Default Would You Rather Buy a Better Car Than You Have Now....or....Have more Depth in Your Niche Frags?

    Hey all,

Would you delay buying a new car for 3-4 years and simply maintenance and drive your current car in order to buy more pricey niche frags? Let's find out what the forum thinks about this....

I would, and I have, but passing inspection is getting harder fast up here, especially with the salt.

I bit the bullet recently and went with a new car.

I save money on perfume by buying used bottles on eBay.

New car it gets me to and from work, I’d rather spend less in repairs and just drive a new one daily with no maintenance for a few years. My addiction in this hobby has changed so my priority would be a new car. I’ve not ventured into the niche territory and feel no desire to, because I’m the only one that cares if it cost $400+ no one else does haha. Not knocking those that spend that much or enjoy niche but it isn’t a priority to me I’m happy with what I have and continue to discover without going deep into niche.

But the niche frags I still have on my 'to buy' list are very likely never going to be discounted and if they appear on ebay they would be highly suspect in authenticity. Niches are a problem. They kind of require a sacrifice somewhere if you want them. Especially Clive Christian.

From sampling, I almost always get more interested in vintage stuff, and the market is so variable. I think it could be a torment to be into niche.

I'm lucky enough to live in a city where public transportation negates the need for a car, so bring on the niche!

I would just buy the new car and continue to buy new fragrances to add to my collection. Fortunate that I don't need to make a choice.

My "bucket" is a luxury sedan in good shape and under 100K miles, plus I work from home, so frags are an easy win. But, if I needed a new car, I'd get the car.

I'm an urbanite. I live in the heart of the city. I have multiple modes of mass transit at my doorstep, but so many of the best things are within easy walking distance. Shops, pubs, theaters, restaurants, parks, museums, etc etc etc.

Needless to say, I didn't vote for the car.

Well, I love old cars, so I choose to buy more frags. But taking care of an old car is not cheap either. My 30 years old car is in the shop right now getting fixed, and it will cost me about 1800 Euros just to keep it on the road. So I guess that will limit my fragrance purchase in the near future.

At the moment, niche fragrances. I live in NYC and driving here is a horrendous experience.

I collect some other expensive things as well (Hermes handbags, high fashion RTW and shoes, jewelry, high end makeup) so fragrances don’t get all of my disposable income. I just keep things balanced and but based on what I’m most interested in the moment as long as I can afford it.

I do like to space fragrance purchases out a little though so I can enjoy the new ones and test samples. Right now I’m in heavy buy mode so that means 2-3 per week.

Yeah, I have to put a few maintenance fixes into the car but that wouldn't cost me nearly as much as buying another car. New niche scents should be in my collection in the coming months.

I sold my thrill car. I wasn’t driving it much.

We have a great sedan. Perfect in every way. I don’t enjoy driving much and my wife uses it a lot. I usually use Uber. And I work from home. If I needed a nicer car I’d just get one.
FYI: I spray all fragrances on clothing, never on skin.

That is a fair point. I will not be able to use all my perfumes in my lifetime. But there is always just one more bottle that I need to have.

Both are expenses. A car is one of the worst investment possible for time used to cost ratio.

As for fragrances, it's a want versus need.

Given a choice, with a Swiss style transit system, I'd gladly go for fragrances over a vehicle. I might go late, but the Swiss transit was never a second late...

PS - Obviously I'm living in Canada, where transit isn't as good as Swiss 🤨

Cars are a serious money pit, especially premium cars. Not unusual to lose $20,000 just driving out of the dealership for the first time in a new car.

Well.....my view on a car. Our cars were paid for in cash. We then pay ourselves money in the bank for the next car purchase and once we hit a certain amount of money we put that money in different accounts. We drive those cars until they die, keeping up on all the regular maintenance of course. While some people like luxury or splashy vehicles, we go for family friendly ones - I have a minivan that is almost 8 years old and barely over 65,000 despite daily driving and a 2016 Ford Escape which we all hate, but since it's paid off, we're going to keep driving it. I just hate the Ford because I keep banging my head on the frame each time I get in and out of it.

I don't care for leasing or paying the bank or car dealership interest for purchasing a vehicle. I realize not everyone can do this, but it's how we've remain almost debt free.

That being said - here is what I would say to your question: if you care is still in good shape, continue on with the maintenance to keep it running. A well maintained vehicle can last well over 10+ years. My mom has a Honda that has over 200k miles and still in phenomenal shape because she gets it in the shop regularly. If your car is near the end of the lifespan, consider a vehicle that will last you a long time or at least be in your budget and start saving for a good downpayment or putting money in the bank now.

Personally myself I'm putting of frag purchases because I need to buy my yearly skincare haul (they last the entire year but since I have sensitive skin I can only get certain stuff) and we only have budget for one or the other until summer.

Don't put frags and transportation in the same bucket. If that has to be the case, perhaps niche fragrances aren't quite within one's own reach if the car is a necessity.

I haven't thought about this until now, but if I would have used the money I've spent on fragrances the past two or three years, it would have been a nice down payment on a nice car. The one I have now, though, is still relatively new, inexpensive and gets good gas mileage.

Nah, I've bought a few significantly discounted, authentic Clive Christian bottles from ebay - one, just in the past couple months. I'm talking more than 50% less than retail, and is the older, better formula, even. There are some high-rated, legitimate sellers there not just selling off their personal collection.

I've already taken care all of my essential needs for fragrances so all I'm doing now is securing backups for good measures. The car would be my choice of the two.

Exactly. This is why I put this topic up. I have a 12 1/2 year old car that actually runs great. Drive train is solid and A/C works great. I keep it super clean too. I figure it's got at least 3-4 more years with minor maintenance. So, no worries on the car end. My next car will likely be a used electric-car. They are very affordable (at the moment) and I really think they are the future of cars. And they last a very long time (the battery-pack being it's only limiting factor). I've done quite a bit of research and the bang-for-buck on electric vehicles right now are great, just don't buy a Tesla or some luxury car.

So, all is fine with my transportation. No worries. I have a good window of time to drive my current car and use the disposable income that results for fragrances. I only created this poll to figure out what your feelings were on a car vs fragrances when it comes to enjoyment, not necessity.
