    Default Macy's Closings

A Macy's a few towns over from me is closing it's doors. Around 20 nationwide.
Not sure if it's a sign of more closings to come or not. Some stores in malls that get little traffic are getting shut down. Shouldn't affect the company as a whole, but who knows.
Anyway, everything appears to be marked down except for fragrances. A sales associate said they won't be marked down at all. Whatever isn't sold will be returned or sent to other Macy's.
Just a heads up to anyone with a Macy's closing nearby. Don't waste your time.

Thanks for the info. I like Macy's. I think all the weak ones near me already closed. The main one was an old acquisition anyway - had a good run as a Macy's, but was always marginal.

Oh, no!!! I love Macy’s. They remodeled the Santa Ana store at Main Place mall and it’s very nice. A SA said they spent money improving the store because they own the building. I hope it’s safe. I’ve been watching a lot of Dead Mall videos lately and the trend is scary.

It's on a corridor being overrun by homeless. All the retail stores are being chased off 3rd Ave one by one.

Ha! Is a white panel van the tadpole phase of an Amazon truck?

Is there still a Bon Marche in downtown Seattle? I think it was part of the Macy's family, wasn't it? Or maybe that was Frederick & Nelson....

Where there were pairs of Macy's stores, I've seen a number of men's department stores being closed and consolidated to one store.

I should think certain stores in large cities should be ok. There are two Macy's in Indianapolis now. One south side and one on the north side. The north side location seems to be busy, especially on the weekends. Don't know much about the southside store.
Granted, this time of year is slower for literally everyone.

It's not all of them, not even by a long shot. I think, in this instance, cutting out the dead weight may actually help them.

Yes, Oviatt, the Main Place Macy’s used to be a Bullock’s when I first moved to Orange County in 1989. The architecture of the store, both inside and out, is really fantastic - quintessential mid century Southern California architecture. The mall opened in 1958 as Bullock’s Fashion Square.

A million years ago, I sold clothes at the Bon Marche and Meier & Frank and Bullocks. Ah, the days of standing around refolding and re-tagging khakis and polos.

The Macy's near me is a fragrance desert, IMO. Their glory days are long gone and their corporate management have turned them into another run of the mill department store.

Bummer to hear for the sales associates, but thanks for the heads up.

As had been said, not all Macy’s stores are closing. Most are still there, and the company is second only to Amazon in e-commerce apparel sales in the US. And many stores are seeing investments, such as my nearest location, Glenbrook Square, which just got a remodel. Heck, Glenbrook itself (a Brookfield Properties mall) is seeing changes. The former Sears has been torn down and Dave & Buster’s (among others) is taking its place, and the former Carson’s is becoming a bowling alley next year. That’s not counting the P.F. Chang’s that was added 18 months ago that does brisk business... try getting a table without a reservation on Sunday at 1 PM.

But down I-69 in Muncie, the Macy’s there is closing, as the mall there is basically in bank possession and has just JCPenney left now. Muncie is a college town. And I witnessed that college students were using e-commerce. 15 years ago.

Also of note: other mall retailers are suffering. A mall mainstay for 40 years, Express has closed tons of stores in dead malls, converted even more underperforming stores to factory outlets, and pushed business to e-commerce. And to think I used to sing the praises of their Reserve and Honor fragrances on here, not long after discovering niche...

Crazy news, retail is in a scary place right now and the world of online is taking over everything. I’ve only bought a few things from there, nice place and nice selection but people are using technology to find better deals and don’t pay retail much anymore.
