Default How Much Is Too Much?

I am getting back into fragrances and I was reminded this weekend by a real estate agent that I generally don't like smelling fragrances on other men...I enjoy wearing fragrances but I wonder if I am putting other people off. I wear fragrances for myself to enjoy and I wonder if there is a good to wear them without much projection.

I have a couple of fragrances in my cart and I want to pull the trigger but I am hesitating that wearing them could be off-putting.

I think if you stick to the lighter/Fresh fragrances, you shouldn't have a problem... It's once you start hitting the more animalic ones, ones that with Oud etc then it might be a problem.. Doesn't mean you shouldn't get more spicier ones, or the Oud ones, just maybe tone it down when meeting people for business etc

Vetiver fragrances are nice and not off putting they give off a fresh vibe. Guerlain Vetiver, Guerlain Homme L’Eau Boisee, Guerlain Homme Eau De Parfum, Tom Ford Grey Vetiver EDP are good ones. Chanel Bleu De Chanel, Chanel Allure Homme, Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche EDP, Chanel Allure Homme Sport, Chanel Platinum Egoiste, Chanel Egoiste, Prada L’Homme these are usually well accepted by the public and mass pleasing so they could work too.

IMO with Chanel, Guerlain you can’t go wrong they offer quality fragrances blended well and won’t come off as too much or gross to others. Application is key too 2-3 sprays would be fine for most situations, as you wear them you will feel out the performance of them. Welcome back to the hobby a lot of great fragrances await to be explored and worn!

Why? Is it all fragrances on all men? It might be that you’re picking up certain notes especially certain aromachemicals which can be overdone in many cheapie/generic fragrances. If you’re apprehensive that other people are put off by you wearing fragrances don’t be unless you go overboard with spraying.

Wear what you enjoy. If it seems to offend others, you may want to use less sprays.

As I always say here at BN: For me, there is never "too much" or "too strong". I am a shameless oversprayer, my collection is focused on "powerful" classics and I literally bathe in my perfumes.

Go with a lighter, fresh style cologne. Or go with something you like, regardless of how powerful it is and just go easy on the sprays.

Just don't go crazy on the number of sprays.

I usually stick with one spray unless it is on the weaker side then I might go for two.

I find that when I meet people in a business or professional setting that are wearing a strong fragrance that I find them less trustworthy...maybe I am just remembering the bad ones...not sure.

Apart from all the good recommendations already posted, also adding especially as office and workplace appropriate testing/retesting choices that might not be too much even if at least slightly over spraying/applying, mainly (but not limited to) and in no particular order:

Yardley Citrus&Wood, Best of Chevignon, Guerlain l'Homme Ideal Cologne, Eau de Rochas, Verdon by l'Occitane, Knize Forest, Voyage d'Hermes Parfum, Caron pour un Homme, Lalique Encre Noire Sport, YSL pour Homme and/or Jazz/Live Jazz

I think it’s pretty safe to say you’ve just developed some sense memory aversions to individuals you’ve encountered.

It’s like the old generalisation that men with beards are untrustworthy or have something to hide (or are automatically hippies).

All the advice here is good and my thoughts are if you have concerns, go for something with predominant citrus. Generally it’s your safest choice with the widest number of people.

Wear a conservative amount and you'll be fine. Most of us here wear fragrances for our own enjoyment anyways.

I have to agree that it may just be overspraying on certain fragrances. I go light handed on heavier orientals and gourmands for example but may spray more on 'fresh' style perfumes instead.

Lol now it's been mentioned, I'm not sure I enjoy smelling off others. Or a sneaking suspicion (what is being hidden in the cloud of over application, deficient personal hygiene or even just a deficient personality!!) Maybe it's not the 'thing' here in the stiff lipped UK!!??
Now on second thoughts, it's often others who've oversprayed that make me screw up my face.

As per,top advice, go easy and it's all groovay;-)

Yes go easy, especially if you’ve experienced being called out, or you’re averse to people who smell “loud”. Overspraying is just obnoxious and insensitive IMO, I generally stay away from people who wear fragrance clouds, and since they don’t care about their “cloud”, I don’t mind sharing a wrinkled-nose face around them either.

Wear what you like and don't overspray.

If you don't buy Leather Oud, Kouros, Oud Ispahan, Interlude and Sauvage you'll be good.

Don't worry that much about what other people think of your fragrances - unless you wear a lot or overspray. Just be mindful of how much you put on. I find that 2-4 sprays is the perfect amount for any fragrance.

You could also switch up where you spray. I have some fragrances, that I prefer to wear on my wrist rather than my neck, it really depends on the fragrance.

On the topic of fresher fragrances being "safe": I'm really not sure about that. I personally find some notes that are fresh (like menthol) very annoying at times. In the end these things are just very personal and what's fine for me may be too much for you.

I typically wear for me, so sprays are what I tolerate (generally). I'll make some exceptions in that if I'm around a large number of others in work or similar I would sometimes dial back just to be courteous (though I've never received a complaint in that regard).
Otherwise, just experiment. If you wear 'too much' one day (subjective), then you know to wear less the following. You'll get a real fee/appreciation for what you can push the sprays on and what you cannot.
