the classic glassbottle w/ medallion that Unilever still makes (not the US cologne spray) and it's really good. I highly recommend it.

Never heard of her (but most likely have seen her face) but what an uber-cool move wearing Brut as a woman. I bet it smelled great on her!
Thx for the tip on N⁰19, I did not know that

Beautiful clean shot! And funny, though, this weekend I got an offer of buying 18ozs of vtg AV Ice Blue (the 9oz bottles on the photo), and it's terribly tempting!
