Default Why do some people hate fragrance this much?

I was just in the train and there was the most gorgeous (albeit beastly strong) smell of Aventus (not sure it was a clone or the real thing). (London, UK)

Anyway a lady stood there with a cloth covering her mouth and nose ... in utter disgust.

So I’m curious to understand what the mechanism or general reasons are for some people to hate fragrance this much?

I'm guessing strongly that is has more to do with how the scent affects her senses and much less to do with her taste in fragrances and the idea of wearing a scent.

But maybe she just hates Aventus? lol

Perhaps the lady in your scenario considered it an intrusion into her personal space or simply didn’t enjoy the scent that she felt ‘assaulted’... Whatever it was, her overreacting seems equally reprehensible IMO.

Beastly strong smell of anything in a train car is too much. It can, and does, sometimes make one feel like they cannot breath.

This too. I think people either become nose blind to their favorite perfume or they feel it makes them more alpha-whatever to project so much of it. More cases than note it's shite perfume. People tend to follow the crowd when it comes to buying scents and I recall growing up all the boys in my high school would literally spray their shirts wet with Drakkar Noir saying it would accentuate the smell of their body odor and truly believe the ladies loved it. You go and talk to the girls and they hated the perfume but said it smelled better than their boyfriends body odor. Go figure.

Possibly also allergies, disinterest in and/or unpleasant memories but also past experiences with fragrance, maybe a combination of all these and more factors

Sounds like classic British passive aggression.

    Maybe that reaction was genuine.

But in all honesty, it sounds more like she's being an uppity bitch who's a bit deperate to gain the attention of people and let everyone know how she feels about the smell.

If she's over a certain age I'd say this becomes much more likely.

It's possible there was too much applied - you call it beastly - and women do have a better sense of smell, but sometimes it's just a case of reacting for the sake of reacting, a sense of societal obligation to be visibly, yet passively, outraged.

I can go along with this explanation because one has no control over smells in the environment and feeling victimized can provoke a fear/anger reaction. With sight one can choose not to look. Noise pollution can be angering as well because while ears can be covered, all sounds have to be cut off with the unwanted sound. But with smell, it's in the air and you can't stop breathing to stop smelling it. That may be the reason for getting angry but it doesn't give the person any authority to order the smell away. The unfortunate truth for people who don't want to smell perfume in public is that public space is not their personal space and imho the only thing one can do is distance oneself from the disliked smell.

I'm going to go with this. There are times in public that I've been choked out by everything from stale BO, to One Million to Lynx Africa (Axe Kilo to most of you) and I still don't act like an arsehole about it. It's not a big deal to hold your breath and move on.

If the smell was truly that offensive, the lady in question would have moved to the next carriage. Her reaction arose from the need to make a passive aggressive statement, whether to call attention to herself or shame the wearer for his behaviour.

IMHO, i think the lady’s overly dramatic behavior was rude. It’s poor manners to show disgust for another person in such a public way.

There are a number of individuals out there who hate fragrances, thankfully I haven't come across that many.

They have a right to dislike fragrances as much as we have a right to like fragrances.

She enjoyed being outraged and to really show it, or maybe she just really hated it.

Most likely she just used the cloth to hide/wipe away her drool, it was Aventus after all.

    Just kidding, women hate Aventus.

Some people perceive aroma chemicals as being very synthetic and akin to potentially danger concentrations of functional chemicals like acetone, ether, ethyl acetate, other organic solvents, monomers, turpentine, kerosene, etc. It's almost a reflex response in that case to hold one's breath or get away.

I have a female friend, she used to make a fuss when people wore a lot of perfume at the cinema and so on, trying to embarass them. Her main reason was that she thought that such people, especially guys, are dicks.

I've definitely encountered that type - a sort of crybully. But I also knew a gal who just had a really crippling sense of smell - a kind of hyperosmia. She found even people's shampoos and deodorants overwhelming and chemical. Fragrance in general did not smell good to her. But she was also fine about living with it, more or less, and not demanding that others change for her.

It can be fine line between being a bit intolerant and reminding people to be mindful of others.

I went to the cinema not too long ago and a homeless/slightly mental girl sneaked in a while after the movie had begun. Of course she sat right next to me and didn't smell particularly nice but I was too polite to move away and just tried to ignore the smell (and the funny noises). I didn't want to be rude to someone who seemed to struggle already and generally seemed harmless/fragile. If she simply would have been a person that has doused herself with perfume (one that's unpleasant to me at that volume) to let everybody know that she has entered the room, wanting everybody to smell her, no matter what, then I probably would have moved to another seat and commented on it.

Which reminds me of something else that happened recently. A local cinema had homeless people living next to the building and one of their cinemas smells quite strongly of urine now. My girlfriend had warned me as she had been there before. Basically quite a few of my recent cinema visits involved all too human smells. So yeah, perfume isn't the worst thing one can enounter.

I agree with what has been said. You have to have a bit of respect. But on the other hand some people are drama queens. The whole hand over the mouth thing is a way to express their disgust!! They could of moved down the train or just grinned and bared it.

I’m not surprised. I’ve never met a woman that likes Aventus. I’m not sure where this idea came from that it drives women wild.

I understand that your question is of a general interest and doesn't refer to Aventus alone.
According to my experience people normally like perfumes. Not all of them but the most.
If you go out after taken a "perfume-bath" there is a good chance that some people will look at you iin a non friendly way. Especially if you share with them a confined place like the underground. I too would have given such a look. It is very rude not to care about the others and make them smell your perfume knowing that you have to use the public transportation. You can do whatever you like in your car but not in the underground, bus or at work.
It is like an non smoker sitting next to a smoker with a big Havana made cigar in his hands.
Not nice at all. People can get nausea, think you are an a.....e and their negative reactions would be completely understandable to me.
