Default Chanel Egoiste vs Bois des Iles

I'm a huge fan of sweet creamy sandalwood and own a bottle of Egoiste. I'm thinking of blind buying a bottle of Bois des Iles but I want to get some feedback from the community. I don't own a lot of fragrances but from the ones I own, Egoiste is top 3 easy. I've read that Bois Des Iles EDP is a classier version of Egoiste. Can someone who has experience with both frags tells me the differences? Appreciate your input.

Egoiste is clearly a son of Bois des Isles. Bois des isles is smoother, more ambery, very soft and cozy. In other words, less woods and more soft materials. But they aren't miles away. If you like Egoiste you'll like Bois des Isles too, but if you happen in a big city, it is not difficult to find at a Chanel counter-so it's hard to recommend blind buying at those prices.

Chanel Égoïste was Jacques Polge's attempt to make a masculine market Bois des Îles, which at the time was considered feminine (but is really quite unisex). Modern Bois des Îles is also a Polge re-creation using available ingredients to capture the accord of the Ernest Beaux original. Bois des Îles is a bit more floral, complex, and sharper than Égoïste, but is quite nice if the price is right.

There's quite a few stores where I live so I might check it out. I've had 0 luck finding a decant. I'm sure ebay has it but couldn't find a reputable seller. Thx.

Thx for the history lesson and for describing the differences between the 2 scents. Would you consider Bois des Iles unisex?

Both are completely unisex, but I find Egoiste to be more distinctive, interesting and simply better smelling.

I think many people would buy Egoiste over Bois des Iles if the latter were just as 'exclusive'.

I think both are great scents. Vintage formulations of both are certainly worth owning if one enjoys sandalwood with oriental. Bois des Iles also includes both aldehydes and a slightly stronger emphasis on florals. My preference is Egoiste of the two but I wouldn't mind wearing Bois des Iles.

Buy Bois des Iles and sell Egoiste.

The magic is in vintage Bois de Iles and/or Bois des Iles in Parfum strength. Both of which are sort of difficult to sample.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Eau de Cologne of Bois de Iles I owned years ago. Went through it very fast. Same for my decant of Egoiste.

As already mentioned, Bois des Iles has a lot of aldehydes up top, which for me push it in the direction of No 5 more than Egoiste. The woods come later. The consensus here seems to be that it's unisex; YMMV but I'm not convinced.

I like Egoiste more than Bois des Iles, but I like both. I think Bois des Iles is one of the best from the Chanel exclusive line. I think the newer, current version (the edp) of Bois des Iles came out pretty well - quite different from the previous edt, which I also liked, and which was extremely distinctive, but I like the new edp more.

I've slowly built up my sampling library, and I have Bois des Iles in vintage edt (1990s, I think), Les Exclsuifs edt, and Les Exclusifs edp. I've had the Les Exclusifs parfum.

I wasn't all that impressed with BDI Exclusif's EdT, but I am very curious about the extrait. Can you describe?

Someone who has a bottle of the parfum would be a better reference, but I think it has more sweet woods in the base. I need to try it again - but sweet, woods, edible smelling, like an idealized pastry, maybe.

I believe I can easily tell the edt from the new edp. The Les Exclusifs edt had and still has huge fans, I know they're around - it is a trippy fragrance - I haven't smelled an effect like it in anything else - a haunting almost wood effect - sort of chemical-y, arguably. I have hardly seen any discussion on the new (2016?) edp. To me it's darker and more like real wood.

    -
The drydowns are similar but the fragrances aren't alternatives.

    Vintage Egoiste
is one of the best masculine fragrances ever made. As warm, elegant, complex, deep, woodsy, herbal with masterfully blended spices things go, it isn't far behind vintage Patou pour Homme.

Vintage Bois des Iles - "The brunette sibling of No. 5" is excellent and smells great on other people. It's also every shade of beige and ultimately bores the shit out of me.

I was able to sample the EDC concentration of Bois des Iles, it's really nice stuff. If you can get a sample of this, it's worth trying. This is from individual Tradition's collection

Having tried both several times, I prefer Bois des Iles over Egoiste. But if you cannot sample Bois des Iles yourself, Egoiste is a safer and cheaper purchase.

Mine, too. And the vintage parfum is like something sent down from the gods.

I own Egoiste here in the UK at the time normal Chanel counters never carried it. I actually got mine cheap in the Perfume Shop £20+ something for the 50mls. I find it sweeter than BDI more oriental in feel. Now my BDI is edp version but I own the parfum bought way in 2003 and it is exquisite the sillage from a few dabs is mega and longevity just keeps going for hours double figures. I did smell the EDT version and like all Beaux, fragrances could take down low flying aircraft with the blast of aldehydes. I decided to buy the edp version when it came out it for me wasn't as loud aldehyde wise compared to the EDT version and seemed actually closer in feel to my parfum version.

BDI is drier with aldehydes Egoiste feels as I said more oriental to me.

Bois des Iles is great - I bought both the EdT and the Parfum several years ago.

The Chanel aldehyde thing doesn't worry me - it disappears pretty quickly and then you're left with a classy sandalwood / gingerbread warmth.

The Parfum is less 'sparkly' but wears 'closer', as with most Extraits. Good stuff.

Personally I find Egoiste a bit too much . . . I respect it as a classic but for me it gets a bit sweet and cloying - just my personal taste.

I forgot to mention that in the vintage Bois des Iles Eau de Cologne I owned, the gingerbread note is much more prominent. I loved that part of it.

Hey guys, so I finally got my 2ml sample of Boi des Iles. To my nose, the first few minutes smelled a bit floral and then it settled down to a much softer sandalwood scent than Egoiste. I also feel it leans more feminine than masculine. I definitely prefer Egoiste because it emanates a creamier sandalwood than BDI which is what I was looking for most.

I like the scent a lot but I'm glad I didn't drop money on a full bottle (yet). Thank you all for your feedback.

    Good idea to sample first.

It took me several wearing for BdI to 'click'. Also BdI smells sooooo good on a woman - I have to agree with you on that.
