    Default Vintage Antaeus Thread

I thought I would try a vintage Antaeus thread, and kick it off with some pictures.

    Antaeus
    FDB28983-8F42-419D-B4F7-2D36527C154C.jpg

    Antaeus Sport
    B32B3BBA-DAD3-42A3-86B9-1D03FE4787BF.jpg

It works out to about 280 ml of each at the moment.

The sticker-label Antaeus bottle is an interesting one. The bottle came boxed, even in cellophane, I think - in really nice condition, although the sticker is slightly crooked. If any of these bottles is slightly stronger than the others, it's the sticker label.

The Antaeus splash on the left is US made, as are the four Antaeus Sport bottles. The other three Antaeus bottles are French. I bought the splash on the right from Hedonist222, the first of these eight.

The Antaeus spray with the regular, painted label is a tester. That one and the splash from Hedonist222 smell like the same juice.

The four Antaeus Sports smell the same to me.

Testing these side by side to tell them apart becomes too confusing. My nose gets worn out. I get to know them best by giving them full wearings starting in the morning after a shower.

I have boxes for three of these that I could add.

Only one of these eight bottles has a batch code that can be read (09 K on the Parisian splash). It's a gibberish code, I believe.

Great idea for a thread! And timely, in that I opted for vintage today. I'm definitely eager to start learning more about this great fragrance. I've got just two bottles of vintage, a 50ml and a 100ml, both splash bottles pre-barcode.

I also have one of these 19-ml splashes. According to my domestic partner, it smells different from the other bottles - she seems to really like it. She likes all versions of Antaeus.

It has worked out great that she has embraced this one so much - I had my Antaeus collection before I met her.

I love the look of the bottles with "Eau de Toilette" printed above Chanel on the front. I don't know when the change was made to bring "Eau de Toilette" from the back of the bottle, but probably around 1985 when the Sport version was released, I'd wager.

I think your splashes match my US-made splash - New York is mentioned on the boxes and bottles for both, I'm assuming?

I don't really care, but it's fun to speculate: I think these are from between 1981 (the year of release) and around 1985 (when Sport was released).

The after shave doesn't look so vintage - but I imagine it rocks as an after shave.

I find the 19ml a little less “fresh” than the larger bottle, which may just mean it wasn’t stored as well. But, still perfectly wearable.

Given the breadth of my still-growing collection, I’m not sure I need any more Antaeus than I have, but a vintage spray at the right price would tempt me.

Checking the levels on my bottles, I've been using the splashes more.

So what you’re saying is, you want me to take one of the sprays off your hands.

Second-hand Antaeus shoppers may want to ask sellers to check the liquid level with a flashlight. This one is at about 80 ml.

I'm comfortable having more than I need in this case. I'm not sure why - I think I like sprays more - but in practice, given both options, I don't really seem to have a preference. Hopefully bottles will continue to trickle out on the second-hand market. There's always Russia, for the ambitious and patient. My sticker label came from Russia. I've done around five or six orders from Russia, I think. Everything has made it and been legit, but the fastest shipment took about three weeks.

New York is indeed written on the back of the bottles and boxes for both. And the price tag for the 100ml is still on the box: $23.50 from Gimbels.

And the after shave is definitely current. I was too lazy to get up and take a picture of both vintage bottles together. I bought it at the Chanel store about a month ago. An effective a/s, but not much scent.

I think my modus operandi (mo) for picking bottles was just to go for ones that looked old. Here are the two Antaeus bottles that came with boxes.

There are no bar codes, no batch codes - not much of anything. There are paper inserts advertising other Antaeus products (hair care, skin care, etc).

That fits the number-number-letter scheme that was used in the early '80s. I don't think anyone has come up with a key, so specific dates are a mystery. When I see a code like that, I just think "late '70s / early '80s". I've never seen a code of that sort on packaging that otherwise suggests a production date outside that time frame. Moreover, I've never seen one on a US-made item.

These codes were applied with an indent stamp on the box, or printed on the cellophane. On bottles, the code always appears on a sticker.
    (The usual caveats apply.)

Anything following that coding system is probably amazing. That was a great time for Chanel.

It if's nitromusks you're after, I think you have to go back a bit further. That's not an issue with Antaeus, though.

I only own one large spray bottle which I bought in the early 80s and just love it. Never paid any attention to the packaging, or what appeared on the bottle and didn't keep the box.

A friend of mine bought a 50 ml./1.7 oz splash bottle with the sticker/label on the front and it resulted in a fake bottle with fake perfume.
    Is yours a legit one?

My mini has a sticker on the front, and it’s genuine. So, it’s not just a thing counterfeiters do.

Mine seems legit. The 19-ml bottles also have sticker labels, as PStoller noted. I read a theory that all sticker label bottles are fake, but that the counterfeiters worked so hard on the fake juice, that sometimes it came out even better than real Chanel. I found that reasoning remarkable enough to mention periodically since.

Of my bottles, the sticker label one is probably the best, even considering the crooked sticker. If it had the painted label like the bottle next to it, it would be the perfect bottle. It smells so strong and fresh, like a mint condition first edition.

The bottles with "Paris" in paint smell slightly cleaner / not as old / not as animalic / not as intense - extremely polite and sophisticated. The worn-looking US splash smells a little different, I think from aging. It was a partial when I bought it, so it's had more exposure to air. I already had the other three, but this one was listed for around $80, I think it was.

I think I have a lifetime supply. I have 20 others I like just as well, and love to give them equal time (e.g., Moschino Pour Homme, Jules). Plus, I'm sampling half the time.

Here are the notes in the Basenotes directory:

Clary sage, Myrtle, Bergamot, Lemon, Lime, Coriander, Cedar
Orris, Thyme, Basil, Rose, Jasmine, Patchouli, Sandalwood
Labdanum, Olibanum, Beeswax absolute, Leather, Musk, Castoreum, Oakmoss

Here are Chanel's notes for Antaeus, from a 2007 pamphlet:

    Myrtle, Alpine Lavender
    Clary Sage
    Cistus Labdanum, Indonesian Patchouli

Chanel described it as a "Leather-Aromatic" with "Spicy herbal notes with leathery and woody base notes."

Currently on their website, Chanel has changed the notes list slightly by not including "myrtle" and changed the description to "an aromatic, leather-accented scent." It sounds like it's gotten less leathery:

"A striking alchemy of fresh, aromatic Lavender and a rare and complex Leather accord, heightened with wood and spices. Its spirited, exotic trail is enriched with notes of Cistus Labdanum, Clary Sage and Indonesian Patchouli."

They really do capitalize lavender and leather, etc.

    Great thread!

Hereís my 50ml splash. Itís now at about 50%, and at some point Iíll have to bite the bullet and get a larger backup. This came without a box and I donít know the exact date, but I think itís 1st Edition, and itís spectacular.

I used to have a mini. Used it up and donít remember the bottle details.

    I love Antaeus.

The rubber gasket in the top of the cap is still keeping a tight seal, I trust. 25 ml is a good, long supply for such a potent fragrance.

Yes, the interior "layer" of the cap with the threads looks and feels solid, so I have no concerns.

And true, I usually use very light dabs and that's plenty...I might just need to be more of a Scrooge with samples. That's where most of it has gone, I think!

I believe 631007 may have been a "catalog number" in the US for a 50-ml Antaeus Splash in the 80s.

I haven't thought about it much, but I think any Antaeus edt splash might be vintage.
