    Default Aaron Terence Hughes

I could not find a decent thread about this house on Basenotes despite its growing popularity so I thought I'd start one. What have you tried? What are your favourites?

I haven’t smelled any of these, or even heard of the brand, but looking at the web site I am in no rush to. Vegan this, vegan that... Generic looking bottles, another “self taught” perfumer and unimpressive product descriptors. Deal me out.
    Current Top Ten:
    1) Portrait of a Lady original formula (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    2) Giorgio V.I.P. for Men (Giorgio Beverly Hills) - tie
    4) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage) - tie
    4) Jasmin Antique (Rogue) - tie
    6)
Anat Fritz and its reissue, called Classical (Anat Fritz)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Javanese Patchouli (Zegna) - tie
    8) Monsieur de Givenchy vintage (Givenchy) - tie
    8) Polo vintage (Ralph Lauren) - tie

I've tried five and found them all forgettable. None were bad necessarily, but none were exactly good either. Several rely on big, blocky globs of synths (Santal, for example, hits you with a huge dose of woody-amber). Onyx reminded me of Moods by Krizia, but I found Moods to be more substantial and much better made (you can also find it for about $20 online these days). It seems to me that this is a brand aimed squarely at the influencer / youtube arena where, I predict, they'll be a big hit for short while.

I doubt Basenotes is going to give Aaron a real chance. Now I haven't tried any of his fragrances yet, but if you've seen him on YouTube, he knows his stuff. I don't know what you guys consider 'self-taught', but he has degrees in cosmetic science and chemistry.

I'll probably order Animalix when it's in stock again.
I like the idea of layering some of my favorite fragrances with it and give them a dirtier touch.

And here's a review of 4 ATH fragrances from Nikhil aka Exotic Scents:

I think he's opening up for orders on the 11th if my understanding of English date structure is correct.

Stumbled across his channel last night on youtube, pretty entertaiing stuff. I've enjoyed watching his reviews on frag mental's channel. His nose seems to be quite sensitive and accurate.

As far as his scents, I haven't had a chance to sniff them but based on his likes and dislikes, I don't think our preferences would line up well. He seems to prefer big, booming, dirty, animalistic stuff.

No chance to order the fragrances that got my interest.
They were literally sold out within minutes today.

But that's a good thing for Aaron.
People seem to really like his stuff and I'm looking forward to see where his journey goes.
And maybe one day I'll manage to be one of the early birds, too, to get my hands on his fragrances.

That's crazy. I forgot about this so I wasn't able to check his site. I only really want to try maybe two of them anyway.

I am curious about his dirtier fragrances like Slut, Animalix, Filth and FilthXXL.
Maybe I'll find someone who got full bottles and could send me small decants of them.

I tried to get 2 of the 10ML's, but unfortunately shipping to here was 35€, so I decided not to for now. I still hope to try some

Yes, shipping to me would have been 35 €, too. So not worth when only ordering one bottle.
Have you seen his latest video?
He said that shipping is only 10 £ or € to most EU countries iirc, but that's not the case.

yeah, just saw that, he said 10-20 pounds, but it's 30 pounds to most I guess. I think he's selling the 10MLs at a reasonable price and I think it's a great size for trying them out, but as you said, with shipping it's just too much unfortunately. Maybe once his stock doesn't go out this fast I can do a bundled order with some people in The Netherlands

That's a good idea to do a bundled order then.

I would have paid 35 € for shipping if he had more than one of the fragrances in stock which I wanted to buy.

I'm not sure if he offered the 10 ml samples for each fragrance.

This is weird. As if he has never smelled GTI or Aventus before? Criticises companies for going after profit, then increases his prices the next day.

I'm gonna go ahead an assume nearly all fragrances out there are vegan. I bet Adidas Moves is vegan. I bet the only ones that aren't are the ultra expensive ALDs and Bortnikoffs and such. So his gimmick is "Hey, buy my eggs! They are white!" or "Pay a premium for my lettuce. It's fat free!"
It’s tragic to think that heroic man’s great destiny is to become economic man, that men will be reduced to craven creatures who crawl across the globe competing for money, who spend their nights dreaming up new ways to swindle each other.

I noticed this yesterday. I think it's because he is planning to invest more in design. His designs are pretty basic, so no wonder why.

I've watched some videos of Aaron, and he seems like a passionate and interesting guy. I haven't smelled any of his work, though.

And from what I've heard him say, his "vegan" claims are based on his lack of animal product use (deer musk, castoreum etc.), especially those that have been traditionally known to incur the mistreatment of animals. He is not a vegan himself. He is reformulating several in his line to include real ambergris (I I think ethically sourced), and so they will be losing the vegan cert.

He claims to use large amounts of naturals, including real oud, rose oil, vanilla tincture, sandalwood, and others.

As far as the simple packaging, come on guys, be fair. It's a startup house, and the use of simple packaging is to be expected.

Again, I haven't smelled a thing from him, so I'm not supporting nor criticizing him. I'm just relaying things he's communicated on his YouTube channel.

I like Aaron's passion and what he stands for. Guy is very entertaining to watch and I'd love to sit down with him and talk about fragrance, life, and whatever else comes up. He seems very cool and interesting. However, he does seem to contradict himself at times. Maybe it's because he's very careful with what he says, and then other times he will remove the filter and speak his mind. I can see how being in the public light can do that. He will say he hasn't smelled any modern fragrances because he's been so involved with his own creations... but then he will go and smell Aventus and get angry because he says he knows the fragrance and knows it's been rehashed over and over again. I understand the anger. It's appalling that the Sauvage's, Carbon's, and Explorer's exist to recreate the Aventus vibe (and countless niche clones). It takes away from creativity in the industry. But still... just own that you've smelled modern perfumes....

As far as the Vegan stuff, good for him. Some people see that word, get triggered, and think: "Self righteous hippy with dreads, eating hay whilst harnessing crystal energy, telling others how to live their life". The guy just seems like a caring individual who doesn't wanna to support the cruelty of animals in the beauty industry. So yeah, good for him. He is open about using synthetics and wouldn't use the word "vegan" to mask that fact. Anyone who has followed him will know that.

I just wish I could sample his stuff but the site does not ship to Canada or US. Maybe one day he will get proper distribution in North America.

Regardless, hope Aaron does well and is very successful with all he does. I'd like to see some passion injected into this industry, and this guys has that.

I was surprised, too, when I watched the Creed video Chris did with Aaron.
Aaron knows Aventus, at least he said it in his Explorer review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lnG8DiIN0k

I'm really curious seeing first reviews from "normal" customers.

Yeah, I've seen the video thumbnails popping up on YouTube of this guy lately.. I watched a little. I'm not impressed I hope he is successful, but have no interest in his line.

He seems to have very little knowledge about the perfume industry in general as I found an article about him in which he was asked:

    https://www.thelondonmanblog.com/pos...-his-creations

    WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PERFUMERS

    He answers:

"I love Clive Christian as a perfumer. His range is one that if I didn’t make my own I would buy. I like that he is independent and British."

As if Clive was the perfumer.. Not to mention this article was written after the company was sold..

    He goes on to say:

"Maison Francis Kurkdijan makes beautiful perfumes. I enjoy his work and love to go and sample what he has created. Again if I didn’t use my own I would buy his. His are clearly like a piece of art."

My guess is he also thinks that Maison is the first name of Francis Kurkdijan.
