Default Does It Bother You When People You Like Mock Cologne In General?

    Greetings,

I was catching up on some episodes of Joe Rogan's podcast which is a great podcast that I recommend, but in the episode clip below - Joe asks his panel this question AND immediately answers it:

"How many guys wear cologne that actually like cologne? Zero". He then goes on to give his position on cologne and the panel have a "fuck no" response to the wearing of cologne.

    https://youtu.be/H4gdLhOp3OE?t=48m51s

I get that cologne/fragrance isn't for everyone and they don't understand our passion for it, but does it bother you when someone you like or respect essentially mocks the very existence of cologne/fragrance and the men who wear it?

I am just curious what people thought.

    Thanks,

    HM

Doesn't personally bother me in the least.

If Joe Rogan is against it you've probably taken the correct position.

His podcast is fantastic and he is great outside of this.

It doesn't bother me. Game of Thrones used to mock perfumes, too. I still watched the show.

    Don’t care.
FYI: I spray all fragrances on clothing, never on skin.

    Here's what I think,

Joe Rogan is an open minded person. He sometimes says things one year, and then after exposure to someone who gives him a different perspective he can change his tune.

I wasn't much of a 'cologne guy' most of my life. Until about 3 years ago something clicked when I went to ebay to try to find a splash Old Spice bottle (because I didn't want the new spray bottles). And I encountered the world of classic wet shaving, then I encountered the world of fragrance as a direct result. And afterwards I realized that in all my life I valued and explored every human sense deeply (taste, touch, sight, sound) but never smell.

That is where I think I can swing Rogan around. The exploration of the sense of smell is best experienced through fragrances, colognes, etc. After talking about my new found passion for the forgotten sense of smell, I would then ask Rogan, "Do you really want to go through your entire life without having deeply explored every part of our shared existence?". I think he would have to stop and ponder that. I pondered it only after I discovered fragrances. I wondered how I went through so much of my life without understanding and making the connection. Fragrance is art and exploration for the olfactory system.

If you're not really deeply into fragrance and you read this.....don't go through your life without having explored your sense of smell. It's something you wouldn't think to regret, but now that you know, a whole new world of sensory experience awaits that you never realized.

I am not saying that we should care what anyone thinks or that I am personally bothered by the clip - I was just curious what people think of anyone they like or respect who thinks this way about cologne.

However I suspect if someone came on here and was mocking cologne - it would hit a nerve with people and there definitely would be an angry back and forth. Sure in this scenario you could say that people would be pissed off simply because someone came into their house to shit on people who love fragrance, but I think to some degree we don't like cologne/fragrance to be mocked on any level just generally speaking.

There's a grain of truth to what he says, but only a grain. Too often with old Joey Rouges it's a case of a rather average intellect with minimal or no critical need to reflect on his prejudices. He makes a solid point about a good portion of men in the western world only wearing cologne to appeal to women, or even with the outright hope they'll get laid. That's not wrong, it's not. But it's the banal sweeping statement that's all a bit...thick.

I think they also pick up on the general lack of cologne use in the western world, though. And no doubt America is even more puritanical than Britain/the Anglo Saxon parts of Europe (France, Italy etc. obviously a bit different). Since smoking stopped being mainstream and publicly acceptable, men's fragrances changed profile totally - from oakmoss powerhouses to salty aquatics - and then men just stopped wearing them altogether, for the most part. Or...you think they did...but the fragcomm collecting and huge increase in market suggests that, no, people are buying and wearing them. Just not as default, and not as universal.

I do think this taps in to a more interesting point - that culture has become visual above all else. I suppose audible as well - but basically dictated by what we perceive on and through our screen devices. Phones rule the world. Fragrance and smell - and touch, and you know, everything that cannot be boiled down and commercialised online - is a relative wasted effort in some ways. A part of life that cannot be frozen in physical, visual recording on a video or photo, and put up online for validation and posterity.

Well to be fair to Joe - it's not like they went into an extensive intelligent discussion about cologne like he does with many topics and guests - it was a quick passing position on cologne, but I agree with your overall point.

It doesn't bother me. In fact, in my experience, they're usually right.

Oversprayers make us all look bad.

I can't even remember how many times I've received compliments followed by statements like "...and I usually hate when guys wear cologne." A week ago, I was wearing 3 sprays of 1725. My date told me how good I smelled and then went off on a tangent about how much she hates cologne because she assumed I was wearing some sort of sandalwood oil (I'd been wearing 1725 for around 8 hours by that point, so it was mostly the base by then). Come to think of it, I had a comment like that about Royal Oud too. I was asked if I was wearing a sandalwood oil. So many popular fragrances these days smell like chemicals. If you're wearing something smooth, don't be surprised if people assume it's not "cologne."

