Glad I could put my hands on a large decant of that one. Simply stunning. My favourite "sunny" vetiver, together with TdC Sel de Vetiver.

I just happened to come across a bottle of Givenchy Insense on eBay this afternoon and pulled the trigger blind. Not a grail, wasn't even searching it out but there it was. Vintage 100ml about 60%. Excited to see if the hype is real, I've heard a lot about it

It's a good one, and also an odd one. I haven't pulled the trigger yet myself, but it's on my not-so-short list.

I had a sample in 1989 and it was so delicious. One particular note stroke me to this day, I clearly detected a smell of freshly cut cucumber. I don't even recollect the petrol note or anything like it in that sample.

I can tell you that Joint, Furyo, Gucci Nobile, Ungaro II, Horizon by Laroche, Davidoff Relax, are all very good fragrances but I wouldn't pay anything over $50 each for them, except maybe Nobile, which is the nicest of the lot. If you like nag champa incense you already know what Joint and Furyo smell like. Not much else to those two. Ungaro II is like a more nuanced and smoky version of Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur. Only vintage Laroche I tried is Horizon. Davidoff Relax is just a creamy semisweet thing with a darker note, probably the most Joop!-like Davidoff I've ever encountered. Disgustingly overpriced on eBay.

I remember my dad having the original grey and brown bottle, and thinking it smelled so much better than the black and silver bottle that came after it. In hindsight, it probably just didn't mix well with my body chemistry. The new juice smells pretty good for what it is, a dry oriental, and that genre is not my style. But just to have the original bottle would bring back some memories.

    Eternity for Men
This is probably one of my favorite fragrances ever. A lot of nostalgia in it too. The AdG/Aventus/Sauvage of its day. The current stuff smells like how I remember it. But everyone swears that the original juice was so much better. I'd love to get an intact bottle of vintage just to see if it's that much better.

Original Polo by Ralph Lauren in a fresh new 6.7oz. bottle in all it's beautiful glory! With a continuous supply when that one ran out. This was my signature scent for twenty years. I don't mind the new version when it hits the dry down it's nice, but I much prefer the original Warner Polo.
    Drakkar Noir Vintage
Racquets formula by Penhaligons would be nice as well.
Hai Karate vintage bottle brand new. This was the first fragrance/after shave I remember smelling in the late 1960's at the drug store. I'd want a bottle just for old time sake.

I am fortunate to own a brown 100ml vtg splash edt bottle and it is indeed way better than current formulation. Deeper, thicker, heavier and lasting 10 hrs easily!
The cocos, oakmoss, sandalwood, pepper, lavender, nutmeg and amber are blended to perfection but still you can pick all of them out! Classy stuff!
Newer stuff has an ok smell but has no oakmoss, smells very linear, more synthetic and performs weak, especially on the projection part.

Maybe that's what it was. The new stuff to my nose: very smokey or dry in the dry down, and yes, it smelled kind of "flat" in a way. I remember the old stuff just having this this depth that you describe. This might explain the high prices for vintage.

Guy La Roche Horizon was mentioned. It's been discontinued so does that mean everything that's available on the grey market is vintage? Because it still seems widely available at cheap prices. I had a chance to get a 2.5 oz bottle for about $15. I didn't like it but it was an interesting scent for sure.

I have tried a lot of these vintage fragrances and own a bunch, gave some away and sold even more for not a lot of dosh.

Problem for me is that unless I have a memory connected to these scents, there is no joy other than the olfactory trip, which many fragrances also offer today.

Many of the mentioned are very available on eBay and not at prices so bad you couldn't afford - many new Tom Fords and the likes of Baccarat Rouge 540 are priced unnecessarily high in comparison to the vintage gems.

I have hung on to vintage original Kouros at both of my residences, and probably will never be without one. I have sold a ton of these as well.

eBay is my go to for sourcing vintages, though I have been fortunate to also find brick and mortar fragrance shops that have no clue what they have. I was once in Sicilia where I found a store close to my hotel in Trapani. After a quick scan of the items, I came on Basenotes to announce what I'd found and for folks to place orders. I shipped quite a few to the lucky ones who responded. http://www.basenotes.net/threads/220...ind?highlight=

To acquire vintages, you simply have to have a strategy. I recently acquired the Bugatti that has been mentioned a few times here, for pennies.

Anyhoo, great thread, eBayer sellers are not all as in the know as most think
    Waiting for Hednic's 8th star
