Friend & family, yes. Strangers? Not usually. Not unless they smell so amazing it’d be ungrateful of me not to acknowledge it with a sincere compliment for the sheer pleasure it’s giving me.

Voted for 3, simply due to not meeting very frequently people wearing both spectacular fragrances, outstanding enough to catch the attention and be complimented on the spot and even less having such a degree of familiarity to compliment them.

However if it happens that the ones known well enough to compliment them do wear a worth complimenting, why not?

I compliment folks on their fragrance once in a while.

If it's someone I know, no problem. If it's a total stranger, sure if he or she seems cool - so usually not.

Of course I'll compliment people and ask what they're wearing. Strangers, friends doesn't matter. If the fragrance smells good compliment and ask what it is, if it smells awful, lie and tell them it smells good. If strangers think your weird, who cares. Never had anyone get offended.

For me, it goes along with my interest in fragrance. I like to talk about it. If I smell something on someone, it seems only natural as someone who enjoys fragrance to want to have conversations about it with anyone who engages in my conversation.

    Yes.

A hundred years ago when I was young and I worked, I had my female co-workers come up to me all the time and ask me what I was wearing because they loved it and they would almost unerringly pick the scent that was just perfect for their own style. I had a lot of minis, and backups of minis, so when they asked about something in particular like that, I would just bring in a little bottle of it to give them the next day. It was fun.

With frriends and family or the the person I am dating of course.

For strange women, depends on how approachable that person is and their "vibe" to me.

I never compliment strange men, but if they are wearing something I haven't semlled (which has not happened yet) or something too exotic for my curious nose, then I will compliment and also ask them about their fragrance.

In my life I have complimented many people, including ones I know and strangers, on their fragrance and its usually appreciated. I feel it can be a generous gift to give someone a genuine compliment - you may go on with your day and never think of it again but they will remember it long after.

    Agreed.

Oftentimes without them saying you can tell it means the world to them. In fact, one might safely assume that feeling will remain with the person, friend or stranger.

People enjoy the reward of having any of their senses recognized in an agreeable manner, whether it’s their choice of music, the quality of their food, the way they style themselves, etc. Recognition of the senses speaks to what makes us human and embodies the essential connection with others. I know that I, myself, appreciate it in spades. And on that note I’ve yet to create a faux pas by complementing one’s choice of fragrance . . . at least, not as far as I’m aware.

    What's "shocking" about that?

I don't compliment others on the fragrances they wear. If I even notice someone wearing a fragrance, it's not even anything special 90% of the time.

I also don't look for compliments on mine. I know the fragrances I wear are good. That's why I wear them. Duh.

Yes EXACTLY, sometimes you can see the look of welcome surprise and the subtle happiness they will carry with them for at least the rest of the day.

It depends on the person and the situation. The wearer usually decides with their body language and facial expressions, if they are strangers to you. I usually don’t comment to be on the safe side unless they are family , friends or coworkers .

That sounds a bit sad. Nobody's day should depend on validation from strangers that much.

I am going to say this, women will compliment each other quite easily. Any compliments I have been given are from other women friends and strangers. I do compliment friendly with oh that is lovely and they tell me what it is.

Its the same thing when someone lets you out in traffic, maybe just a recognition of a kind gesture than validation.

I would if I ever smelled scent on someone. Where I live I rarely encounter anyone wearing something.

Maybe that's why I receive so many compliments. No one else is wearing anything.

Seriously. Carrying around happiness from a perfume compliment for "at least the rest of the day"? Pathetic. Sounds like that person needs some self esteem.