I think there are two main reasons people have a negative connotation regarding "cologne."

    1. So many guys wear too much. Some women wear too much perfume too, but the psychology behind it seems to be different. Women tend to wear fragrance to feel pretty whereas many men (NOT ALL! But many) wear fragrance because they think it'll help them get lucky... and women know that. Again, I'm not saying all guys do that, but so many do.

    2. So much of the popular stuff smells harsh these days. It seems like, with each decade, newer and harsher aroma chemicals are created. So many houses these days are focussed more on performance than they are on how a fragrance smells... and it's hard to blame them since most of the people who wear fragrances seem to only pay attention to how the opening blast smells - especially on the designer side. Even on fragrance forums, when people talk about how scents smell, they're usually talking about the opening or maybe the heart, but they rarely even notice the base, or they notice how a scent smells in the air but they don't notice how the leftover chemical funk leaves their skin smelling nasty.

Anyway... that's my take on it.

One of my friends used to refer to my use of cologne as "a splash of fag water." Still, she was a self admitting trash bag with zero appreciation for anything foreign (other than Alize or champagne) and who enjoyed the aroma of Lynx Africa (Known to most of you as Axe Kilo).

So... no, I wasn't bothered by the comment

He also largely plays for laughs unless he's passionate about a subject like martial arts or hunting. Overall, he seems fairly reasonable, but this was one of those instances where he wasn't going to delve in any deeper because, like most guys, he really doesn't give a shit.

Most people mock cologne guys.. which are guys are that wear so much that they are obviously begging for attention.

Most guys, they wear cologne so that their girlfriend (or boyfriend) knows what they smell like, and that's pretty much it.

While most men certainly don't care about cologne - I grew up thinking that it was a classy thing to wear cologne. My father and grandfather had at least a couple of bottle of something that they would wear on special occasions if not daily. So in some regards I don't really understand the "fuck no" attitude if one is asked if they wear cologne.

I love this scene from Sidewalks Of New York and Dennis Farina's character on cologne.

He's against cologne but does steroids/TRT up the wazoo. I'll stick with frags. His podcast has some good stuff but the man has some idiotically dogmatic positions on many things that often makes listening to him insufferable.

Joe Rogan is a moron. Couldn't care less what he thinks about cologne.

But...to answer your question. I know why I wear cologne: for my own entertainment and pleasure. Fragrances are like art or music for me. They occupy my thoughts and senses, take me on a journey, and just downright amuse me. If I had to estimate it, the time I spend wearing fragrances solely by myself, with no chance of anyone else smelling what I have on, is probably at least 80% of the time I'm wearing fragrance. I look forward to choosing a scent of the day to wear purely for my own enjoyment and amusement. Anything that happens - positively or negatively - as a consequence of that choice is just superfluous. As the pieces of art that they are, fragrances hold intrinsic value for me. That value is neither increased or diminished by other people's opinions, because I don't wear fragrances for other people. Like many others here, I often have a scent of the night as well, that I wear to bed after a shower, purely for my own enjoyment.

I remember someone making a negative comment about New York Intense one time (one of maybe a handful I can remember someone making about a fragrance I've worn in my lifetime). They said it smells like a "French whore." I just laughed and shook my head in disbelief. In my book and many others it's an absolute masterpiece of a fragrance but this person didn't like it for whatever reason. There's no accounting for bad taste. Their opinion didn't influence my love for NY Intense in the slightest.

Having said that, if a significant other really disliked a fragrance I owned, I would not wear it around them.

He has a fundamentally flawed view of how evolution actually works, for starters. He can be a great interviewer except when he doesn't talk over his guests. I think his focus on diet, nutrition and healthy living is marred by his use of steroids, TRT, and GH. Apparently, he's tough on the mats though. Great head and arm chokes, apparently (darce, arm triangle, etc.). I'll give him that. But if you're a fan, you're a fan haha .

On the steroids, TRT and HGH side of things, Joe is in his 50s, and to be honest when I hit that age I would strongly consider seeking out a prescription. From a quality of life point of view once you're of a certain age, there is a reasonable argument for testosterone replacement.

To be fair, I am much less interested in his discussions about MMA, working out, hunting and healthy living than I am about the tons of other subjects he talks about given the guests he may have from week to week, but his diet discussions have been good with various people he has had on talking about keto or intermittent fasting for example. I don't seem to recall though when I have every heard him say that he was all in on steroids specifically, but I will take your word for it.

Rogan has Bill Maher on today and I am really looking forward to digging into that. Should be a great discussion.
