Default Where to go after Dior Homme

    Hi all!

I've been wearing fragrances for 5+ years now but have mostly stuck to the generic, well-known players (Aqua Di Gio, Creed Aventus, etc.) or whatever a relative bought me for the holidays.

Well, recently I decided to dive deeper into the perfume world and started out with a bunch of decants recommended by this article

I think it gave me a good high-level overview of the different scent families in the wild, but the frag I kept coming back to was Dior Homme. I loved how complex it smelled and how throughout the day I would keep noticing new layers and notes I didn't before. I quickly went through the decant and purchased a full bottle.

However, once I had the bottle and started to wear it all day I was somewhat disappointed.. I think a combination of nose blindness and low performance basically made the scent invisible after a week of daily wear. I just wasn't noticing it the same way I used to, and I don't think others were either. I've tried DHI but to be honest I think it lacks the subtlety of DH, and is just more in-your-face all at once. I really love how DH starts with a lighter, iris scent and moves to vetiver/leather as the day goes on.

So, I'm wondering if anyone could point me to some other scents to try that are similar-to DH? Also open to broader suggestions, since I'm still new I could always use some direction in terms of what accords or base notes I may like!

Dior Homme is unique. You just need to mix it up with others or else you will become anosmic to it (sounds as though this has happened already)

I can never wear the same fragrance everyday twice a week tops otherwise it gets boring and nose blindness for sure happens. Dior Homme is not weak and does perform, you just get used to it after repeated wears and block it out. Rotate your other fragrances regularly and give space between wearing Dior Homme and you will see it’s just fine.

As others were saying, stick to Dior Homme but perhaps get 1-2 more perfumes and rotate between them.

    Hi and welcome!

If you want to explore the iris aspect more I recommend trying Iris Silver Mist from Serge Lutens.
For more sweet leather try Tom of Finland from Etat Libre d´Orage.

    This is a good suggestion.

As a very affordable, inexpensive alternative that still different enough not be considered a clone/carbon copy of DH, also adding and recommending Zara 9.0

? He said he doesn't like that one as much.

OP, as you like the complexity and construction of Dior Homme Im gonna recomend the masculine tree from Guerlain, specifically Habit Rouge. Guerlain makes good complex well made fragrances that ooze care of creation. And yea, you should probably rotate.

    Still another good suggestion.

Both of these are excellent suggestions another place to explore with iris.

Thanks for all the suggestions! It definitely seems like I need a few more fragrances in my daily rotation to avoid nose-blindness.

^ I think this is a good summation of why I like DH (I just couldn't think of the words myself )

Will definitely be marking down these suggestions and either order some decant samples or hit some of the fragrance stores in the area I've been meaning to check out (once this quarantine/isolation business is over of course)

The epitome of iris and woods in a vein somewhat similar to DH would be Christian Dior’s Bois D’Argent. Both beautiful!

I'm not 100%, but I think there's a Valentino very similar to Prada L'Homme. I forgot which one.

You mean Valentino Uomo Intense? It's probably more similar to Dior Homme Intense than to Prada L'homme I would say.

That's likely the one. I'm just not familiar with the Valentino line.

Valentino Uomo and Uomo Intense. You need to explore Guerlain fragrances like Derby, Vol de Nuit, Jicky, Mouchoir de Monsieur, Habit Rouge, L'Heure Bleue, Heritage, Sous Le Vent...

BOSS, the Scent Parfum Edition might be worth getting as well. It fades quickly but it's inexpensive and has a soft iris note.
