Default Buying a Professional Attire Leather Belt

I've mostly been a discount department store clearance belt purchaser. They tend to last a year or two then get worn and creased around the buckle. The best I ever had was a Calvin Klein I paid about $50 for off Amazon. I noticed it was a thicker leather and lasted several years before beginning to look shabby. Anyone recommend tips for choosing a lasting leather belt for professional attire? Does thickness matter? Are 'leather makers' that measure for fit a good idea? Realistically, I doubt I would pay over $100 for a belt. I don't care about the designer name or brand prestige; just something classic, quality, that lasts.

Thickness matters, yes. But it has to be genuine leather. Otherwise it could be a mile deep and it would still break. Luckily, here in Brazil one can buy high-end leather products, from more humble brands, for extreme bargain prices. I don't care very much about brands!

The grain of the leather will tell you the quality of the leather used. You should never buy a belt that isn’t full grain or top grain. These are the two highest quality types of leather. Genuine leather means it's bonded leather which is scraps of leather glued together and then coated to imitate a grain. Not worth it. Genuine leather breaks down and ages badly. Full grain on the other hand actually improves with age.

Apart form all suggestions already mentioned, perhaps also from the brand (a certain patriotism and/or local bias might also be involved admittedly) - being quite affordable, classically versatile and with international purchase options

The best price to quality ratio I found is from a Spanish brand called Miguel Bellido. Their belts are made in Spain, and most full leather belts are around 30 - 40 Euros. They are probably the best quality I came across in that price range. I even brought back some more belts on my subsequent holidays in Spain.

OMG, when I said "genuine", I only meant that it should be "Real" leather. I never knew of this nomenclature. All my belts are full/top grain. That is what I meant when I said they were high-end. I have belts that I've been using for more than 10 years.

Looks like great info from hednic!

No more often than I wear a belt nowadays, I don't need to worry about wearing one out, so I'll pretty much buy anything that I like the looks of and isn't cheap. I'm hardly ever in formal attire these days.

The only thing I have to remember when buying a belt is to buy it 2 inches bigger than my waist size.

I did not know that; thank you, Hednic.

@Nastka, I will look into Miguel Bellido. Thank you.

He's just helping out. Lol....it's good knowledge to have when belt shopping. And especially furniture shopping.

This! I first learned this while furniture shopping. NEVER buy bonded 'genuine' leather for furniture. Or belts. If you want your furniture to last, buy the real deal.

This is the best piece of advice! I'll add: For professional attire, look for something conservative in black or brown and avoid anything excessively wide (though, I don't care for super slim belts).

There's no doubt that genuine leather belts can last longer than fake one. genuine leather has a smell (some even say that it smells like must) whereas fake leather smell like plastic. Take a good old leather belt for men for instance, smell it and then smell the item that you are willing to purchase: if it smells the same, do not hesitate to buy it, for it is genuine!

Nope. To achieve what you speak of, one will need to buy full grain, not genuine.

You have to cut the belt straight from the cow yourself to do that. Haha

Even better quality if there is still some muscle on the underside of the leather!

I have many belts for different occasions. As Hedic mentioned, full grain leather all the way. When I wear my nicer belts, I feel great...strange what a belt can do

I'm interested as well here. It seems all stores carry is cheap genuine leather.

Try Saks or Neimans... you can never go wrong with them, plus they have great fragrances. Be sure to check their discount sites, sometimes they have great deals

They do. I frequent Saks Off 5th. Not much experience with Neiman's Last Call, though. For the discount sites, I prefer Saks; for the regular stores, I prefer Neiman Marcus.

Oh yes, I agree... Saks is my favorite, followed by Neimans. I check out the discounters a few times a month in hopes of catching something really nice, but it does not happen too often. Duluth has some nice quality items. I have to check them out more.

Me, too. But there are great deals to be found that pop up here and there. I got a $425 pair of Chelsea boots for $100, though that was in store.
