Default How much should you spend on my fragrance collection?

Hello everyone, Zhang Fan here with another question. I'm sorry if this is too personal, but I would like to know what you think people should spend on fragrances compared to their salary. It could be what you spend, or what you think is reasonable. Thank you!

My view is that perfume goes in the luxury category-that is, if one is deciding whether to buy a perfume, or a necessity or invest in an IRA or the like, then the choice should not be the perfume. If one has enough to cover necessities and is saving enough for retirement, it's a matter of taste. A perfume, fancy clothes, a handbag? That's personal preference.

Hard to put down a number because it depends on many variables such as tax rate, pension and health insurance systems, and so on.

Buy what you enjoy and can afford, save up for what you truly want and enjoy it. You live once and there are far worse addictions or interests (hobbies).

I don't budget for fragrances. If it helps, I spent approximately 1.25% of my salary last year. I'm guessing I'll spend 0.05% or less this year because I am pretty content with my wardrobe right now.

Everyone is different and it will depend on each person's personal situation. For me, cost is not an issue.

Whatever you want. As long as you're not swimming in debt or having to make sacrifices, then you can spend as much or as little as you want.

I'm well aware of the fact that my fragrance collection is not even close to being in proportion with my clothing wardrobe or watch collection, and that's cool. I just happen to really like fragrances. At one point I really liked ties. I don't feel like there needs to be balance in that regard, especially if there's one particular thing which you're crazy about. Then go as crazy as you want.

It's when you start having to take out loans and your kid doesn't get the jungle gym she's wanted so bad because you spent the money on perfume when things become a problem. Until then..rock on.

i read that umar ibn al khattaab said something along the lines of: it wouldnt be excessive if a person was to spend a third of his wealth on perfume.

but i am not sure if that statement is authentically attributed to him

Entirely subjective and will vastly differ from person to person.

This is one of the "cheaper" avenues of things to hobby/and enjoy...

Compare to: cars, watches, sneakers, and fragrance could be the "cheaper" hobby.

It would definitely benefit me if I actually tracked my spending and how much I can allow for spending. It would probably prevent overspending and/or purchasing bottles I don't really need right away and should wait on.

From what I've remembered of your posts Zhang, you have a partner, so my answer would lean towards spending whatever keeps the peace at the dinner table There's always a little creative negotiation there, so just be ready for some give and take.

Not knowing the dynamics of your relationship, if you and your partner spend independantly and don't have a joint account (or keep your "play money" in seperate accounts), then just use your best discretion.

This hobby is always luxury spending, but so is most peoples activity these days. If you can pay your bills, don't sweat it.

not too much. you'll always wanna buy more. you can spend 10,000$ on fragrance and still never receive compliments (if thats what your after). Buy what you can afford, and if you smell a niche/expensive one you really want, buy it when you can afford it. Like most things it would be good to set aside a certain budget/percentage of your salary for it. Anything over 1-5% is probably a really dumb idea financially.

On your fragrance collection i wouldn't spent a dime. (Please don't get it personal, we talk about fragrances and it happens to have a totally different taste).
There is only one rule: Buy only if you can afford it and buy for your own satisfaction not the satisfaction of others.
Once you have thought about the money you have spent on a bottle or you have to hide it away from your wife's eyes you know you have been way over your budget.

What people choose to do with their money is none of my business. Personally I’d spent way beyond what an average person would so I’m really not the best person to ask about what is ‘reasonable’ amount to spend on a fragrance collection.

I chose to go down this route in my last buying expedition and it came to much more than I would normally spend on fragrances in a month.

I haven't bought any new fragrances for a few months now -- I think you have to give it a rest sometimes

My perfume-buying days are pretty much over, but in the past I spent much more on perfume than clothes, shoes, etc. Always make sure you pay your bills first, and try to maintain a cushion in your bank account for emergencies - that's the only formula I've ever come up with.

You’re asking how much WE should spend on YOUR fragrance collection?! Sorry, I’ve spent enough on my own collection....no funds left to spend on yours.

When you start running out of room to comfortably store them, that's probably a sign that you should become more selective.

You should enjoy yourself at least once a year I think. Huge collections turn me off--no curation, no personality. Owning perfume you never wear is sad. No more than two bottles. Always being on the hunt for something better is tiring.

I would rather enjoy my one bottle of perfume going out more often and living my life than amass an inventory the size of a department store. I hate collecting anything as well as any kind of clutter. So to answer your question Zhang, $280 is the most I've spent on one bottle of perfume--but I really, really enjoyed it and have great memories associated with that perfume. I think the 100ml that I bought lasted around two years!

I am strongly against collections (after about a decade of being interested in perfume), but that is just MY personal approach to perfume! I'm very happy for people who enjoy collecting

You can spend as much as you want, or as little as you want. It all depends on your financial circumstances and preferences really. It's all a matter of weighing up needs / wants / luxuries in other categories (such as clothes, shoes, leather goods, etc.) and prioritising what is most important to you.

Ironically, I used to spend a lot more when I was starting to build my wardrobe, and was earning much less. Sometimes, it could go up to around 6-8% of what I was earning on minimum wage a month (not every month, though!). But now that I have solid wardrobe and thankfully am earning more, my spend is negligible (perhaps 1-2% of my after-tax income per year?).
